NFL rights are divided among broadcasters and products, so no single app carries every matchup everywhere. The correct fix depends on the game, date, country, app, device, subscription and whether you are at home or traveling.
Start by identifying the exact matchup and kickoff, then determine whether it is local, out-of-market, nationally televised, postseason or an international event. Match that category to the service that owns the rights before changing network settings or reinstalling the app.

What the location error actually means
Streaming services use your current location to apply NFL broadcast rights. A game may be available in one market but blocked in another, even when the same app works for a different matchup. The message can also appear when the app, plan or device is not eligible for the game, or when the service has an outdated location reading.

“Local” means the game is being shown on television in the market where you are watching. “Out-of-market” means the game is available outside the designated broadcast region for your location. NFL Support explains the distinction in its regular-season blackout policy.

Because the title of the error does not identify the cause, avoid assuming that your internet provider, phone GPS or subscription is at fault. First classify the game and service.
How NFL games are distributed
NFL games follow different distribution routes. The current NFL viewing guide lists these typical destinations, although schedules and terms can change by season:

The NFL’s official viewing guide recommends checking the current schedule and local listings. These destinations are not interchangeable: a subscription that shows one network does not automatically unlock a game assigned to another.

Local Sunday afternoon games
A local Sunday afternoon game is normally carried by the CBS or FOX affiliate serving your current market. A Sunday Ticket subscription is not intended to replace that local broadcast. If the game is local, open the relevant network’s local stream or use a television package that includes the affiliate.
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are the matchups not carried on your local CBS or FOX channels. YouTube describes NFL Sunday Ticket as a product for these regular-season Sunday afternoon games. It does not include local games, nationally televised games such as Sunday Night Football or Monday Night Football, or postseason games. National broadcasts and postseason games
Nationally televised games follow their named network or event platform. Sunday Ticket is not a pass for Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football or playoff games. A location message on Sunday Ticket for one of those events may simply indicate that the product is not designed to carry it.
What each major option can and cannot show
NFL+
NFL+ offers live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on phones or tablets. It also offers live out-of-market preseason games on supported devices, live audio for every game, and Premium replay and RedZone features according to the current NFL+ availability page.

NFL Support directs viewers to NFL Sunday Ticket for those games. Therefore, an NFL+ subscriber can be correctly signed in and still receive an unavailable message for an out-of-market Sunday afternoon matchup.
YouTube TV and NFL Sunday Ticket
YouTube TV can carry local and national games when the required channels are included in your market. Its Sunday Ticket product covers regular-season Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games that are not on local channels. It excludes local games, national broadcasts and postseason games.
YouTube determines eligibility from your current viewing area. Its help page says location permissions must be enabled and that availability can change when you travel or move. Review YouTube’s location and NFL Sunday Ticket guidance if the service shows the wrong market.

Local network streaming
A local network stream can be the right answer for a particular CBS, FOX or NBC game, but it is not a general out-of-market solution. The YouTube TV guide currently points viewers to Paramount+ for local CBS games, FOX One for local FOX games, and Peacock for Sunday Night Football and local NBC games. Availability depends on the actual game, your market and the provider’s current terms.
International NFL Game Pass
Outside the United States, the NFL directs viewers to NFL Game Pass International through DAZN. NFL+ is listed as available in the United States only. Country-specific rights can differ, so confirm the service and matchup coverage for the country where you are physically watching.
Device restrictions can trigger an otherwise confusing message
NFL+ has a live-device restriction that is easy to overlook. NFL Support states: “Live local and primetime regular season and postseason games are only accessible on NFL+ via a phone or tablet.” If you are trying to watch one of those live games through the NFL app on a smart television, streaming box or game console, the block may be a device rule rather than a geographic blackout.
NFL Support also notes that participating TV-provider credentials may enable games included in your paid television subscription. That is different from an NFL+ entitlement. If a connected-TV app rejects the stream, sign in through the provider that actually carries the game, or move the live NFL+ session to a supported phone or tablet.
Travel and incorrect location readings
YouTube says games are determined by the current viewing area. A move, hotel stay, mobile hotspot or travel connection can therefore change which games appear. The app may also require location permission from the operating system or browser.

Check the current viewing area shown in your account and confirm that YouTube TV has permission to use location. On a phone or tablet, review the app’s location permission in the operating system settings. On a browser, allow location access when prompted and make sure the browser is not using a stale permission decision.
Do not assume that changing a Wi-Fi network, using a VPN or switching devices will override broadcast rights. The service is required to enforce the rights attached to your actual market, and an altered network route can create an additional location mismatch instead of solving the original problem.

- Write down the exact game. Record both teams, the date, kickoff time and whether it is a preseason, regular-season or postseason matchup.
- Check the official listing. Use the NFL’s current Ways to Watch and viewing guide, local listings or its ZIP-code availability route to identify the assigned network and market.
- Classify the broadcast. Mark the game as local Sunday afternoon, out-of-market Sunday afternoon, nationally televised, postseason, international or an exclusive event.
- Compare the classification with your plan. NFL+ does not provide live out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games. Sunday Ticket does not include local, national or postseason games. A plan mismatch is not fixed by reinstalling the app.
- Check the device. For a live NFL+ local or primetime game, use a phone or tablet. For a connected television, use the TV provider credentials that include the game, if applicable.
- Verify location permissions. In YouTube TV, check the current viewing area and allow location access. Repeat this after moving or traveling.
- Sign out and refresh the entitlement. Close the app, sign back in to the account that owns the subscription and update the app if an update is available. This refreshes account data but cannot add rights your plan does not have.
- Escalate with complete details. If the game should be eligible, contact the relevant service and provide the app name, country, city or ZIP code, device, subscription, exact error text, game and whether you are traveling. There is no single universal fix documented for every location error.
Choose the option that matches your game

Common situations and the right interpretation
“I pay for NFL+, but the Sunday afternoon game is blocked.”
Check whether the matchup is out-of-market. If it is a regular-season Sunday afternoon game outside your local CBS or FOX market, NFL+ does not stream it live. Sunday Ticket is the product identified by NFL Support for that category.
“Sunday Ticket shows an unavailable local game.”
That is expected when the game is carried by your local CBS or FOX station. Use the local channel or a service that includes it; Sunday Ticket is for Sunday afternoon games not shown locally.

“The app worked at home but not while traveling.”
Travel can change the current viewing area and therefore the games you are entitled to see. Recheck location permissions and the displayed viewing area. The new market’s broadcast rules apply while you are there.
“The game works on my phone but not my television.”
For NFL+, that difference can be intentional because live local and primetime games are mobile limited. Use the phone or tablet for the NFL+ stream, or authenticate through a participating television provider whose package includes the broadcast.
“I am outside the United States.”
NFL+ is a U.S. service. Follow the NFL’s international guidance for NFL Game Pass through DAZN and verify the country-specific schedule before subscribing or troubleshooting a U.S. app.
What information support will need
A useful support request is specific enough to distinguish rights enforcement from a bad location reading. Include:

- Your country and current city or ZIP code.
- The app or website, subscription name and account used.
- Device model and operating system, such as phone, tablet, smart TV or browser.
- The complete error wording and when it appears.
- Whether you are at your normal home location, traveling, using a hotspot or recently moved.
- Whether another game or another device works with the same account.
These details let the provider check the correct market and entitlement instead of offering generic network-reset steps.
Bottom line
An NFL location error is usually a rights, plan, device or location-permission issue—not proof that the app is broken. Identify the game’s broadcast category first, then use the service assigned to that category. NFL+ is not live out-of-market Sunday afternoon coverage; Sunday Ticket is not local, national or postseason coverage; and international viewers follow a separate service path. If the game is eligible after those checks, verify the current viewing area and permissions, then contact support with the full game, account, device and location details.
