A freeze on only some iPads does not, by itself, identify the cause—or prove the hardware is defective. An app may stop updating because its main thread is busy or waiting, or it may exit after a watchdog or memory-related termination. To find out what happened, reproduce the same steps on an affected device, inspect an Instruments trace and any crash report, then compare the result with field data.
What does “hung” mean in an iPad app?
Apple describes an app hang as a period when its main thread is unavailable to respond to an event that requires a screen update. The thread may be occupied doing work, or blocked while waiting for a resource or system call. Either can make the interface appear frozen even though the underlying failure is different. Apple’s app-responsiveness guidance explains the distinction.

Possible causes to investigate include synchronous network requests, processing a large file or model, a synchronous operation that triggers migration of a large Core Data store, or Vision analysis on the main thread. These are examples of potential blockers, not evidence that any one of them caused a particular app’s freeze. Apple discusses these cases in its guidance on watchdog terminations.
Is a freeze the same as a crash or system termination?
No. A user may describe all three as “the app froze,” but the distinctions matter when diagnosing the problem. A hang is a period of unresponsiveness. A crash or system termination means the app has stopped running; the termination reason and report can point to a different failure path.

- Temporary hang: The app stops responding for a time and may recover. A trace can show whether the main thread was doing work or waiting.
- Watchdog termination: The system may end an app that takes too long to launch or respond. Apple identifies
0x8badf00das the watchdog termination code in a crash report. - Memory-related termination: Memory-limit and memory-pressure terminations are distinct from watchdog termination and call for a different investigation.
Apple recommends checking termination data through Xcode Organizer or MetricKit; its termination guidance describes these categories. If the app exits, preserve the crash report and inspect its termination reason rather than relying only on what the screen looked like.
How do you diagnose an app hang on an affected iPad?
- Record the exact symptom. Note the app build, iPad model, iPadOS version, steps, time until the problem appears, and whether touch or scrolling stops responding. Record whether the app resumes, exits, or remains unresponsive. Keep these outcomes distinct in your notes.
- Reproduce the issue while profiling. Connect the affected iPad to a Mac and record the app in Instruments while repeating the same steps. Apple also describes importing tailspin files produced by on-device hang detection into Instruments. Start with the workflow in Improving app responsiveness.
- Inspect the main-thread trace. Use an appropriate Instruments template, such as Time Profiler, CPU Profiler, or Hitches, and examine the Hangs instrument. Look at the call path in the trace to determine whether the main thread is busy or blocked; a description such as “the app stopped responding” cannot establish which.
- Check any exit report. If the app closed, inspect the crash report’s termination reason and stack. A watchdog code supports investigating a responsiveness timeout; a memory-related reason points to a different line of inquiry.
- Compare the affected and unaffected cases. Check device model, OS version, app build and configuration, account or persisted data, input size, network conditions, and exact steps. Change one condition at a time where practical so the comparison can narrow the trigger.
What can Instruments tell you?
A busy-main-thread trace indicates that work on the main thread is delaying screen updates. Apple’s Instruments tutorials describe investigating this kind of hang and reducing or moving work that does not need to run on the main thread. A blocked trace instead directs attention to the operation or resource the thread is waiting on. Follow the recorded call path, then repeat the same scenario after a change to see whether the trace changes.

The Hangs instrument reports periods of main-thread unresponsiveness above its configured threshold; a reported potential hang still needs interpretation in context, including whether a user would have expected to interact at that moment. Apple documents a 250 ms default threshold in the Time Profiler template for the Hangs instrument. That is a tool setting, not a universal definition of “hung forever” or a guarantee that every user will perceive a pause the same way. See Understanding synchronous and asynchronous hangs.
How can you check whether the problem affects released builds?
A local reproduction may not capture a problem that occurs only with particular data, conditions, or devices in the field. Xcode Organizer and MetricKit offer ways to examine responsiveness and termination information from released builds. MetricKit documents hang-time metrics and hang diagnostics that can include a call stack and hang duration. Availability and delivery depend on the operating-system version and the APIs used, so verify those details for the deployment target rather than assuming every device supplies the same records. Does “some iPads” prove a device defect?
No. A device-specific pattern is useful because it narrows the conditions to compare, but it does not prove that the hardware caused the hang. Model capability, OS release, app build, stored state, input size, and resource availability can all differ between affected and unaffected cases. The documentation describes general hang mechanisms and diagnostic methods; it does not identify a faulty iPad model, a particular iPadOS bug, or the cause of the unnamed app’s behavior.
Likewise, saying the problem happened “nowhere else” requires a defined observation period and enough information about which devices and sessions were observed. Without that denominator and a trace, crash report, or documented investigation for the app, the root cause remains unknown.
