1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst, compare the Reel’s sound in Instagram with the saved video. If the Reel is silent in Instagram too, the download cannot provide audio that was not playing there. If it has sound in Instagram but the file does not, check the player and audio output, then try Instagram’s own download option if available. A silent file alone does not reveal whether the cause is the download, audio availability, or playback.
Start by checking where the sound disappears
- Play the same Reel in Instagram. Turn up your device volume and note whether you hear sound, see an audio-unavailable message, or see a sound attribution.
- Play the saved file in a second video player. Check the player’s mute and volume controls, as well as the device’s selected audio output. A muted player or output routed elsewhere can make a file seem silent.
- Compare the results. If the Reel is silent in Instagram, ask the creator for an authorized source file. If it plays with sound in Instagram but not in the saved file, retry Instagram’s own download option if it is offered.
If the official download is still silent, the available Meta guidance does not identify a universal cause or guarantee that every kind of audio accompanies every kind of download. The exact result may depend on the Reel, account, region, app version, or download method; those variables are not established as the cause in any particular case.

What kind of audio is in the Reel?
Reels can use music selected from Instagram’s music library or audio recorded by the creator. Meta’s 2020 Reels announcement, updated May 1, 2023, describes these audio options and says original audio is attributed to its creator. It also says people cannot use original audio from a Reel on a private account.

Music-library access is subject to rights-holder agreements. Meta says some business accounts and some types of posts do not have access, and availability may vary by country or region. That makes rights or availability a possible context for an audio difference, but it does not establish that Instagram always removes licensed music from downloads—or explain why a particular saved Reel is silent.

When a silent download cannot be fixed by playback checks
If the file remains silent in more than one player after checking volume and output, the audio may not be present in that saved copy. Do not assume that converting or editing the video can recover a track that is absent. If the Reel itself also has no sound, contact the creator or request an authorized source file.

Getting a video file does not grant permission to repost its music. Meta’s copyright guidance for Instagram and Threads says the safest approach is to post work you created or have permission to use; buying or downloading content does not by itself make posting it permissible.
Meta says the music in Instagram’s licensed library is intended for personal, non-commercial use, and that access may be restricted. Its licensed music library help page describes Sound Collection as royalty-free music and sounds for Reels and Stories, including commercial uses. Confirm the current terms and that the audio suits your intended use before publishing.
