Check an exported original frame first, then work forward through those stages: changing a rendering setting cannot restore detail that the camera never captured.
First, find where the blur or distortion begins
Compare the preview with an exported original
Export a representative clip or frame at the quality you intend to use and inspect it at normal viewing size. Insta360 says camera and app previews may be compressed to keep playback smooth, so a soft preview alone does not establish that the recorded file is soft. The app also offers an “Original Mode” preview option.

If the export is crisp but the preview is not, keep the capture and investigate the later processing stages. If the exported image is soft, check for a dirty or damaged lens, motion blur, low light, and the camera’s image settings before retraining. Video sharpness and bitrate controls vary by camera model.
Identify the shape of the defect
- Uniform softness across the export: Look first at focus, lens condition, movement, and lighting.
- A localized seam, doubled subject, or edge warp: Investigate 360 stitching, nearby subjects, and accessory settings.
- Good source frames but bent geometry or smeared detail in the splat: Check panorama projection, image sampling, and camera poses before changing Gaussian optimization.
- Long, spikey blobs in the reconstructed scene: This may be a splat representation artifact rather than source blur.
Fix blur or ghosting in the 360 source
Check lenses, guards, and stitching settings
Clean the lenses and any fitted guards gently. If safe for the camera and relevant to your setup, compare a test without third-party guards or filters. Optical accessories change the light path; the stitching selection in the app or Insta360 Studio needs to match what was actually fitted. A mismatched setting can introduce stitching problems rather than fix them.

For a seam or ghosted subject, export through the Insta360 app or Studio and compare the available stitching options. Insta360’s X-series troubleshooting points to AI Stitching in the app or Optical Flow Stitching in Studio for close-object cases. These can improve a stitch, but they cannot remove all parallax or recover detail absent from the optical capture.
Give nearby subjects room around the seam
The two lenses view close objects from different positions, so a nearby face or object crossing the stitch boundary can appear misaligned or doubled. Insta360 gives about 0.8 m as minimum subject distance in X-series close-shot advice; its X4 tutorial separately recommends at least 1 m to reduce visible stitch lines. Treat these as practical manufacturer guidance, not universal cutoffs: lens, scene, and camera position affect the result. When capturing again, keep close subjects away from the seam where possible.

Wide-angle optics can also look less sharp or more distorted toward the edges. If the underlying 360 footage is warped, supported footage may offer FOV or perspective adjustments in Insta360 Studio, while the app has a Dewarp function. These change projection or framing; they do not restore missing detail or correct bad reconstruction poses. For underwater footage, a lens guard can cause refraction-related edge blur, so a guard is not a general-purpose blur remedy.
Prepare 360 footage for Gaussian splatting
Do not treat an equirectangular panorama as an ordinary perspective photo
A 360 frame is equirectangular: its pixels represent directions around a sphere, not the straight-ahead view of a conventional perspective camera. Nerfstudio documents a workflow for equirectangular footage from cameras such as Insta360. Its custom-data guide uses --camera-type equirectangular and samples perspective images from each panorama.

This distinction matters for Gaussian splatting. Nerfstudio’s documented Splatfacto rasterizer assumes perspective cameras and, in the documentation retrieved for this article, does not directly render fisheye or equirectangular images. The documented Nerfstudio route is to convert or sample panorama views during data processing, rather than train on the full panorama as if it were an ordinary perspective image. This limitation is version-sensitive; check the documentation for the installed Nerfstudio release before choosing a workflow.
Use sharp, varied, overlapping observations
Inspect the actual images that enter training. Remove genuinely blurred frames and favor sharp observations with useful overlap and varied viewpoints; many redundant or soft frames do not compensate for poor input. Nerfstudio’s custom-data guide suggests roughly three equirectangular video frames per second as a starting point, while explicitly describing that rate as a heuristic, not a hard rule.

Hardware Note: Currently not compatible with ARM-based Windows systems or Windows Hello Face Recognition.
For each panorama, that guide suggests sampling eight perspective images by default and trying 14 if detail or alignment is inadequate. Treat both counts as workflow suggestions, not universal requirements: inspect the resulting views and alignment for your scene.

In head-mounted footage, the operator’s head or hand may contaminate the bottom of the panorama. Nerfstudio recommends holding the video above the head to concentrate the operator near the bottom; its example crops away 20% of that region. Adjust the crop to the actual footage rather than applying that percentage blindly.

Reconstruction maps image pixels to rays using camera intrinsics and camera poses (extrinsics). Nerfstudio documents equirectangular or spherical and fisheye camera models separately from the usual perspective model. A wrong camera model or poor poses can bend geometry or smear otherwise acceptable image detail, so verify the projection and alignment used by the processing pipeline.

When Gaussian blobs are long and spikey
Nerfstudio documents pipeline.model.use_scale_regularization as an option intended to encourage more even Gaussian shapes when the splat has elongated, spikey blobs. Evaluate it for that representation artifact; it is not a general sharpening switch and will not fix motion blur, stitching errors, or incorrect camera poses.
When the camera itself appears out of focus
If exported footage is consistently out of focus across modes and scenes, Insta360 advises professional repair diagnostics because a damaged lens may be responsible. Do not keep tuning the splat when the camera output itself is the problem.

Calibrate stitching only on supported models
If stitching changed after a drop or lens replacement, Insta360 documents built-in stitching calibration for X4 Air, X5, and X6. Its procedure calls for removing accessories and calibrating outdoors in a well-lit, open area with large objects roughly 10 m away. This guidance is not documented here as applying to every Insta360 model; check the instructions for the exact camera before using it.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Export a full-quality sample. Compare the exported frame with the camera or app preview before judging capture quality.
- Check the optics and accessory selection. Clean lenses and guards, verify the fitted-guard stitching option, and compare without third-party optical accessories when safe and applicable.
- Compare stitch exports. Use Insta360 Studio or the app and try the stitching options available for the camera and scene.
- Review training frames. Remove blurry images, look for useful overlap and viewpoint variation, and crop out distracting operator or hand regions where appropriate.
- Verify projection and poses. Ensure the pipeline handles equirectangular input correctly and that the camera model and alignment suit the extracted images.
- Tune optimization for the artifact you see. Try scale regularization for long, spikey Gaussians only after checking the source and geometry.
- Escalate camera problems. Use stitching calibration only if the exact model supports it; seek repair diagnostics if all exports remain out of focus.
For a reshoot, an invisible selfie stick can reduce the camera body and hand in the frame, but compatibility and framing matter. Insta360 recommends one for that purpose; no particular current model is established here.
