In ESP-IDF, the task watchdog normally reports a timeout and lets the application continue; a reboot requires the right watchdog, a monitored task or health condition, panic behavior, and a reset-capable panic action.
What the watchdog is—and what it is not
“The server is frozen” can describe several different failures: a task stuck in a loop, interrupts blocked, a network stack that no longer answers, an application state machine that stopped making progress, or a board that has already reset and failed during boot. ESP-IDF’s watchdogs cover different parts of that chain. A timer only reacts when its monitored condition is violated; it does not test every layer of a network service.

The details below apply to the ESP32 target in Espressif’s ESP-IDF documentation. The current stable guide is labeled v6.1, with the watchdog behavior also corroborated in v5.5 and the task-watchdog panic option documented in v5.1. Arduino-ESP32, another RTOS, a different chip variant, or a project with different configuration defaults can behave differently.
Three watchdogs, three failure conditions
| Watchdog | Failure it detects | Typical coverage | Timeout behavior described by ESP-IDF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interrupt Watchdog Timer (IWDT) | Interrupts blocked long enough to delay the FreeRTOS tick | CPU interrupt and critical-section responsiveness | Normally enters the panic handler with an interrupt-timeout reason; if the panic handler cannot run, the second stage hard-resets the chip. The project can configure panic behavior to reset directly. |
| Task Watchdog Timer (TWDT) | A subscribed task or watchdog user fails to reset the timer before its timeout | Subscribed tasks, users, and, by default, CPU idle tasks | Normally prints a warning and backtrace, then continues running the application. CONFIG_ESP_TASK_WDT_PANIC or the corresponding runtime panic setting is required to enter the panic path. |
| RTC_WDT / LP_WDT | Boot, panic, or low-power-domain conditions, depending on configuration | Early boot and RTC-related operation | Configurable stages can interrupt, reset a CPU, reset the main system, reset the main system plus RTC, or be disabled. |
Consequently, an application-level outage can occur without an IWDT timeout, and a TWDT timeout can occur without a reboot. Selecting the timer by name is not enough; its monitored condition and final timeout stage must match the failure you need to recover from.

Why the task watchdog often does not reboot
Its default action is warning-only
ESP-IDF states that the default TWDT behavior is to print a warning and a backtrace before continuing to run the app. This is intentional: a developer may want diagnostic evidence rather than an immediate restart. If you expect a reset, inspect the project’s CONFIG_ESP_TASK_WDT_PANIC setting or the runtime initialization option that enables panic on timeout. Then verify the system panic handler’s configured action; entering panic does not help if the project is configured to halt or otherwise avoid a reset.
The failed service may not be the subscribed task
A task subscription covers that task, not every task involved in serving a client. If the network server runs in one task while another task is subscribed, a dead server task can go undetected. The default idle-task subscriptions are useful for detecting a CPU that is being monopolized, but they are not proof that a particular protocol endpoint is healthy.
A subscribed task can keep feeding while the service is broken
A task watchdog is fed when the subscribed task calls esp_task_wdt_reset(). A task can remain scheduled and continue making that call even though its state machine, socket handling, queue processing, or application data path is no longer useful. This is an application-design limitation, not a watchdog malfunction. Feed only after the work that defines “healthy” has completed, or register a separate watchdog user and reset it from a meaningful health checkpoint with esp_task_wdt_reset_user().

The timeout may be configured for an interrupt rather than a reset
Hardware watchdogs have stages. A stage that raises an interrupt is not equivalent to one that resets the CPU or main system. Review the stage selected for the timer you are using, especially in custom watchdog code and RTC_WDT configurations.
How to make an ESP-IDF task watchdog reset the ESP32
Use this sequence when the desired policy is “if the service stops meeting its deadline, restart the board.” Exact menu labels can vary slightly by ESP-IDF release, so confirm them in the configuration editor for the project’s version.
- Identify the service condition. Decide whether you need to detect a non-yielding task, an interrupt lockup, or loss of application-level progress. Do not use the IWDT as a substitute for an application health check.
- Enable and initialize the TWDT. Confirm that the task watchdog is enabled in project configuration and initialized at startup. Record its timeout and ensure that the timeout is longer than legitimate worst-case work, but short enough to meet your recovery requirement.
- Subscribe the right task. Add the server task with the ESP-IDF task-watchdog subscription API, or register a watchdog user when the condition belongs to a multi-task service rather than one FreeRTOS task.
- Place the feed at a real completion point. Call
esp_task_wdt_reset()only after the subscribed task has completed the required unit of work. For a user handle, callesp_task_wdt_reset_user()after the health checkpoint succeeds. Avoid an unconditional feed at the top of a loop. - Enable panic on timeout. Set
CONFIG_ESP_TASK_WDT_PANIC, or use the runtime option that setstrigger_panicwhen the watchdog is initialized, according to the release’s API. - Check the panic action. Ensure the project’s system panic behavior is configured to reset rather than merely print diagnostics or halt. A TWDT timeout must reach a reset-capable panic path to produce the reboot you expect.
- Capture the evidence. Keep the warning, task or user name, backtrace, panic reason, and reset timing in the serial log. These details identify whether the intended monitor actually fired.
- Test without debugger breakpoints. Reproduce the frozen condition from a normal boot, not while stopped at an OpenOCD or JTAG breakpoint.
Designing a watchdog that represents server health
For a simple worker, the subscribed task itself may be the right monitor: it receives work, processes it, yields, and feeds only after successful completion. A network server is often more complicated. Its socket task may continue to run while a parser, queue consumer, storage operation, or application state machine is wedged.

Use a health-check user for multi-task services
Register a TWDT user to represent the service’s required progress. Define the checkpoint precisely—for example, successful completion of a request-handling cycle, a queue drain, or a state transition that proves the data path is alive. Have the responsible code call esp_task_wdt_reset_user() only after that checkpoint. This keeps the watchdog tied to the outcome that matters instead of merely to CPU scheduling.
Choose a timeout from measured work
ESP-IDF exposes configurable timeout values but does not specify one universal timeout for every application. Account for the longest legitimate critical operation, flash activity, expected scheduling delays, and network bursts. A timeout shorter than valid work causes false alarms; one far longer than the recovery objective leaves clients waiting.
Keep interrupt handlers and critical sections short
The IWDT relies on the FreeRTOS tick interrupt to feed its underlying hardware watchdog. Disabled interrupts, an overlong critical section, or a same- or higher-priority ISR that prevents lower-priority interrupts from running can therefore trigger it. Move substantial work out of ISRs into tasks, minimize critical sections, and avoid spin loops that prevent the scheduler from making progress.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
No watchdog message and no reset
- Confirm which framework and ESP-IDF release the firmware uses; defaults and APIs are version-specific.
- Verify that the TWDT is enabled and initialized, and that the server task or health user is actually subscribed.
- Check whether the code continues to feed the monitor despite the service being unusable.
- Determine whether the failure is network-only. A service can stop answering clients without blocking interrupts or missing a task-watchdog checkpoint.
- Check power, boot, and flash-communication logs. The absence of watchdog evidence may mean the fault is outside the watchdog path.
A TWDT warning and backtrace appear, but the board keeps running
This is the documented default response. Identify the named task or user in the log, then inspect the backtrace and the code that should have called the reset API. If a reboot is required, enable panic on timeout and verify that the panic handler is configured for reset. Do not assume that a warning itself implies a reset.
An IWDT timeout identifies CPU0 or CPU1
Look for disabled interrupts, long critical sections, and lengthy or nested ISRs on the reported CPU. The documented default reason is an interrupt watchdog timeout. If the panic handler cannot execute, the IWDT’s second stage hard-resets the chip; otherwise the project’s panic policy determines what happens next.
The service freezes only while debugging
OpenOCD and JTAG debugging change the experiment. At breakpoints, the IWDT and TWDT hardware timers are disabled, and ESP-IDF documents that they are not re-enabled after leaving the breakpoint. A firmware image that appears not to recover under a debugger may still behave correctly in production, so test watchdog operation with the debugger detached or without stopping execution.
Best Value
The board resets, then appears frozen
Inspect the complete boot log and reset reason rather than stopping at the watchdog event. A watchdog can successfully reset the chip while a separate boot, flash, power, or early-initialization problem prevents the server from returning. RTC_WDT behavior is especially relevant when a timer is retained through boot or panic handling.
RTC watchdog details that can change the outcome
ESP-IDF normally disables the RTC watchdog immediately before the user’s main function. If the application is configured to retain it, the code must feed or disable it or the timer can reset the device. RTC_WDT stages can target the CPU, main system, or main system plus the RTC domain. Review those stages when a custom boot-time or low-power watchdog is involved; they are separate from the normal TWDT task-subscription model.
Framework and version boundaries
The documented behavior here is for Espressif’s ESP-IDF ESP32 target, not a universal promise about every ESP32 firmware stack. Arduino-ESP32 may expose different defaults or wrappers, and chip variants can have different implementation details. Before changing code, record the exact framework, ESP-IDF release, chip model, watchdog configuration, timeout, and panic policy. Then compare those settings with the matching release documentation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A practical verification checklist
- Write down the failure definition: CPU stall, server-task stall, network-stack failure, application deadlock, boot failure, or power loss.
- Select IWDT, TWDT task, TWDT user, or RTC_WDT based on that definition.
- Confirm the monitor is enabled, initialized, and subscribed to the code path that must make progress.
- Inspect every feed call and ensure it follows successful work rather than merely loop execution.
- Set the timeout from the application’s measured worst-case operation and recovery objective.
- For TWDT recovery, enable panic and configure the system panic action to reset.
- For IWDT events, shorten ISRs and critical sections and move work into yielding tasks.
- Review watchdog stage configuration; interrupt-only stages do not guarantee a reset.
- Collect task-watchdog logs, panic reason, backtrace, reset reason, and boot output.
- Repeat the test without OpenOCD/JTAG breakpoints.
What a successful test should demonstrate
A valid recovery test deliberately prevents the selected task or health user from reaching its checkpoint, runs from a normal boot, and records the timeout evidence. For a TWDT configured for panic and reset, the log should identify the missed subscription, enter the panic path, and then show a reset and subsequent boot. For an IWDT test, the evidence should point to interrupt starvation rather than merely an unresponsive client. If the board reboots but the service does not return, continue with boot and application diagnostics instead of increasing the watchdog timeout blindly.
The Bottom Line
An ESP32 watchdog fails to reboot a frozen server when the freeze is outside its monitored condition, the wrong task is subscribed, the code keeps feeding despite a broken service, or the timeout is configured for warning or panic without a reset. Match the monitor to the failure, feed it only after meaningful progress, enable panic-and-reset behavior, and validate the result outside debugger breakpoints.
