Why an Eco-Drive Watch Stops—and How to Get It Running Again

An Eco-Drive watch that stops is usually depleted, not automatically broken. Put the dial under bright light for a sustained recharge, then follow the instructions for the movement caliber if the watch requires a reset. A two-second jump of the second hand is a low-charge warning on models equipped with that function. If the watch still will not run after the caliber’s specified full charge and reset, use Citizen’s service route or a qualified watch service provider rather than guessing at a repair. Many fully charged models can run for more than six months in total darkness, so an overnight stop normally points to a longer charging shortfall or a model-specific power-saving state.

How an Eco-Drive watch can stop

Eco-Drive movements convert natural or artificial light into electrical energy and store surplus energy in a rechargeable power cell. The watch can continue running in darkness from that reserve. Citizen says many fully charged models run for more than six months in total darkness, although the actual reserve varies by model, movement and complications.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That means a watch does not normally stop after a single night in a drawer. It can stop after prolonged storage in darkness, repeated wear under clothing or sleeves, or an earlier period in which the dial received too little light to replace the energy being used. A completely stopped watch may therefore need many hours of charging before it is ready for normal use. A watch that spent months in a box may begin ticking after a short exposure and still have almost no reserve left.

Some movements also use power-saving functions. When the watch is left in darkness, the hands may stop to conserve energy while the movement keeps track of time internally. The exact behavior is caliber-dependent. A stopped display is not enough to identify the cause; the movement’s manual explains whether that caliber has power save and how it resumes.

Read the symptom before doing anything

The second hand jumps every two seconds

On models with this warning, a second hand that advances in two-second steps indicates insufficient charge. It is a charge warning, not proof that a component has failed. Recharge the watch before attempting to diagnose anything else. The warning can continue while the watch is receiving light, because the movement may still be below its operating-charge threshold.

All hands are stopped

This usually means the available reserve has been exhausted, but a power-saving mode can look similar on equipped models. Give the dial a proper recharge and consult the caliber instructions for the expected restart behavior. If the hands restart only after a long delay, that does not by itself indicate damage.

The hands move briefly, then stop again

A short exposure can put enough energy into a deeply discharged movement to start the hands without restoring a useful reserve. Continued operation after only a few minutes does not demonstrate that the watch is fully charged. Keep charging for the time appropriate to the light source and model. Repeated short tests can create the impression that the watch is failing when it simply has not recovered enough energy.

The watch runs, but timekeeping is abnormal after storage

Power-save and low-charge behavior differ between calibers. Once the watch has a substantial charge, check the caliber manual for any restart, hand-position or time-setting procedure. Do not assume that a procedure for a basic three-hand model applies to a multifunction movement.

The display seems dead after a long period in darkness

Do not use the absence of an immediate hand movement as a diagnostic test. A depleted Eco-Drive can require a long initial exposure before it shows normal motion, and a power-saving caliber may resume in a way described only in its manual. Start with safe charging rather than repeatedly pulling the crown or pressing every button.

Charge it safely and effectively

  1. Expose the dial, not just the caseback, to light. The dial is the surface designed to receive light. Place the watch where the dial has a clear view of a bright source.
  2. Choose a bright source and allow enough time. Daylight is generally the most efficient option. Artificial light can work, but weaker illumination takes substantially longer.
  3. Prevent excessive heat. Bright light should not leave the watch dangerously hot. Follow the temperature limit in the movement’s manual. For example, Citizen’s B620 instructions say not to charge at about 60°C (140°F) or higher.
  4. Keep charging after the hands restart. A watch that has reached a no-charge state may need many hours to rebuild its reserve. Stopping as soon as the second hand moves can leave the warning condition unresolved.
  5. Check the movement instructions before resetting. Some calibers need a post-charge reset; others resume without one. Use the procedure written for the exact caliber.

Do not treat a charging-time estimate as a guarantee for every Eco-Drive. Citizen’s published table is for basic analog models, and actual time depends on the movement, the light level, the angle of the dial and the watch’s state of discharge. A dial shaded by a sleeve, box lid or nearby object receives less useful light than the surrounding room appears to provide.

During charging, check the case periodically. If it becomes excessively hot, move the watch to a cooler bright location and follow the caliber’s temperature guidance. More heat is not a substitute for the correct exposure time, and charging above the stated limit can put the movement outside its operating instructions.

Citizen’s general charging times for basic analog models

The following figures are Citizen Watch US Support estimates. They describe approximate exposure needed for one day of use and for a full charge under the stated conditions; they are not interchangeable promises for every Eco-Drive caliber.

Charging environment Light level and setup Approximate exposure for one day of use Approximate exposure for full charge
Sunny outdoors 100,000 lux 2 minutes 11 hours
Cloudy outdoors 10,000 lux 12 minutes 40 hours
Fluorescent lamp 30 W at 8 inches (about 3,000 lux) 40 minutes 130 hours

“One day of use” is not the same as a full recovery from a depleted state. If the watch has stopped, use the full-charge figure as a general indication of the scale of the task, then defer to the caliber manual. A complication, a small dial, a tinted crystal or a different movement can change the result.

The table also shows why a desk lamp may appear ineffective: at the stated fluorescent setup, a full charge is estimated at about 130 hours. Cloudy outdoor light is much stronger in the example, but still calls for about 40 hours for a full charge. These figures help set expectations; they do not authorize leaving a watch in a hot or unsuitable location.

A practical restart procedure

Step 1: Identify the movement or model

Turn the watch over and read the markings on the caseback. Look for the caliber number or the complete model reference. Record the characters exactly; similar-looking references can use different instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Find the matching manual

Use Citizen’s Manuals & Setting Instructions and Help Center resources to locate the instructions for that caliber or model. The manual is the authority for charging duration, power-save behavior, hand alignment and reset requirements.

Step 3: Give the dial a substantial recharge

Place the watch under bright light with the dial facing the source. If it has been stopped for a long time, plan for a prolonged session rather than a quick test. Keep the case from becoming excessively hot and stop if the manual’s temperature limit could be exceeded.

Step 4: Observe the second hand

A normal one-second advance indicates that the low-charge warning has cleared on a basic seconds display. A continuing two-second jump means the movement still considers its charge insufficient, or that the caliber has a condition that requires a reset after charging.

Step 5: Perform a reset only when the manual calls for it

Citizen publishes different crown-out steps for basic two-hand and three-hand movements. Multifunction movements have their own procedures. Because those sequences vary, there is no safe universal Eco-Drive reset recipe. Follow the exact crown position, button sequence and waiting period specified for your caliber.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Set the time only after normal operation returns

Once the movement is running steadily and any reset is complete, set the time and other functions according to the manual. Setting controls while the movement is still in a low-charge warning state can make it harder to tell whether charging has solved the original problem.

Why a reset may be necessary after charging

Some movements enter a low-voltage or stop state when their reserve is exhausted. Recharging restores energy, but the movement may still need an initialization step before the hands resume their normal display. Citizen’s support guidance distinguishes basic two- and three-hand procedures from multifunction procedures for this reason.

A reset is not a substitute for charging. If the watch has only received a brief exposure, perform the complete charge recommended for the caliber first. If the second hand continues its two-second warning after a full charge, then check the manual for the required reset. If the manual does not specify a reset, do not invent one.

Reset instructions can include a particular crown position, a button sequence or a waiting period. Missing one part of that sequence can leave the display unchanged even though the cell has gained energy. Read the complete procedure before starting, and avoid applying instructions copied from a visually similar watch.

The B620 example: useful, but not universal

Citizen’s B620 manual illustrates why model-specific instructions matter. For that caliber, Citizen recommends direct sunlight for five to six hours at least once a month. It also warns against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher. The B620 will stop if it remains uncharged for eight days or longer after its insufficient-charge warning begins.

Those numbers apply to the B620, not to Eco-Drive watches generally. Do not use the eight-day stopping point, monthly sunlight schedule or any B620 control sequence to diagnose a different caliber. Use the other model’s own manual instead.

How to avoid another low-charge stop

  • Wear the watch where the dial sees light. Clothing, cuffs and storage containers reduce the light reaching the charging surface.
  • Give stored watches periodic exposure. The required interval is model-specific. The B620 example calls for five to six hours of direct sunlight at least monthly; another caliber may specify something different.
  • Do not rely on a single short session. A few minutes may cover a day’s use in strong sunlight but will not necessarily restore a deeply depleted reserve.
  • Keep heat under control. More intense light is not useful if it pushes the case beyond the movement’s allowed charging temperature.
  • Keep the caliber manual with the watch’s records. It contains the power-save, charging, reset and setting details that cannot be safely generalized.

When charging does not solve the problem

Confirm that the charge was genuinely substantial

Recheck the light conditions, dial orientation and duration. Compare your exposure with the manual rather than assuming that a watch that started ticking is fully recovered. A deep discharge can require many hours.

Check for a required reset

If the watch has completed the prescribed charge but still shows the two-second warning, look up the exact caliber procedure. Basic and multifunction movements can respond differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official service route

If the watch will not run after the manual’s full-charge and reset instructions, contact Citizen through its Help Center or take it to a qualified watch service provider. The available guidance does not identify a particular failed part from the symptom alone, so replacing a component based only on a stopped hand is speculation.

Eco-Drive is designed so routine battery replacement is not normally part of ownership. That does not authorize a do-it-yourself cell replacement: the consulted troubleshooting instructions do not provide a safe consumer replacement procedure. Service personnel can evaluate the rechargeable cell, charging circuit, movement and seals as appropriate for the model.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Mistake Why it causes trouble Better approach
Assuming darkness stopped a fully charged watch overnight Many models hold more than six months of reserve in darkness; a sudden stop usually reflects a longer period of insufficient charging or a model-specific state. Consider the storage history and charge the dial for the manual’s recommended duration.
Stopping as soon as the hands move Initial movement can occur before a useful reserve has been rebuilt. Continue for the full-charge interval appropriate to the light and caliber.
Treating every two-second jump as a broken part On equipped models, the pattern is Citizen’s insufficient-charge warning. Recharge first; investigate service only if the warning remains after the prescribed charge and reset.
Using a generic reset sequence found for another model Two-hand, three-hand and multifunction movements use different procedures. Follow the exact caliber manual.
Charging wherever the watch becomes very hot Excessive temperature can violate the movement’s charging limits. Use bright light while keeping the case within the manual’s temperature range.
Assuming a published lux/time figure applies to every Eco-Drive Citizen’s table is approximate and intended for basic analog models. Use it as a scale, then defer to the model-specific instructions.

A quick decision tree

  1. Is the second hand moving in two-second steps? Treat that as insufficient charge on a model with the warning; begin a proper recharge.
  2. Are all hands stopped? Charge the dial for a substantial period and check whether the caliber uses power save.
  3. Did the watch start but stop again? Continue charging; a brief start does not establish a full reserve.
  4. Has it received the manual’s full charge? If not, keep charging under safe temperature conditions.
  5. Does the manual require a reset? Perform only that caliber’s procedure.
  6. Still no normal operation? Escalate to Citizen or a qualified service provider for diagnosis.

What information to provide when requesting service

Service staff can work faster when you provide the complete caseback caliber or model reference, the symptom (stopped, two-second jump, intermittent operation or power-save behavior), how long the watch was exposed to light, the type of light used and whether you followed the manual’s reset procedure. Also mention any exposure to unusual heat or water. These details do not diagnose the fault, but they distinguish an uncharged movement from a problem that needs examination.

Bottom line

Start with light, time and the correct manual: expose the dial to bright light without overheating it, allow a deeply discharged watch many hours to recover, and use the exact caliber-specific reset only when instructed. A two-second second-hand jump is normally a low-charge warning on equipped models. If a full, manual-directed recharge and reset fail, stop experimenting and arrange qualified service.

How long should I leave an Eco-Drive in sunlight?

Citizen’s general figures for basic analog models estimate 11 hours for a full charge in sunny outdoor conditions, 40 hours in cloudy outdoor conditions and 130 hours under a 30 W fluorescent lamp at 8 inches. Treat these as approximate and use your model manual first.

Can I charge it under an indoor lamp?

Yes, artificial light can charge an Eco-Drive, but weaker illumination takes longer. Citizen’s example is about 40 minutes for one day of use and 130 hours for a full charge under a 30 W fluorescent lamp at 8 inches.

What does a second hand jumping every two seconds mean?

On equipped models, it is Citizen’s insufficient-charge warning. Recharge before assuming a component has failed.

Should I reset the watch as soon as it starts ticking?

No. First provide the prescribed substantial or full charge. Then perform a reset only if the exact caliber manual requires one; two-hand, three-hand and multifunction movements differ.

Is the B620’s five-to-six-hour monthly sunlight rule valid for every Eco-Drive?

No. That schedule, the approximately 60°C/140°F heat limit and the B620’s eight-day warning behavior are specific to the B620 manual.

Can I replace the rechargeable cell myself?

The official troubleshooting guidance does not provide a safe consumer replacement procedure. Use Citizen or a qualified watch service provider if charging and the prescribed reset do not restore operation.

When should I send the watch for service?

Escalate after the caliber’s full-charge instructions and any required reset have been followed without normal operation. Provide the model or caliber, symptoms, light exposure and any unusual heat or water exposure.

The Bottom Line

Expose the dial to bright light without overheating it, allow a deeply discharged watch many hours to recover, and follow only the reset procedure written for its caliber.
