White smoke from an air fryer is usually grease—not a mysterious electrical failure. Fat released by the food, oil left in the pan from an earlier cook, or grease splattered onto a hot surface can smoke when the heating cycle continues. Loose breading, lightweight food carried into the heating element, and wet marinades or meat juices can also create smoke. Stop the appliance safely, let it cool, remove grease only as your model’s manual allows, and clean the accessible parts before using it again.
What white smoke from an air fryer usually means
Most white smoke has a cooking-related cause. Fatty ingredients render oil into the pan; oil already pooled below the basket can heat until it smokes; and splashes can land on a hot surface. Frigidaire describes oil released by fatty food and residue from an earlier use as common causes, while Xiaomi identifies fatty food and grease left from a previous cycle as causes of white smoke. Philips likewise states that greasy residue from previous use can produce white smoke.

Other causes are mechanical in a very ordinary sense: loose coating can be lifted by the fan, a light slice of toast or vegetable chip can move toward the upper heating element, or liquid from a marinade or meat can splatter into rendered fat. A smoke color by itself is not a reliable fault diagnosis. The important questions are what you were cooking, whether visible grease is present, whether the appliance was cleaned after the previous use, and whether the smoke stops after those issues are corrected.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStop and assess the smoke before touching anything
Smoke that is excessive, sudden, or not explained by the food should be treated more cautiously than a small wisp from a greasy recipe. Xiaomi’s user guidance says to cut power immediately and contact its after-sales department when white smoke is excessive. Frigidaire similarly directs users to service when its troubleshooting does not solve the problem.

- Odor & grease control: Eliminates food odors and tough grease, keeping your air fryer clean and fresh.
- Stop the cooking cycle. Use the appliance’s stop or power control as described in the manual. If the smoke is heavy or the unit appears faulty, disconnect power when it is safe to do so.
- Keep clear of hot surfaces. Do not put a hand, utensil, brush, or cloth inside while the fan, basket, pan, or heating element is hot. Do not carry a smoking appliance across the room.
- Ventilate without creating a hazard. If safe, use normal kitchen ventilation. Keep children and pets away, and stay nearby rather than leaving the appliance unattended.
- Wait for the appliance to cool. Only then should you remove the basket, inspect residue, or clean around the heating element. The manual determines which parts may be removed and how they may be washed.
- Escalate unexplained smoke. If smoke continues after the appliance is cool and clean, appears with no food or grease, or is accompanied by electrical smells, sparks, damaged cords, or abnormal noises, stop using the unit and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
General household fire guidance from the National Fire Protection Association advises staying in the kitchen while frying or cooking on a stovetop. That is broad cooking-safety advice rather than a model-specific air-fryer procedure, but it supports monitoring an air fryer instead of leaving it running unattended.
Diagnose the cause by when the smoke appears
| When you notice smoke | Most likely explanation | What to check when cool | Next cooking step |
|---|---|---|---|
| During a fatty recipe | Rendered oil has pooled or splashed onto a hot surface | Oil in the pan, under the basket, or on accessible surfaces | Use the manual’s safe oil-removal procedure and reduce excess fat where practical |
| At the start of a new cycle after cooking earlier | Grease or food residue from the previous use is reheating | Pan, basket, and any manual-approved heating-element area | Clean after every use and dry parts as directed |
| With breaded or very light food | Loose coating or food has moved into the upper heating area | Detached crumbs and food near the element | Press coating onto food and use only approved accessories or methods to keep light food in place |
| When cooking marinated or wet food | Liquid or meat juices have splattered into rendered fat | Wet residue and pooled oil | Pat food dry before cooking and avoid adding water unless the manual specifically instructs it |
| With little or no food, or after cleaning | Possible residue in an inaccessible area or an appliance fault | Only areas the manual permits you to inspect | Stop using the unit and seek manufacturer or authorized service advice |
Cause 1: Fatty food is releasing more oil than the fryer can contain cleanly
Bacon, sausages, poultry skin, burgers, and other high-fat foods can release substantial oil during a cycle. The oil may collect below the basket or splash onto a hot surface. Once it reaches a high enough temperature, it produces smoke even though the appliance is operating as designed.
Do not assume that adding more cooking oil will prevent this. Extra oil increases the amount available to pool and smoke. Where the recipe permits, trim obvious excess fat, avoid overfilling the basket, and follow the food quantity and temperature guidance for your model.
How to remove excess oil safely
Philips advises stopping the cooking process and removing or pouring away excess oil. Tefal’s instructions for the Fry Delight Initial FX10A140 give a model-specific sequence: switch the appliance off, protect your hands with gloves, remove the pan and basket as instructed, and absorb excess oil before continuing. That sequence is not a universal procedure for every air fryer.

- Use your model’s manual to determine whether the pan and basket may be separated while hot.
- Use heat-resistant protection and keep your face and hands away from escaping steam.
- Do not reach through the basket toward the heating element.
- Do not pour hot grease into a sink or onto a counter; let it cool and dispose of it according to local household-waste guidance.
- If the manual does not explain how to remove hot oil, wait for the appliance to cool before handling it.
Cause 2: Grease from the previous cook is smoking
A clean-looking basket can conceal oil in the pan beneath it. On the next cycle, that residue reheats before the new food is done. Philips, Frigidaire, and Xiaomi all identify residue from a prior use as a source of white smoke.
Clean after every use
After the appliance has cooled, clean the pan and basket after each use. Philips specifically includes the pan, basket, and heating element in its cleaning advice; however, you should access the heating element only in the way your own manual permits. Some units allow limited wiping or brushing from below, while others restrict user access.
- Unplug the cooled appliance if the manual calls for it.
- Remove the pan and basket only if they are designed to be removed.
- Wash or wipe those parts using the approved method, detergent, water temperature, and drying instructions.
- Inspect the interior for grease film, crumbs, or splashes.
- Clean around the heating element only with the tool and access method specified by the manufacturer.
- Dry every part fully before reassembly and storage.
A soft brush or nonabrasive sponge can help loosen residue, but a special brush is not required. Avoid harsh abrasives, metal scouring pads, and tools that can damage a nonstick coating or push crumbs deeper into the appliance.
Cause 3: Loose breading or lightweight food reaches the heating element
The fan moves hot air rapidly. Philips warns that coating which is not firmly attached can become airborne, and that light items such as toast or vegetable and fruit chips can be carried toward the upper heating element. When that material contacts a hot element, it can scorch and smoke.

Prevent loose coating
- Press breading firmly onto the food before placing it in the basket.
- Shake off excess flour, crumbs, or dry seasoning that is not adhering.
- Do not overload the basket; crowded food can rub coating loose and disrupt airflow.
- Keep very light slices and small pieces within the food quantity and placement limits in the manual.
If food has moved into the heating area, stop the appliance and wait until it is completely cool. Remove it only as the manual directs. Never put fingers, tongs, or a makeshift tool into a hot appliance.
Cause 4: Marinade, water, or meat juices are splattering into hot fat
Philips’s Airfryer manual troubleshooting table identifies marinade, liquid, or meat juices splattering into rendered fat as a possible contributor to smoke. Wet food can also create more splatter when it contacts hot oil below the basket.
Pat food dry before cooking, especially after marinating. Drain excess marinade rather than pouring it into the basket. Do not add water to a hot air fryer as a general smoke remedy: the sources do not establish water as a universal fix, and sudden contact between liquid and hot grease can create dangerous splatter. Add liquid only when the exact model’s instructions call for it and explain how to do so safely.
What to do after the appliance cools
Use this order for an ordinary grease-related smoke event:
Rank #4
- HARD BRISTLE STRONG STAIN REMOVAL: The hard bristle brush easily removes stubborn grease and grime, quickly strips away food residue, and cleans thoroughly without residue.
- Precise cleaning of crevices: Slim crevice brush penetrates deep into the mesh and corners of the frying basket, cleaning without dead corners and avoiding dirt hiding.
- Double-sided scrubbing to protect the coating: sponge surface gently scrubs the inner wall, rough surface to cope with scorch marks, does not hurt the coating of the pan, durable as new.
- Small brushes to assist details: small black brushes handle buttons, air vents and other fine parts to protect parts from damage.
- Absorbent Towel Quick Drying and Rust Prevention: Specialized towel quickly absorbs water, preventing water stains from remaining and prolonging the life of the pan.
- Check the pan for pooled oil and the basket for stuck-on residue.
- Look for detached crumbs, breading, or light food near the upper heating element.
- Clean the removable parts using the manual’s approved process.
- Inspect other areas only as far as the manual allows; do not dismantle the appliance.
- Before the next cycle, pat wet food dry, secure its coating, and reduce unnecessary fat.
- Run the next cook while monitoring the appliance. If smoke returns without an obvious food or residue cause, stop and seek service rather than repeating cycles.
Optional accessories: when a cover can help
Philips lists a snack cover, splatter-proof lid, or variety basket as possible accessories for certain models. These can help contain light ingredients or reduce splatter from fatty food, but they are not a substitute for cleaning and they do not prove that an appliance is safe when it has a fault.
Use an accessory only when the manufacturer approves it for your exact model. Check three things before use:
- Compatibility: the accessory must be listed for the model or series, not merely appear to fit.
- Airflow clearance: it must not block the fan or place material too close to the heating element.
- Cleaning: it should be removable and cleanable according to the same coating and temperature limits as the appliance.
Do not improvise a cover with foil, paper, mesh, or another object unless the manual explicitly permits that material and placement. An obstruction can change airflow and create a separate overheating or fire risk.

Cleaning and food-preparation changes should resolve ordinary grease smoke. Treat the problem as a service issue when any of these conditions applies:
Best Value
- FUME-FREE FORMULA: Professional-strength cleaner specially designed for air fryers and ovens without harmful fumes, making it safe for indoor use
- VERSATILE CLEANING: Effectively removes baked-on grease, grime, and food residue from air fryers, ovens, and cooking surfaces
- EASY APPLICATION: Convenient spray bottle design allows precise application and complete coverage of surfaces to be cleaned
- POWERFUL PERFORMANCE: Breaks down tough grease on contact for hassle-free cleaning, requiring minimal scrubbing effort
- BIODEGRADABLE INGREDIENTS: Contains biodegradable components in a 24 fl oz bottle for multiple cleaning applications
- Smoke is excessive, rapidly increasing, or present when the basket contains no greasy food.
- Smoke returns after the pan and basket have been cleaned and dried.
- The cord, plug, display, controls, or housing shows damage.
- You smell burning plastic or an electrical odor rather than cooking grease.
- You see sparks, arcing, melting, or unusual fan noise.
- The manual’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
Cut power according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions, allow the unit to cool, and contact the maker or an authorized service provider. Do not open the housing or attempt an electrical repair unless you are qualified and the manufacturer explicitly authorizes that work. Smoke color alone cannot establish whether a fault exists, so use the full set of symptoms and the manual’s guidance.
A prevention routine that reduces repeat smoke
Before cooking
- Read the sections covering maximum fill, food placement, temperature, and accessories for your model.
- Drain excess marinade and pat wet food dry.
- Press breading onto food and remove loose crumbs.
- Check that the pan and basket are clean and correctly seated.
During cooking
- Stay nearby and monitor unusual smoke rather than assuming it will stop.
- Pause the cycle if a fatty recipe produces more smoke than expected.
- Do not shake or remove the basket in a way that can spill hot grease; follow the manual’s handling instructions.
After cooking
- Let the appliance cool before cleaning.
- Remove grease and crumbs from the pan and basket after every use.
- Clean the heating-element area only as the manual permits.
- Dry parts fully before reassembling the unit.
Why model-specific instructions matter
Air fryers differ in basket design, heating-element access, fan position, coating, and approved accessories. Philips’s advice to remove excess oil, press down loose coating, and clean the heating element is tied to its appliances and manual. Tefal’s hot-oil procedure is tied to the Fry Delight Initial FX10A140. Xiaomi’s instruction to cut power and contact after-sales support applies to its Dual Zone Air Fryer 10L guidance. These examples show why a general tip should not override the manual supplied with your unit.
The safest general rule is simple: identify grease, residue, loose food, or moisture only after the appliance is cool; correct the food or cleaning issue; and stop using the unit when smoke is persistent or unexplained. No published topic-specific statistic establishes how often air fryers smoke or which cause is most prevalent across all models, so manufacturer troubleshooting should be treated as model-linked guidance rather than a universal diagnostic test.
