The reason is that the ionosphere absorbs less of the signal at night, allowing more radio energy to travel far and return to Earth. That added reach brings competing stations onto the dial and can make a particular station fade or fluctuate.
What changes in AM reception after sunset?
AM broadcasts reach a radio by two main paths. A ground wave follows the Earth’s surface and usually provides the familiar local or regional signal. A skywave travels upward and is returned toward Earth by the ionosphere, potentially reaching much farther away.

In daylight, the ground wave is generally the more important path for medium-frequency AM reception. At night, skywave contributes more, so a listener may hear stations hundreds of miles away—but those signals can compete with a local station on the same or a nearby frequency. Whether nighttime reception seems better or worse depends on which station you want to hear.

Sunlight creates the daytime D region
Solar radiation ionizes gases in the ionosphere, creating regions of charged particles. The lower region, called the D region or D layer, is more strongly present during the day and absorbs medium-frequency radio energy. As an AM skywave passes through it, collisions involving electrons reduce the wave’s energy. This limits the usefulness of the skywave for long-distance daytime reception.

The D region is not a hard surface that simply blocks every signal. It absorbs energy as the wave passes through, so less of the signal can continue to higher regions of the ionosphere and return to Earth. NOAA’s overview of ionospheric regions describes the regions and their day-night behavior.
After dark, less D-region absorption lets more skywave through
Without the Sun’s daytime photoionization, the D region loses much of its ionization and essentially disappears at night. More medium-frequency energy can then pass through to higher ionospheric regions, including the E region, and be refracted back toward Earth. “Bouncing” is a useful shorthand, but the ionosphere is not a perfect mirror.

NOAA’s AM-in-the-PM lesson puts it simply: “At night, the D-Layer disappears, and the transmitted signal can then bounce off the ionosphere and return back to the Earth.” The signal path, rather than a simple increase or decrease in transmitter strength, is what changes.
Why can the extra range make a station harder to hear?
Distant stations can share the frequency
When skywaves travel farther, a receiver may pick up distant stations using the same frequency as a local station. The signals interfere, making the desired broadcast noisy, distorted, or difficult to separate. This is why a busier nighttime dial can mean more available stations but less reliable listening to any one of them.

In the United States, the FCC’s clear-channel broadcasting report explains how nighttime skywave propagation can cause interference over long distances and why AM frequency allocation takes day-night differences into account. That is regulatory context, not a current schedule for any particular station.
Ground wave and skywave can fade against each other
A station may reach your radio by both ground wave and skywave. The two signals can reinforce one another or partly cancel, depending on their relative strength and phase at your location. As conditions change, their combination can produce fading or a sudden drop in clarity even when the station is still transmitting normally. The technical explanation is that the signal components add as vectors, rather than simply stacking in a predictable way.

Daytime and nighttime AM reception compared
| Listening condition | More prominent path | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Day | Ground wave; D-region absorption reduces medium-frequency skywave | More local or regional listening, with less distant co-channel skywave interference |
| Night | Greater skywave contribution as D-region absorption falls | Distant stations may become audible, while interference and fading can make a chosen station less stable |
Do AM stations change their power or schedule at night?
Some broadcasters reduce power or stop transmitting at sunset to limit interference; others continue operating at night, including high-power clear-channel stations. Practices vary by station, so there is no single nighttime rule that applies to every AM broadcaster. The NOAA lesson describes these differences, while the FCC report explains the interference rationale. For a specific station’s current schedule or power, check that station’s own information or current FCC records.

- After sunset, tune across the AM band and note stations that are not familiar local broadcasters.
- Write down a station’s call sign or identifying details, its reported location if available, and how clear it sounds.
- Listen for stations appearing on the same or nearby frequencies, as well as changes in strength, fading, or static.
- Repeat the listening at another time, such as during the day, and compare which stations are audible and how steady they sound.
NOAA suggests this kind of after-dark listening in its AM radio activity. The experience varies with location, station operation, and conditions, so treat it as an observation rather than a guaranteed list of stations you should receive.
