What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why am I still getting promotional texts after blocking a number? Because a single-number block usually matches only the sender identity your phone or messaging service can see. A campaign can send from another number, use a different delivery route, or arrive through an email-to-text gateway. Blocking, spam filtering, carrier controls and regulatory complaints are separate layers, so stopping one sender does not guarantee that every related message will disappear.
Use your messaging app’s spam or unknown-sender controls, ask your wireless provider what text-filtering tools it offers, and report unwanted messages instead of only deleting them. Never click an unexpected link or share personal information while you work out whether a message is a promotion or a scam.

Why blocking one number may not stop the campaign
A block normally matches one sender identity
When you block a number, the phone or messaging service applies that rule to the sender identity presented in the conversation. If later messages arrive with a different number or sender identity, the original rule may not match them. This is an explanation of how separate blocking and filtering controls work; it is not proof that every advertiser changes numbers or that every continued message came from a new one.

That is why the practical question is not only “Is this number blocked?” but also “Which filtering layer can recognize the next message?” A phone-level block is narrow. Spam filtering may look for broader signals, while a carrier service can classify traffic before it reaches your handset.

Email-to-text is another possible route
The Federal Communications Commission says email-to-text gateways can deliver a text from an email address rather than a telephone number. If a message arrives through that route, a phone rule aimed at a particular number may not address it. The FCC has encouraged providers to make email-to-text an opt-in feature to reduce fraudulent texts; that is an agency recommendation, not a promise that every provider has implemented the same control.
Do not treat email-to-text as a diagnosis without checking the message details. It is one possible delivery path among several, and the visible sender information differs by phone, app and carrier.
Blocking and filtering solve different problems
The Federal Trade Commission describes several ways to filter unwanted texts or stop them before they reach you, including controls on the phone, services from a wireless provider and filtering apps. Its guidance is deliberately layered: no single setting is presented as a universal block. Menu names and availability vary by device, operating-system version and carrier.

How to stop spam texts from new numbers
- Save evidence before deleting the message. Note the displayed number or email address, the date, and whether the message claims to represent a company. Do not open links merely to inspect them. This record helps you report a pattern and distinguish a new sender from a changed display name.
- Turn on the phone’s filtering controls. Open your messaging app and look for settings labeled Spam, Junk, Report spam, Unknown senders or similar. Some phones place these controls under the main Settings app or under Messages settings. Exact paths differ by platform and software version, so use the labels shown on your device rather than following a menu path from another model. Filtering unknown senders can reduce messages that do not appear in your contacts, but it can also hide legitimate first-time messages; check the filtered folder regularly.
- Ask the wireless provider about text controls. Contact support and ask specifically about text-message spam filtering, reporting tools, blocking services and email-to-text controls. The FTC notes that providers may offer tools to block calls and texts, but capabilities differ by provider and plan. Ask what the service matches, whether it sends suspected spam to a separate folder, and how to restore a legitimate message that was filtered.
- Use a third-party filtering app only after checking its terms. Some call-blocking apps also filter unwanted messages. Compare current features, privacy practices, compatibility with your phone and independent user feedback before installing one. The FTC supports this category of tool, not any particular product, and an app may require access to message content or contacts.
- Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM). Forwarding gives participating providers information they can use to identify and block similar traffic. Your messaging app may also offer Report junk or Report spam; use that command on the original conversation when available. Reporting is more useful than repeatedly deleting the same message, but it does not guarantee that the next sender will be blocked immediately.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC. Use the FTC’s spam-text guidance for reporting instructions, and submit a scam report through ReportFraud.ftc.gov when a message seeks money, account credentials or other sensitive information. Keep the message details and any screenshots that do not expose unnecessary personal data.
- Use the FCC complaint channel for persistent unwanted texts. The FCC’s current category is unwanted calls/texts with the sub-issue all other unwanted calls/messages. The agency says complaints do not resolve an individual case, but they provide information used for policy decisions and potential enforcement. File through the FCC’s unwanted calls and texts complaint page when the pattern continues.
Which control should you use?
| Control | Where it operates | What it can match | What it cannot promise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-number block | Your phone or messaging service | The sender identity attached to the blocked conversation | It does not automatically cover other numbers, identities or delivery routes. |
| Spam or unknown-sender filter | Your messaging app or phone settings | Messages classified as spam or sent by people outside your contacts, depending on the implementation | Names, accuracy and menu locations vary by device and software version; legitimate messages can be filtered. |
| Wireless-provider tool | The provider’s network or account service | Provider-defined spam signals, blocks or reporting data | Features and eligibility differ by provider and plan; ask what is actually included. |
| Third-party app | An app with permission to inspect or filter messages | Rules and classifications supplied by that app | Privacy practices, compatibility and effectiveness vary; no named app is universally best. |
| 7726 and in-app reports | Provider and platform reporting systems | Information about the specific message and related traffic | Reporting feeds detection systems; it is not an instant personal block. |
| FTC or FCC complaint | Federal consumer-protection or communications enforcement channels | Patterns that may support investigations, policy or enforcement | The FCC expressly does not resolve individual complaints. |
Promotional message or scam?
A promotional text may advertise a real business, while a scam text impersonates a business or invents an urgent problem to obtain money or information. The same filtering steps apply, but a suspected scam requires stronger caution.
- Do not click an unexpected link, open an attachment or reply with account details.
- Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, payment-card numbers, bank information or identity data in response to an unsolicited text.
- If the message claims to be from a company, contact that company through a phone number or website you already know is genuine. Do not use contact details supplied in the text.
- Forward the message to 7726 and report suspected fraud to the FTC, even if you have already blocked the sender.
In April 2025, the FTC reported that consumers said they lost $470 million to scams that started with text messages during calendar year 2024. That figure concerns reported losses from text-message scams, not the volume of promotional texts or all unwanted messages. Fake package-delivery messages were the most commonly reported type in the FTC’s cited data. See the agency’s release, “New FTC Data Show Top Text Message Scams of 2024”, for the qualification behind the number.
What US rules say about unwanted marketing texts
Do-Not-Call protections extend to texts
The FCC’s 2024 order codified that National Do-Not-Call Registry protections apply to text messages. That provision took effect March 26, 2024. It does not mean every unwanted text is automatically illegal: applicability depends on the message, the technology used, consent and other facts.

Written consent has a defined scope
The same order amended the definition of prior express written consent for covered automated telemarketing messages. The agreement must clearly authorize no more than one identified seller, and the texts must be logically and topically associated with the interaction that prompted consent. Do not generalize this rule to every marketing text or assume that an unwanted message alone proves a violation.
Carrier blocking directed by the FCC is different
Under the order summarized in the Federal Register on January 26, 2024, a terminating mobile wireless provider must block texts from a particular number after the FCC Enforcement Bureau gives notice that texts from that number are illegal. The formal process identifies the number and accounts for possible number reassignment. The rule became effective July 24, 2024.
This regulatory duty is not the same as a consumer tapping Block in a messaging app. It follows Commission notice and a defined process; it is not a guarantee that a provider will instantly block every message a consumer reports.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
Messages show the same number you blocked
Confirm that the conversation is actually on the blocked list and use the app’s report-spam command as well. If messages still arrive, ask the provider whether its network-level service can block or classify that sender. A phone block and a provider block are separate controls, so one can fail to cover what the other sees.
Every message has a different number
Keep the phone’s spam or unknown-sender filter enabled and forward representative examples to 7726. Ask the provider which network filtering is available. Blocking each number one at a time may remove individual conversations but does not create a campaign-wide rule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The sender appears to be an email address
Treat email-to-text as one possible explanation and ask the provider whether email-to-text can be restricted or made opt-in on your line. Do not assume the feature is configured the same way across carriers.

Reporting has not stopped the texts
Reports supply signals for provider and platform detection; they are not an immediate personal remedy. Continue using the app filter and provider tools, keep evidence for an FCC complaint, and avoid interacting with the message. The FCC explains that its complaint system informs policy and potential enforcement but does not resolve an individual case. Its guidance states: “We do not resolve individual unwanted call or text complaints, but your complaint provides valuable information that we use to inform policy decisions and as the basis of potential enforcement actions against those violating our rules.” The statement appears on the agency’s complaint guidance page.
What to expect after you change the settings
A successful setup usually uses more than one layer: the phone sends suspected spam to a filtered area, the provider applies any available network controls, and reports add the message to detection systems. Check the filtered folder periodically for legitimate messages, especially after enabling unknown-sender filtering. If the content asks for money or credentials, prioritize account safety and fraud reporting over trying to continue the conversation.
The FTC summarizes the layered approach plainly: “There are many ways to filter unwanted text messages or stop them before they reach you:” The agency’s full explanation, including reporting instructions, is available in How to Recognize and Report Spam Text Messages.
