When its price rises, the expense of flying a given schedule rises too. If fares and other revenue cannot increase enough to cover that change, profit margins shrink. IndiGo’s FY2025 accounts show the scale of its fuel bill, while its April 2026 announcement illustrates why passing the full increase on to passengers can be difficult.
Why fuel prices matter so much to airlines
Fuel is a major operating expense, so a price increase can raise costs across an airline’s schedule without adding flights or passengers. The size of the effect depends on both the price paid per unit and how much fuel the airline uses; other operating costs also affect fuel’s share of the total.

IATA’s June 2026 industry outlook forecasts that fuel will account for 31.4% of worldwide airline operating expenses in 2026, compared with 25.4% in 2025. It forecasts global airline fuel costs of $350 billion in 2026, up from $252 billion in 2025, while estimated consumption remains 104 billion gallons in both years. These are forecasts, not final results, and they describe the worldwide airline industry rather than IndiGo specifically. IATA’s June 2026 outlook puts the average jet-fuel price at $152 per barrel for 2026, nearly 70% above its reported 2025 average of $90.
IATA describes fuel as “typically being one of the largest if not the largest component of an airline’s operating cost.” The share varies with fuel prices and with the airline’s other costs. Separately, CRISIL Ratings’ December 8, 2025 rationale estimates ATF at 35–40% of total operating costs for aviation-industry players in India; that is an industry range, not an audited IndiGo-specific ratio. What IndiGo’s fuel bill shows—and what it does not
IndiGo’s FY2025 annual report records aircraft fuel expense of ₹261,973 million, compared with ₹239,046 million in FY2024. The report says the 9.6% increase occurred alongside 13.1% capacity growth and was partly offset by lower ATF prices. IndiGo’s FY2025 annual report therefore shows how the total bill reflects both the scale of operations and the fuel-price environment.
The year-on-year figures are not a direct measure of what a particular price increase costs IndiGo per flight or per unit of fuel. Capacity, fuel prices and operational factors changed together, so the comparison cannot isolate a precise price sensitivity.

Why crude oil is not the whole story
Jet fuel does not necessarily move in lockstep with crude oil. IATA describes the price premium of jet fuel over Brent crude as the “crack spread.” That spread can widen or narrow, changing fuel costs even when crude-price movements alone do not tell the full story.

IATA says airlines globally have hedged roughly one third of expected 2026 fuel consumption. Some hedge crude oil because that market is more liquid, which can leave them exposed to increases in the crack spread. This is a description of the global industry; it does not establish IndiGo’s own hedging position or mean a crude hedge fixes the delivered price of jet fuel.

Why airlines cannot always pass higher costs to passengers
Raising fares can recover some extra expense, but a carrier has to balance the fare against competition and demand. CRISIL Ratings says India’s airline market is competitive and price-sensitive, which can limit fare increases while airlines seek to maintain passenger load factors. A higher fare may bring in more revenue per ticket, but it can also make some customers less willing to travel or choose that flight.
IndiGo described that trade-off in an April 1, 2026 release. It said fully offsetting the fuel-price increase would require substantial fare revisions, and that it passed on a relatively smaller amount to customers, taking the burden on them into account. That statement is an example of a commercial decision, not a permanent rule for how much of any future fuel increase the airline will recover.

IndiGo’s April 2026 fuel charges were date-specific
In its April 1, 2026 announcement, IndiGo said IATA’s monitor showed a regional month-on-month fuel-price increase of more than 130%. The company also said Indian authorities would pass only a partial and staggered 25% increase to airlines for domestic operations. For new bookings from April 2, 2026, it announced domestic charges by distance band and international charges grouped by route. The release characterized those charges as passing on less than the full increase. IndiGo’s announcement documents that dated response; it is not a current fare quote or evidence that the same charges still apply. Check the airline’s live booking terms before relying on a charge amount.
The practical takeaway
Fuel-price changes matter because fuel is a large, variable cost, but the effect on an airline’s finances depends on more than the headline crude price. Jet-fuel pricing, consumption, capacity and the ability to raise fares all matter. IndiGo’s reported annual expense illustrates the scale of the cost, while its dated surcharge announcement shows one way a carrier may respond without passing the entire increase to passengers.
