Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAI is increasing demand for high-capacity hard drives because it creates more data than the fastest storage tier can economically retain. Training sets, checkpoints, generated media, telemetry and historical records often remain valuable after the most latency-sensitive processing ends. Cloud and enterprise operators therefore pair SSDs with dense, nearline HDDs for capacity, backup and archive. The trend does not mean HDDs replace SSDs, nor that every AI operation runs from a hard drive.
AI creates a storage problem that is larger than the training run
An AI project may begin with a model-training job, but the storage lifecycle starts much earlier and continues long after the GPUs stop processing. Organizations collect source data, clean and label it, create transformed copies, save checkpoints, retain evaluation results and preserve the inputs used to explain later decisions. Generative systems add another stream of images, video, audio, text and intermediate artifacts.

That accumulation matters because much of the data is not disposable. A new model may need an older corpus for retraining, a compliance team may need an audit trail, and an engineering group may revisit historical examples when a model behaves unexpectedly. Inference systems also produce logs, embeddings, user interactions and feedback that can become future training material. As AI adoption grows, the amount of data created per application and the period for which it is kept both tend to increase.
Seagate’s FY2026 filing describes AI-enhanced applications as accelerating data creation and increasing reliance on historical data for advanced reasoning. The same filing points to longer retention, more replication, expansion of cloud services and distributed computing as factors supporting scalable mass-capacity storage. That is a manufacturer’s description of the market, but it explains the practical link between AI and hard-drive demand: AI makes more information worth keeping, and keeping it requires inexpensive capacity.

Where hard drives fit in an AI storage architecture
AI infrastructure is normally tiered. The medium that stores a dataset is chosen according to latency, throughput, capacity, cost, energy and how often the data is accessed.
| Storage tier | Typical role | Why it is used |
|---|---|---|
| GPU or accelerator-local flash | Active batches, model weights and temporary working data | Very low latency and high parallel I/O for the inner training or inference loop |
| Enterprise SSD | Frequently accessed feature stores, metadata, indexes and serving data | Fast response for random reads and writes where delay directly affects a job or user request |
| Nearline HDD | Large training corpora, checkpoints, data lakes, backup copies and less frequently accessed datasets | High capacity per device and per rack at a cost and power profile suited to bulk storage |
| Archive and object-storage tiers | Older versions, compliance records, raw media and disaster-recovery copies | Data can tolerate higher retrieval time in exchange for lower long-term storage cost |
HDDs can feed an AI pipeline, but they are generally not the best place for the most latency-sensitive stage. A common design keeps a working set on flash, streams or stages larger collections from nearline disks, and moves infrequently used material into an archive tier. The exact boundary depends on access patterns and the storage software; the important point is that capacity and performance are separate design decisions.
Five ways AI expands the amount of data organizations retain
1. Training data and its derivatives
Raw data is rarely the only copy. A training pipeline may preserve the original files, normalized versions, filtered subsets, labels, deduplicated indexes and feature representations. Keeping these layers allows teams to reproduce a run or build a new dataset without collecting everything again.
2. Checkpoints and model versions
Large models are saved repeatedly during training so a failed job can resume. Teams may retain many checkpoints, fine-tuned variants and evaluation snapshots while deciding which version to deploy. A single model can therefore generate a substantial sequence of large files even when the final production artifact is much smaller.

3. Generated content and synthetic data
Text-to-image and text-to-video systems produce high-volume outputs. Synthetic examples may be retained for quality review, moderation, provenance or later training. Western Digital’s February 2025 outlook specifically connected expected exabyte growth with text-to-image and text-to-video generation and with demand for data lakes.
4. Logs, telemetry and feedback
Production AI systems record prompts, responses, latency, errors, safety events and user feedback, subject to applicable privacy and retention rules. These records help diagnose failures and create evaluation sets. At fleet scale, modest per-request records become a large historical store.
5. Replication and geographic resilience
Important datasets are commonly copied across failure domains or regions. Replication improves availability and disaster recovery, but it multiplies the physical capacity required. Distributed processing also creates temporary and intermediate data that may be retained for reproducibility rather than immediately deleted.
What recent shipment and financial figures actually show
Public company results demonstrate strong demand for nearline and mass-capacity products, while stopping short of proving that AI caused a particular percentage of that demand.

| Figure | What the company reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 595 exabytes of HDD storage shipped in FY2025 | Seagate reported 49% growth in HDD volume shipments; nearline products contributed 84% of total exabytes to cloud and edge data-center demand. | Evidence of a large data-center mass-capacity market. The figure does not isolate AI-driven exabytes. |
| 23% HDD exabyte shipment CAGR, 2024–2028 | Western Digital’s February 2025 projection based on internal estimates and forward-looking assumptions. | A company forecast, not an independently verified market result. |
| Approximately 34% FY2026 revenue growth and about $3.1 billion in revenue | Seagate’s FY2026 filing attributed the increase primarily to higher nearline exabytes shipped and favorable pricing actions. | A company-reported financial result; it should not be presented as an AI-only demand measure. |
Seagate says HDDs support the vast majority of exabytes shipped into large data-center deployments. Its description covers cloud and enterprise environments using scalable storage for AI-enabled computing and other data-intensive workloads, as well as backup and archive. It also identifies edge and Internet-of-Things deployments, where data is created, processed and stored close to its source, including network-attached storage and backup uses.
At Seagate’s May 22, 2025 Investor and Analyst Event, chief executive Dave Mosley said, “Technology innovation and AI are fueling exponential data growth and driving demand for the hard drive storage industry.” That is the company’s position, not an independent measurement of how much demand comes from AI.
Capacity roadmaps: shipping products versus future targets
Drive capacities are advancing, but each announcement has a status that matters to a buyer. A product shipping in volume is different from a drive being qualified by a customer, and both differ from a longer-term technology target.

Why capacity density changes the economics of AI storage
Fewer devices and racks
When each drive stores more data, an operator can house a given dataset in fewer drive bays. That can reduce the number of enclosures, host connections, rack positions and spare devices required. In a large facility, the space saved is useful for both storage and the networking or compute equipment that must sit nearby.
Power and cooling per stored terabyte
A drive consumes power while active and, depending on the platform, may consume substantially less while idle or in a managed state. Higher capacity per enclosure can improve the facility’s power and cooling burden per usable terabyte, although the result depends on workload, duty cycle, controller overhead and protection scheme. Seagate’s capacity-per-watt examples are calculated from its own documentation and product testing; they should be treated as attributed company claims rather than independent validation.
Total cost is more than the purchase price
Operators evaluate acquisition cost together with electricity, cooling, floor space, networking, maintenance, replacement drives, data movement and the cost of keeping replicas. A high-capacity HDD can be attractive for data that is large and infrequently accessed, even when flash is preferable for the active working set. Exact economics vary by region, contract, chassis, utilization and protection method, so a single universal dollar-per-terabyte figure would be misleading.
Which AI-related workloads suit HDDs, and which do not
| Workload characteristic | HDD fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Large sequential reads or writes | Usually good | Streaming a corpus, backup set or media collection can use capacity efficiently without demanding the lowest possible latency. |
| Datasets accessed occasionally | Good | Nearline or archive storage avoids paying flash-level cost for data that spends most of its life idle. |
| Active model training with small, random reads | Limited | Seek latency and lower random I/O performance can starve accelerators unless data is staged or cached on faster media. |
| Interactive model serving | Usually poor for the hot path | User-facing response times generally require frequently used weights, indexes and features on flash or memory. |
| Backup, disaster recovery and long retention | Strong | Capacity and replication are usually more important than millisecond response time. |
“HDD for AI” therefore describes a tier, not a single workload. A data lake may keep its authoritative copy on high-capacity disks while an orchestrator places the subset needed for a training epoch on SSDs. Intelligent prefetching, caching and scheduling can hide some disk latency, but they do not turn an HDD into an SSD.

A practical method for planning an AI storage tier
- Inventory every data class. List raw inputs, transformed data, labels, checkpoints, generated outputs, logs, embeddings, backups and disaster-recovery copies. Record ownership and retention requirements for each class.
- Measure access rather than guessing. For each class, note read frequency, write rate, request size, sequential versus random behavior and the maximum acceptable retrieval delay. “Used by AI” is too broad a classification to choose hardware.
- Calculate the protected capacity. Start with the logical dataset, then account for checkpoints, versions, replicas, parity or erasure-coding overhead, metadata and free space needed for rebuilds. Use the protected, usable figure when sizing racks.
- Separate the hot working set. Keep latency-sensitive weights, indexes and frequently reused features on flash or memory. Stage larger collections from HDD before a job needs them, and define what happens when the cache fills.
- Model throughput at concurrency. Test the number of simultaneous jobs, rebuild traffic and background scans together. A drive tier that handles one sequential stream may behave differently when many workers issue requests.
- Check product status and compatibility. Confirm whether a proposed drive is shipping in volume, in customer qualification or only on a roadmap. Verify interface, host-bus-adapter support, enclosure firmware, vibration tolerance, workload rating and warranty terms.
- Plan failure and recovery. Set rebuild priorities, spare capacity and recovery-time objectives before deployment. Higher-capacity drives can reduce device count but may make an individual rebuild move more data, so protection software and network bandwidth must be sized accordingly.
- Review the lifecycle. Define when data moves from flash to nearline HDD, from nearline to archive, and when it can be deleted. Automated policies prevent expensive hot storage from becoming a permanent home for every artifact.
How to read vendor efficiency and demand claims
Three checks prevent the most common overstatements.
- Keep the owner attached to the number. Seagate’s shipment, capacity and efficiency figures describe its products and market view. Western Digital’s 23% CAGR is its internal forecast. Neither is a neutral industry census.
- Distinguish correlation from causation. Nearline exabyte growth and higher revenue are consistent with expanding cloud, backup, archive and AI-enabled workloads, but the cited filings do not assign a precise share of demand solely to AI.
- Separate availability from aspiration. “Shipping in volume,” “in qualification” and “planned for production” describe different procurement risks. A roadmap capacity should not be used to size a system that must be delivered immediately.
The available figures also do not provide a neutral SSD-versus-HDD price comparison, an independent global HDD forecast or a benchmark that applies to every AI pipeline. Buyers should request workload-specific tests and current quotations rather than extrapolating from a headline capacity or a vendor’s example deployment.
What this means for smaller teams and personal archives
The same pattern appears below hyperscale, but at a smaller scale. A team building a local archive or NAS can place completed projects, raw media, backup sets and older model checkpoints on high-capacity internal or NAS-rated HDDs, while keeping active datasets on SSDs. Compatibility, vibration behavior, backup policy, interface support and recovery time matter more than the largest advertised capacity.

The 44TB products described in Seagate’s hyperscale announcements are aimed at large cloud customers and should not be treated as ordinary consumer purchases. Retail availability, pricing and suitability must be checked for the specific model and enclosure. A smaller drive with an established warranty and a tested backup workflow is often a safer choice than planning around a capacity that is still restricted to qualification or volume customers.
The practical conclusion
AI is a demand multiplier for storage because it creates, copies and preserves data at every stage of a system’s life. SSDs and accelerator memory remain essential for hot, latency-sensitive operations; high-capacity HDDs absorb the much larger pool of warm, cold, backup and archival information. Reported shipments, company forecasts and announced 40TB-to-44TB roadmaps show why manufacturers are investing in mass-capacity products, but they do not prove that AI alone explains the market. The sound design is a tiered one: put the working set where performance requires it, and place the growing historical record on the densest storage that meets its access, resilience and retention requirements.
