A generated clip can bend facial features, change a person’s identity between frames, make joints move unnaturally, flicker textures, drift the background, or make an object disappear. These failures become more likely when a prompt leaves the action or camera behavior ambiguous, when one short clip asks for too many events, or when the model has too little visual reference. The most reliable response is to simplify the shot, state the subject and camera actions separately, anchor the appearance with an image or keyframes, and use editing only for problems an editor can actually fix.
No workflow guarantees perfect identity or anatomy. The controls described below improve constraints and make failures easier to diagnose; they do not turn a generative model into a conventional camera.

What “distorted” AI video actually looks like
People use “distortion” to describe several different artifact patterns. Separating them matters because a prompt change may help one pattern while doing nothing for another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Face or body deformation: eyes, mouths, hands, limbs, or facial proportions change shape during a shot.
- Identity drift: a character resembles the reference at the beginning but gradually becomes a different-looking person.
- Flicker and texture instability: skin, hair, clothing, text, or fine detail changes from frame to frame.
- Motion and joint anomalies: a turn, walk, hand movement, or contact with an object looks physically impossible.
- Boundary and object errors: edges shimmer, backgrounds bend, or an object changes, merges with another object, or disappears.
- Camera drift: the viewpoint moves or shakes even though the intended shot was static.
A 2025 preprint, Simple Visual Artifact Detection in Sora-Generated Videos, uses categories including boundary/edge defects, texture/noise issues, movement/joint anomalies, and object mismatches or disappearances. Its categories are useful descriptions of visible failures, not a taxonomy adopted by every vendor.

The paper manually annotated 300 frames from 15 Sora-generated videos. Its best ResNet-50 model achieved 94.14% average multi-label classification accuracy on that classification task. That number is not the percentage of videos with artifacts, a prevalence rate, or a general quality score for Sora or other generators. No broad population statistic establishing how often AI video faces or motion distort was established in the available evidence.
Why faces and movement fail
Video generation must produce a sequence that remains visually coherent while changing over time. The available documentation supports a cautious explanation: models can fail to preserve details and coherent movement, and the number of plausible continuations grows when the requested action, camera path, or scene progression is underspecified. Conversely, a prompt that combines many actions, scene changes, and style shifts can give the model conflicting goals.
That is an inference from documented limitations and prompting guidance, not a claim that prompt ambiguity is the technical cause of every malformed face. Adobe explicitly lists “distorted facial or body features” as a known Firefly limitation and asks users to report such results. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guidance says resolution affects visual fidelity and motion consistency. The artifact study shows that joint anomalies and object mismatches can be identified in a sample of generated outputs. Together, these sources establish recurring failure modes, not one universal explanation for every model.
Ambiguous instructions leave too many choices
“Make it cinematic and dynamic” does not specify who moves, what changes, how quickly it happens, or whether the camera moves. Runway’s Gen-4 guide warns, “Avoid overly complex prompts,” and recommends a simple description of the desired motion in one scene. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide similarly says, “Movement is often the hardest part to get right, so keep it simple.” A short clip has limited time to reconcile multiple events, so an overloaded instruction can produce an unintended compromise.
Subject motion and camera motion interact
A turning head plus a dolly, whip pan, changing focal length, and a moving background gives the model several coordinated trajectories to invent. If the camera is supposed to be still but the prompt merely says “cinematic,” the result may include unwanted motion. The apparent face warp can then be partly a tracking or viewpoint problem rather than a single-frame drawing error.
References constrain the start, not every frame
An image supplies visual starting information—subject, composition, color, lighting, and style—but it does not force every intermediate frame to preserve the same face. OpenAI describes image input as an anchor for the first frame, composition, and character design. Runway says an input image establishes the visual starting point so the prompt can focus on motion. Adobe supports first and last keyframes as fixed points that guide where a clip starts and ends. These are useful constraints, not a promise of perfect continuity.

Resolution and framing affect visible quality
OpenAI states that resolution directly influences visual fidelity and motion consistency; lower resolution can introduce softness or artifacts. Adobe’s FAQ also says its video model may center-crop an input image to fit the expected size, potentially removing content near the edges. A face close to an edge, a hand cut off by the crop, or a reference with weak lighting gives the model less dependable information.
A practical repair workflow
Use the following sequence when a clip has a warped face, unstable movement, or a drifting scene. Change one major variable at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
1. Define one shot, one subject, and one principal action
Start by reducing the clip to a single visible event. Identify the subject, the action, and the camera behavior. For example:
One woman stands beside a window. She slowly turns her head toward the window. Locked camera; no camera movement. Natural daylight, medium close-up.
This is more controllable than “A cinematic woman has an emotional, dynamic moment as the room transforms around her.” If a story needs several events, generate separate shots and assemble them in an editor. Runway recommends simple, direct descriptions for its 5- and 10-second Gen-4 clips, while OpenAI recommends one clear camera move and one clear subject action per Sora 2 shot.
2. Write subject motion and camera motion as separate statements
Use explicit physical verbs: “turns her head slowly,” “raises the cup to her mouth,” “walks three steps toward the door.” Then state the camera instruction: “locked camera,” “slow left-to-right pan,” or “gentle push-in.” Do not rely on style words to imply movement.

If the face or background warps during a moving shot, retry with a static or very limited camera and a smaller subject action. Runway’s image-to-video guidance says reducing camera motion and stabilizing the result in an editor can help achieve the desired effect. Adobe’s image-to-video workflow includes a Static camera choice when a first frame is used.

Runway’s Gen-4 guidance has a tool-specific caveat: negative phrasing may be unpredictable or produce the opposite result. For Gen-4, write the desired positive state—“Locked camera. The camera remains still”—rather than relying on “do not move the camera.” Do not generalize that rule to every video generator.
3. Choose a clean, usable reference image
When identity or composition matters, begin with a well-framed image showing the whole relevant subject. Keep the face large enough to contain useful detail, avoid severe motion blur, and make sure hair, hands, and clothing are not hidden by the crop. Match the reference’s aspect ratio to the requested output where possible.
Runway says the input image conveys the subject, composition, colors, lighting, and style. OpenAI describes an image as an anchor for the first frame and character design. Adobe allows a first keyframe and, where supported, a last keyframe. A last keyframe can define the intended endpoint, but the model still has to invent the path between the two images.
Check the framing after upload. Adobe documents center-cropping to fit the expected video size, which can remove edge content. Reframe the source before generation if an important hand, face, or object is likely to be cut off.
4. Add keyframes when the start and end states matter
Use a first keyframe when the opening composition must be controlled. Use a last keyframe when the ending pose or arrangement must also be controlled. Keep the action between them physically plausible: a person can turn from profile to three-quarter view, but an abrupt change from seated to standing in a very short clip leaves the model an unrealistic transition to invent.
5. Iterate one control at a time
- Save the original reference image and prompt.
- Generate a baseline with one action and a locked camera.
- If the face is unstable, keep the action and reference unchanged while testing a different crop or a higher supported resolution.
- If motion is malformed, keep the reference unchanged while reducing the action’s speed, range, or complexity.
- If the background drifts, keep the subject action unchanged while switching to a static camera or a simpler scene.
- Record which change produced each result, then retain the cleanest take rather than endlessly stacking prompt adjectives.
This one-variable method is practical troubleshooting inferred from the documented controls; it is not a vendor-validated guarantee. If the face remains visibly malformed, regenerate from the clean reference instead of assuming sharpening or upscaling will restore correct anatomy.

6. Edit only the problem an editor can address
Post-production is useful for selecting a better take, trimming a brief bad segment, cutting between shots, or reducing camera shake. Runway specifically mentions stabilizing a shot in a video editor. Adobe documents opening generated video in Firefly’s editor or handing it off to Premiere.

Stabilization changes the apparent camera path; it does not reliably repair a face whose shape changes between frames. Generic sharpening, frame interpolation, or upscaling may make an artifact more conspicuous without reconstructing the intended eyes, mouth, or joints. If anatomy is wrong, a new generation or a cutaway is usually more honest than pretending an effect restored it.

The following comparison lists documented controls rather than ranking image quality. The sources are feature guides and limitation pages, not controlled head-to-head tests.
| Tool and source | Reference and keyframe controls | Motion and camera guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runway Gen-4 | Input image anchors subject, composition, color, lighting, and style. | Use a simple single-scene prompt; describe subject action and camera movement directly. Positive phrasing is advised for Gen-4. | Gen-4 guidance covers 5- and 10-second clips; negative phrasing may be unpredictable for this tool. |
| Runway image-to-video | Image supplies the visual starting point. | Reducing camera motion and stabilizing the result can help. | Stabilization addresses camera movement, not guaranteed anatomy repair. |
| OpenAI Sora 2 | Image input anchors the first frame, composition, and character design. | Keep movement simple: one clear camera move and one clear subject action. | OpenAI says resolution affects visual fidelity and motion consistency; this is official guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
| Adobe Firefly image-to-video | Supports first and last keyframes. | Camera choices include Static and Handheld. | Feature availability can vary by geography, user type, regulatory requirements, and plan. |
| Adobe Firefly limitations | Documents known generation limitations. | Not a motion-prompting guide. | Adobe explicitly acknowledges distorted facial or body features and asks users to report them. |
Prompt patterns that make troubleshooting easier
Locked-camera portrait
Medium close-up of a man facing the camera. He blinks once and slowly turns his eyes toward the window. Locked camera; the camera remains still. Soft indoor daylight.
Small, explicit camera move
A cyclist rides past the same storefront from left to right. The camera makes one slow lateral pan following the cyclist. Keep the storefront geometry stable.
Keyframe-guided transition
Start with the subject seated at the desk. She stands slowly and takes one step toward the door. End with her beside the door, matching the final keyframe. One continuous action; gentle forward camera move.
These examples do not guarantee success. Their purpose is to make the requested event observable and to prevent a style description from carrying the entire motion instruction.
Diagnose the symptom before changing the prompt
| Visible symptom | First change to test | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Face changes while the subject barely moves | Use a cleaner, larger reference; lock the camera; reduce the action. | Sharpening will restore the original identity. |
| Background bends during a pan | Try a static camera or a smaller pan, then test stabilization. | The subject prompt alone controls the background. |
| Hands or joints move impossibly | Replace a compound action with one slow physical action. | Every malformed joint has the same technical cause. |
| Texture flickers or text changes | Simplify the scene and remove unnecessary style changes; use a clean reference. | A high-resolution export guarantees temporal consistency. |
| Important content is missing at the edge | Reframe the source to account for center-cropping. | The uploaded image will always retain its original boundaries. |
What the evidence does—and does not—support
Vendor guidance consistently supports simpler prompts, explicit physical action, separate camera instructions, reference images, and constrained camera movement. Adobe’s documentation confirms that distorted faces and bodies remain a known limitation. OpenAI’s guide adds a resolution-related fidelity trade-off. The 2025 Sora artifact paper demonstrates that several visible artifact classes can be labeled in generated footage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNone of those sources supplies a universal failure rate, proves that one prompt trick works across all models, or establishes that a particular generator has the best face consistency. Tool behavior, model version, output resolution, clip length, image framing, and account availability can change. Treat each documented control as a way to reduce uncertainty, not as a guarantee of artifact-free video.

When to regenerate, cut, or accept the result
- Regenerate: the face, hands, or body are visibly malformed in the part viewers must see.
- Cut or shorten: only a brief interval fails and a clean start or end remains usable.
- Stabilize: the main defect is unwanted camera shake or drift, not changing anatomy.
- Use a cutaway: a reaction, wide shot, prop, or environment can hide a short unstable transition without claiming that it was repaired.
- Accept with disclosure: stylized or surreal work may intentionally retain a non-photoreal artifact, but do not present it as realistic identity-preserving footage.
The practical goal is controlled, usable shots—not a promise that current generators preserve every face and joint perfectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my AI video keep changing the face?
Identity can drift because a reference image constrains the visual starting point but does not force every intermediate frame to preserve the same features. Use a clean, well-framed reference, simplify the action, and reduce camera movement; if the face remains malformed, regenerate or cut the affected segment.
Will a higher resolution fix distorted faces?
Higher resolution can improve visual fidelity and motion consistency in some workflows, and OpenAI documents that lower resolution can introduce softness or artifacts. It is not an anatomy repair and does not guarantee stable identity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I use negative prompts to stop warping?
It depends on the tool. Runway’s Gen-4 guidance says negative phrasing may be unpredictable, so state the desired positive condition such as “Locked camera.” Do not apply that tool-specific rule universally.
Can video stabilization repair a warped face?
No. Stabilization can reduce perceived camera shake or drift. It does not reliably reconstruct facial features that change shape between frames.
