Why AI Upscaling Can Make Game Images Look Oversharpened or Distorted—and How to Fix It

Upscaling can make a game look harsh, noisy, shimmery or smeared when sharpening exaggerates reconstruction errors, or when a temporal upscaler reuses history that no longer matches the current frame. The exact cause depends on the upscaler, render resolution, game integration and settings. Identify the active method first, then compare it with a higher-quality mode or no upscaling, reduce sharpening, and judge the result in motion as well as in screenshots.

“Upscaling” is not one technology

Games use several very different techniques under the single menu label “upscaling.” Treating them as interchangeable makes troubleshooting harder.

Method What it uses Typical failure pattern
Spatial scaling, such as NVIDIA Image Scaling or FSR 1 The current rendered image, enlarged and filtered without frame history Aliasing, shimmering on thin geometry and a visibly soft or over-sharpened image when the input resolution is low
Temporal reconstruction, such as DLSS Super Resolution, FSR 2 and many engine TSR/TAAU implementations The current frame plus samples from earlier frames, usually with depth, motion vectors and camera jitter Ghost trails, crawling detail, flicker, streaks or unstable transparency when history cannot be matched to the current scene
Operating-system or driver features such as Microsoft Auto SR A low-resolution game output processed by a system-level feature with device and display requirements Fine text and interface elements can remain poorly represented when the game renders them at too few pixels

DLSS Super Resolution is a neural, temporal reconstruction method. Microsoft’s documentation describes FSR 2 as temporal, while FSR 1 is a different, spatial technique. NVIDIA describes Image Scaling as non-AI and non-temporal. Therefore, an artifact seen with one feature is not evidence that every upscaler behaves the same way.

Why sharpening creates halos and a “crunchy” image

Sharpening raises edge contrast

A sharpening pass increases the contrast between neighboring pixels. Used moderately, that can restore apparent crispness after scaling. Used too strongly, it produces a bright or dark outline beside an edge, a ring around text, and an unnaturally hard transition on foliage, fences and character silhouettes. Fine grain and compression noise become more conspicuous as well.

The reconstructed image may already contain small errors. Sharpening does not know whether a high-contrast change is a real edge or a mistake; it amplifies both. A thin branch that flickers between frames can become a bright, crawling line, and a reconstruction smear can acquire a visible outline.

Two sharpening filters can stack

Many games expose their own sharpness slider. A graphics driver or post-processing utility may add another filter after the game has finished rendering. If both are enabled, the second filter operates on an already sharpened image. Check the game menu and the driver profile separately, return both to neutral, and then add back only the amount you can verify looks better.

NVIDIA documents a sharpness control for Image Scaling, but controls vary by game, driver and upscaler. Do not assume that every version of DLSS, FSR or an engine upscaler provides the same user-facing slider.

Film grain is an input problem, not the same as sharpening

AMD’s FSR SDK manual warns that film grain or another noise effect placed before FSR upscaling can be amplified. That processing order explains why a game can look excessively gritty even when its sharpness value has not changed. Test with film grain, chromatic noise and similar effects disabled before judging the upscaler itself.

Why temporal upscaling can shimmer, ghost or distort objects

It reuses information from previous frames

A temporal upscaler combines the current low-resolution sample with data collected in earlier frames. Camera jitter deliberately moves the sampling pattern so several frames can contribute different sub-pixel information. The algorithm must then reproject each old sample to the location where it belongs now.

That process works when the renderer supplies accurate motion vectors, depth and exposure information. It fails when an old sample is no longer valid at the current pixel. The visible result can be a trail behind a moving object, a smeared texture, a line that crawls as the camera moves, or detail that flickers between two interpretations.

Newly visible areas have no trustworthy history

When the camera pans around a wall, the newly exposed background was hidden in previous frames. There is no correct historical color for those pixels, so the reconstruction must rely more heavily on the current, undersampled image. Fast movement makes this transition more obvious.

Motion vectors and depth can be missing or wrong

Particles, hair, foliage, reflections and translucent surfaces are difficult because their visible appearance may not correspond cleanly to the solid object behind them. A particle can move independently of the surface that supplied its depth. A reflection changes as the camera moves even though the underlying geometry does not. Transparent smoke can overlap several depths at once.

Epic’s temporal-upscaler documentation identifies translucency as a reprojection challenge. Microsoft’s FSR 2 sample describes reactive masks for effects such as particles and reflections, telling the reconstruction where historical data should be trusted less. Without suitable masks or vectors, history can leak into the new frame as ghosting or streaks.

Camera cuts and exposure changes need resets

A hard cut, teleport, respawn or major view change invalidates most of the previous frame history. The game should signal a reset so the upscaler starts accumulating from the new view. Exposure changes also need correct handling. NVIDIA’s DLSS integration guidance calls for accurate motion vectors, compatible jitter and correct exposure, and warns that incorrect or missing jitter can increase flicker. These are developer integration responsibilities; a player cannot repair a missing reset signal with a driver sharpness slider.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

  • Halos visible even in a still image: excessive sharpening, or sharpening applied more than once, is the first hypothesis.
  • Foliage, wires or thin lines crawl mainly while moving: temporal instability or insufficient input resolution is more likely than a simple sharpness problem.
  • A moving character leaves a trail: history reprojection, motion-vector accuracy or an object that was not correctly marked as reactive may be involved.
  • Particles and reflections smear while solid walls look stable: transparency and effects handling are likely contributors.
  • Menus, subtitles or small HUD text look rough: the interface may be rendered at the low input resolution, or the system feature may not preserve that detail.
  • Everything looks noisy after enabling the feature: check film grain and other pre-upscale effects before changing reconstruction modes.

These mappings are useful diagnostic hypotheses, not guarantees. A poorly integrated feature can produce several symptoms at once, and a game’s post-processing chain can hide the original cause.

A controlled troubleshooting procedure

  1. Identify the active feature. Read the game’s graphics menu rather than assuming that “upscaling” means DLSS. Possible entries include DLSS Super Resolution, FSR 1 or 2, XeSS, Unreal TSR or TAAU, a spatial driver scaler, and Auto SR. Record the mode, render-scale percentage and sharpness values.
  2. Create a baseline. In the same location, disable the upscaler if the game permits it, or select the highest-quality mode and a higher render resolution. Keep frame-rate limits, motion blur and other settings unchanged. This comparison shows whether the feature is involved; it does not establish that native rendering is always superior.
  3. Return sharpening to neutral. Set the game’s sharpness to zero or its default, and disable any driver-level sharpening or post-process filter. Inspect a static edge, small text and foliage before deciding whether a small amount should be restored.
  4. Test in motion. Pan the camera slowly and quickly, walk past foliage and thin geometry, and watch a moving character or vehicle. A screenshot can hide temporal instability that is obvious during a camera move. NVIDIA notes that video comparison better represents this experience than still images.
  5. Change one control at a time. Try a higher-quality reconstruction preset, then compare again. If the artifact remains, turn the feature off. Changing resolution, sharpness, film grain and anti-aliasing simultaneously prevents you from learning which control mattered.
  6. Check image effects before reconstruction. Disable film grain, artificial noise and aggressive sharpening. If grain disappears but trails remain, you have separated an input-effect problem from a history problem.
  7. Inspect text and interface elements. If the world looks acceptable but small text does not, raise the render resolution or use an alternate resolution mode. Microsoft documents that Auto SR can produce poor fine UI or text when the input is too low, and recommends changing resolution or turning Auto SR off when the quality loss is unacceptable.
  8. Verify Auto SR conditions. Microsoft Auto SR has supported-device, render-resolution and display-mode requirements that can change as Windows support evolves. Check Microsoft’s current support list for the specific system, then retest with the feature disabled if the game looks wrong.
  9. Check for a game-side fix. If only one title shows severe trails after sensible settings changes, look for a patch or a known integration issue. Incorrect vectors, jitter, exposure or history resets require a developer fix rather than a universal player-side toggle.

How to choose between quality modes and methods

There is no universal winner. Compare the options in the same scene and judge the trade-offs that matter to you.

Decision axis What to inspect What a better result looks like
Motion stability Thin geometry, foliage and distant detail during camera movement Less crawling, flicker and temporal breakup
Fine-detail retention Texture patterns, hair, wires and small environmental features Detail remains legible without invented edges
Ghosting Moving characters, vehicles and camera pans No persistent trail or stale texture behind motion
Transparency and effects Smoke, particles, reflections and glass Effects do not smear or leave streaks
Edge treatment Text, silhouettes and high-contrast geometry in a still frame Edges look defined without bright or dark halos
Performance versus input resolution Frame rate at each quality preset The highest stable render resolution that meets your performance target
Game-specific integration Whether one title behaves differently from others on the same system A mode that remains stable in that particular game, not merely in a vendor demonstration

Vendor examples are not independent comparative tests. NVIDIA’s 2021 discussion of spatial scaling and temporal instability describes its own technologies and examples, not a guarantee that DLSS will look better than native rendering in every game. No general artifact rate or universal image-quality score has been established for all titles.

When hardware and compatibility matter

DLSS neural rendering uses NVIDIA RTX Tensor Cores, so an RTX graphics card is relevant when selecting hardware specifically for DLSS support. That fact does not make a new card the remedy for an existing oversharpened image; settings, render resolution and game integration should be tested first.

Auto SR is also device-specific. Compatibility can depend on the supported processor or graphics hardware, Windows version, game, resolution and display mode. Confirm the current Microsoft requirements for your configuration instead of relying on an old list. If a game is supported but its text remains poor, changing the resolution or disabling Auto SR is an appropriate quality decision.

What the vendors acknowledge

NVIDIA described the visible behavior of spatial scaling this way in its 2021 GeForce News article: “Using spatial scaling, players may also observe shimmering and other artifacts on game elements, which we refer to as a ‘temporal instability.’” That is NVIDIA’s characterization of its technologies, not an independent conclusion that one method always wins.

Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution support guidance is similarly practical: “Of course, if you find a game for which you do not like Auto SR, you can submit feedback about the game or turn off Auto SR.” Microsoft also notes that results vary by game and system. Those statements support a title-by-title evaluation rather than a promise of identical behavior across all upscalers.

Practical settings decisions

If the image is harsh but stable

Leave the reconstruction mode unchanged and lower or disable sharpening first. Then check for a second driver or post-processing filter and turn off film grain. This targets edge contrast and noise without giving up the performance benefit of upscaling.

If the image shimmers during movement

Test a higher-quality mode or a higher render resolution and compare a moving camera. If the shimmer persists only with the upscaler enabled, disabling it is a valid diagnosis. Spatial and temporal methods can both shimmer, but temporal accumulation may make the instability appear as crawling or flickering detail rather than a simple jagged edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If objects leave trails

Try another quality mode and inspect particles, reflections and transparent materials separately. Persistent trails in one game after these tests point toward history, motion-vector or reactive-mask integration. Report the title, location and affected effect to the developer; a driver sharpness change cannot supply missing scene data.

If text or the HUD is the problem

Increase the input render resolution or choose an alternate resolution path. For Auto SR, Microsoft specifically allows changing resolution or turning the feature off when text and UI quality is detrimental. This issue is distinct from oversharpening: if the glyph was never represented with enough input pixels, sharpening cannot recreate its original shape.

Bottom line

Oversharpened edges usually come from excessive or duplicated sharpening, often made more obvious by a noisy low-resolution input. Distortion, shimmer and ghosting usually come from temporal reconstruction trying to reuse history for moving, newly exposed or translucent content without perfectly matching motion, depth and exposure data. Start by identifying the method, establish an off or higher-quality baseline, neutralize sharpening and film grain, and evaluate motion. If one game still shows trails or unstable detail, the limitation may be its integration rather than a setting you can fix globally.
