Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAI upscaling cannot recreate detail that a camera, encoder, stream, or disc never preserved. It enlarges the pixels you have and may infer edges, textures, and patterns; on a large 4K screen that process can expose compression damage, blur, halos, waxy skin, or invented-looking detail instead of producing a native-4K image.
The reliable fix is to work from the source outward: verify the stream, compare the same scene with enhancement on and off, then adjust one control at a time. If the original is genuinely low-resolution or badly compressed, the best result may be a restrained upscale rather than a sharper-looking picture.

What AI upscaling changes—and what it cannot
Upscaling maps a lower-resolution frame onto a display with more pixels. A conventional scaler interpolates values between existing pixels. An AI scaler adds a trained model that estimates likely edges, textures, and patterns, sometimes while reducing compression artifacts. Neither method has access to original detail that was discarded during filming, editing, encoding, or transmission.

A 4K television has to fill far more screen area with an SD or HD source than a small monitor does. Defects that were hard to notice become physically larger: a block boundary occupies more millimetres, a ringing halo surrounds a larger edge, and smeared hair or fabric covers more of the image. Sony uses DVD video (720×480) as a support example of material that can look poor when enlarged toward HDTV resolution; that is an example of the source limitation, not a universal cutoff for every video or television. Sony’s explanation of resolution and upscaling also notes that the streaming app determines the resolution delivered to the TV.

Think of AI processing as a decision about how to present missing information, not as a recovery operation. A model can make a diagonal line look cleaner or suppress a block edge, but it can also choose a texture that was never present. The useful question is therefore not “Is AI on?” but “Does this setting make this source look more natural on this display?”
Why the picture looks blurry or fake
The source contains too little real detail
Low-resolution video has fewer samples of every face, sign, strand of hair, and background object. Enlarging it produces larger pixels and softer transitions. If a title exists in a higher-quality edition, that version is the only dependable way to obtain additional captured detail. Upscaling an SD copy cannot make it equivalent to a native 4K master.
Blur can also be baked into the source through focus errors, motion blur, a low-quality transfer, or an old film scan. AI may sharpen the boundary of a blurred object while leaving the interior unresolved. The result can look outlined rather than detailed.

Compression damage is being enlarged
Streaming and file compression can create blockiness, ringing around high-contrast edges, mosquito noise near text, banding in gradients, and smeared fine texture. Sharpening makes those defects easier to see. NVIDIA describes artifact reduction as part of its RTX Video Super Resolution approach because simply enlarging a damaged frame would enlarge the damage too. See the RTX Video SDK overview and NVIDIA’s explanation of AI upscaling and artifact reduction.
Do not assume a noisy picture means the television is faulty. Pause the video and look for square blocks, repeated patterns, or crawling noise around lettering. Those signs point to encoding or transmission problems that no sharpness slider can truly remove.
Edge enhancement creates halos
Sharpening increases contrast at boundaries. At a moderate level it can restore some perceived crispness; at a high level it produces a bright or dark line beside faces, subtitles, tree branches, and building edges. The line looks “sharp” in a menu demonstration but artificial during normal viewing.

AI upscaling and a separate TV sharpness control can both emphasize the same boundary. If each processor adds a little edge contrast, the combined result may be harsher than either one alone.
Denoising removes texture along with noise
Denoising attempts to smooth random variation. Strong denoising can also erase film grain, pores, hair, fabric weave, grass, and small lettering. NVIDIA’s Video Super Resolution guidance warns that higher denoising can soften fine detail and recommends testing settings on representative material. The relevant controls and cautions are described in the NVIDIA Video Super Resolution guide.
Waxy faces are the classic symptom: skin becomes an even-colored surface, eyebrows lose individual hairs, and a moving face seems painted. Lower denoise strength or disable it before increasing sharpness.
Deblurring can sharpen the wrong thing
Deblurring is intended to compensate for certain kinds of motion or focus softness. On noisy or heavily compressed footage, the algorithm may interpret artifacts as edges and make them more prominent. NVIDIA specifically cautions that deblur can amplify noise and compression problems in unsuitable inputs. Turn it off when grain, mosquito noise, or block edges become more conspicuous.
The feature may not be active in your playback path
A control in a TV menu or graphics driver does not prove that a particular app, browser, file, or output signal is being processed by that feature. Some enhancement systems work only with documented codecs, browsers, frame rates, color formats, or GPU models. Others fall back to ordinary scaling without an obvious warning.
NVIDIA’s control-panel documentation describes video enhancement controls and notes that higher quality levels consume more GPU resources. The NVIDIA video-image settings help should be checked for the current driver and playback conditions. On a television or streamer, use a visible toggle or comparison demo when one is provided; do not infer activity from the existence of a setting alone.

A troubleshooting sequence that isolates the real cause
- Verify the actual source and stream. Check whether the title has an HD or 4K version, then inspect the app’s playback information or quality setting. Sony states that the streaming app determines the resolution shown on the TV. Delivered quality can additionally depend on the account tier, device, network conditions, and the title itself, so verify those variables in the app rather than assuming the television is receiving the advertised maximum.
- Use a known-good comparison clip. Pick one scene with natural fine detail, such as hair, foliage, or fabric, and another with visible compression or subtitles. Watch the same frames with enhancement on and off. NVIDIA recommends representative-content testing because a setting that helps clean animation or a well-encoded stream may damage grainy film or a heavily compressed clip.
- Change one control at a time. If outlines glow, reduce sharpness or edge enhancement first. If faces and fabric look waxy, reduce denoising. If noise and block edges become stronger, disable deblur. Wait through several scenes after each change so that a single adjustment has a clear cause-and-effect result. These controls are practical categories; different televisions may use different names or combine them.
- Avoid stacking processors while diagnosing. A stream may be scaled or enhanced by the app, a computer GPU, an AV receiver, and the TV. Temporarily bypass one stage and compare the playback device’s scaling with the TV’s own scaling where the equipment allows it. There is no documented universal winner; the useful result is the path that looks more natural with your source and does not introduce stutter.
- For supported PC browser playback, verify RTX Video is running. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel video-image settings, enable the available Super Resolution option, and test its quality levels. Confirm that the exact GPU, driver, browser, codec, and playback path are supported in NVIDIA’s current documentation. Higher quality settings use more GPU resources, so watch for dropped frames, fan noise, or other signs that the system is overloaded. The official compatibility and troubleshooting information is in NVIDIA’s RTX Video FAQ.
- Recheck after every app or firmware change. A software update can alter supported formats or reset picture controls. Save a short reference clip and your preferred settings so you can repeat the same A/B test instead of judging from memory.
How to tune the controls by symptom
| What you see | Likely cause | First change to test | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft faces and unreadable small text | The source lacks detail, or denoising is too strong | Confirm a higher-quality stream exists; then reduce denoise one step | Texture should return without creating crawling noise |
| Bright or dark outlines around objects | Excessive edge enhancement or stacked sharpening | Lower sharpness/edge enhancement and compare with the other processor bypassed | Halos should shrink while legitimate edges remain stable |
| Waxy skin, plastic hair, smooth fabric | Denoising has removed natural texture | Reduce or disable denoise | Film grain may reappear; that is preferable to losing real texture when the source contains intentional grain |
| Grain, mosquito noise, or block edges look harder | Deblur or sharpening is treating compression artifacts as detail | Disable deblur and lower sharpening | Fine detail should not be replaced by a noisy outline |
| Banding or posterized gradients | Source or encode has limited tonal information | Compare the higher-quality stream; avoid aggressive enhancement | Processing cannot recreate smooth shades discarded by encoding |
| Motion judder or dropped frames | Processing load or an incompatible playback path | Lower enhancement quality or bypass the GPU/streamer and retest | A slightly softer steady image is usually preferable to repeated stutter |
The table describes a diagnostic order, not a promise that every television exposes independent controls. Some sets place several operations under one “AI,” “clarity,” or “reality creation” mode. In that case, use the smallest available adjustment and rely on the same side-by-side clip for each comparison.
Understanding NVIDIA’s documented modes
NVIDIA’s Video Super Resolution SDK lists modes 0 through 4. Mode 0 is bicubic scaling; modes 1 through 4 are AI modes designed to upscale while reducing compression artifacts. Those labels and behaviors apply to that NVIDIA SDK, not automatically to every television, streaming box, or application. The SDK guide also separates upscaling, denoising, and deblurring, which is why changing one operation at a time matters.
Use the mode descriptions as a way to understand processing choices, not as a universal quality ranking. A stronger AI mode can look better on clean, detailed footage and worse on noisy or stylized footage. Test a representative scene at the intended display size, because a small preview window can hide halos and texture loss.
Comparing the three common processing paths
| Path | Where processing occurs | Advantages to check | Limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Television scaler | Inside the display after it receives the signal | Works with any input the TV accepts; no extra device or computer load | Controls and algorithm behavior vary by model; app quality still limits the result |
| GPU or browser enhancement | On a supported computer before the signal reaches the TV | Documented quality controls and, on supported RTX Video paths, artifact reduction combined with upscaling | Requires compatible hardware, driver, browser, codec, and playback conditions; higher quality uses more GPU resources |
| External streamer | In a playback box between the service and the TV | Can provide a consistent playback interface and a documented AI-versus-basic comparison on supported models | Has its own source, frame-rate, color-space, and resolution restrictions; adds another processing stage |
Compare these paths on six axes: supported source resolutions, supported frame rates, whether artifact reduction and sharpening are separately adjustable, compatibility with the app you actually use, availability of a side-by-side toggle, and performance impact. Also ask whether the TV already looks acceptable. A new box is not a guaranteed improvement when the source is the limiting factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the SHIELD TV Pro option can and cannot do
NVIDIA lists AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K at 60 frames per second for the SHIELD TV Pro. That makes it an optional hardware path for viewers whose current player produces an unsatisfactory result, not a requirement for every 4K television. The product specification is available at NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro page.
SHIELD support documents conditions in which AI upscaling is unavailable: content below 480p, content above 30 Hz, or content delivered in RGB color space. In those cases the device uses its enhanced mode rather than the AI mode. The support page also provides an AI-versus-basic demonstration, which is more useful than judging from a marketing still. Check the current SHIELD TV Pro support documentation for the exact input and software conditions before buying.

- Choose a scene containing a face, hair or fabric, text, and a smooth background. Avoid judging from a single logo or a paused frame.
- Write down the current output resolution and frame rate shown by the app, player, or TV. If the app reports an adaptive stream, test after the picture has settled rather than immediately after pressing play.
- Watch 20–30 seconds with all optional enhancement disabled. Note softness, compression blocks, grain, and motion stability.
- Enable only the scaler or AI feature you want to evaluate. Keep TV sharpness, denoise, and deblur at their neutral or known baseline.
- Replay the same section. Look for halos on high-contrast edges, waxy skin, invented repeating textures, and new noise around subtitles.
- Change one control by one increment, replay, and record whether the symptom improved or merely changed character.
- Repeat with a second clip that has different material, such as a clean modern stream versus an old compressed source. Keep the setting that remains natural across both, or use separate picture presets if your equipment supports them.
This test prevents a familiar trap: selecting the most dramatic-looking image in a short demo. Apparent crispness is not the same as recovered detail, and a setting that impresses on a title screen may damage faces and motion during a full programme.
When the correct fix is a better source
If a verified high-quality stream is unavailable and every enhancement setting either leaves the image soft or introduces artifacts, the source is the practical limit. Look for a higher-resolution edition, a better encode, a less compressed local file, or a disc transfer made from a superior master when those options legitimately exist. Do not expect a different AI mode to reconstruct information that was never retained.
For old material, natural grain and mild softness may be part of the original presentation. Removing them can make the image cleaner while making it less faithful. A good setting preserves recognizable texture, avoids bright outlines, and keeps motion stable even when the result is not razor sharp.
Bottom line
Start with the stream, not the sharpness slider. Confirm the delivered resolution, compare enhancement on and off with representative scenes, and adjust denoise, deblur, and edge enhancement separately. Use documented GPU or streamer features only when your exact playback path supports them, and treat an external upscaler as optional. The best large-screen result is the one that looks natural across real viewing—not the one with the most aggressive artificial detail.
