AI can make individual tasks faster without making your total workload smaller. Time saved on drafting, searching or answering messages may be reassigned to more output, new responsibilities or tighter deadlines. Some workers also spend time checking AI, learning new systems and coordinating how work changes. The evidence so far shows real gains in particular tasks, but not a dependable, broad reduction in working hours or a general rise in measured output, earnings or employment.
Faster tasks and a lighter workload are different outcomes
“Productivity” can mean several things. An agent may resolve more customer issues per hour; an employee may spend less time in email; a survey respondent may say a tool saved time. None of those measures, by itself, tells you whether the person worked fewer total hours, stopped working after hours, received fewer assignments or earned more.

That distinction explains why people can feel busier even when an AI tool is clearly useful. A completed task is only one part of a job. The saved minutes can be redirected to another task, used to increase the volume expected from the worker or consumed by review and coordination. Different studies measure different points in that chain, so their percentages cannot be pooled into a single “AI productivity” number.
What the strongest studies actually measured
| Study and setting | AI-related result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Customer-support agents, United States; NBER Working Paper 31161, 2023 | Issues resolved per hour rose 14% on average and 34% for novice and lower-skilled agents among 5,179 agents. | It does not show that agents worked fewer hours or that every occupation would see the same gain. |
| U.S. employed adults; NBER Working Paper 32966, 2024, revised February 2025 | Twenty-three percent reported using generative AI for work in the previous week; reported savings equaled 1.4% of total work hours. | These are survey responses, not an independently recorded reduction in hours or proof that assignments fell. |
| Field experiment in 66 firms with 7,137 knowledge workers; NBER Working Paper 33795, 2025, revised November 2025 | In the second half of a six-month experiment, tool users spent two fewer hours per week on email and reduced work outside regular hours. | The result belongs to that intervention, participant group and time period; it is not a universal forecast for every tool or job. |
| Denmark employer and labor records; NBER Working Paper 33777, 2025, revised March 2026 | Two years after ChatGPT’s launch, estimated effects on earnings and recorded hours were no larger than 2%; employers also added or reshaped AI-related tasks. | A near-zero change in those records does not mean AI had no workplace effect or that unrecorded effort did not change. |
| International Labour Organization review, 1 June 2026 | Across evidence from Australia, Denmark, Germany, Korea, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and the United States, worker-reported savings of a few percent of working hours had not translated into higher measured output, earnings or employment at the broad level reviewed. | The finding does not cancel out task-specific improvements. |
Why saved minutes can coexist with a packed schedule
Saved time is often reassigned
An employer may use a faster draft to ask for three drafts instead of one, expand a support queue or add analysis that was previously skipped. The Denmark study documents organizations adding or reshaping work such as content generation, AI oversight and AI integration. That is evidence of a mechanism, not a claim that every employer follows the same policy.

At the individual level, a worker who finishes a report early may be given another report, more revisions or a new project. The workday feels unchanged because the production target moved when the task became easier.
Expectations can rise faster than capacity
Once a tool makes a task quicker, the old completion time can become the new baseline. Managers may expect same-day responses, more frequent updates or a larger volume of personalized material. A gain that would have created slack instead becomes a higher service level. This is a management choice, not an unavoidable law of technology.
AI introduces supervision and integration work
Outputs still require checking for factual errors, missing context, unsafe recommendations, privacy problems and inconsistent tone. Teams must decide which systems may receive confidential data, how prompts and files are stored, who approves an automated result and what happens when the model is wrong. Training, workflow redesign and handoffs can add work even when the original task is faster.

The OECD’s 2025 review emphasizes task and user experience, human–AI collaboration and workers’ understanding of AI limitations. It identifies long-term business effects and that understanding as areas where evidence is still developing. The review supports treating verification and learning as work-design questions, not assuming a fixed time penalty for every user.
Gains are unevenly distributed
In the customer-support study by Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li and Lindsey R. Raymond, productivity increased 14% on average, but the increase reached 34% for novice and lower-skilled agents. Experienced and highly skilled agents saw minimal impact. A tool can therefore narrow some skill gaps while adding little speed for someone who already performs the task efficiently. An organization may still raise output targets for everyone, including workers who gained little.
Work intensity can increase
Workers may handle more simultaneous requests, monitor automated systems or remain available for rapid follow-up. The OECD’s 2024 workplace paper reports that four in five surveyed workers said AI improved their performance and three in five said it increased enjoyment, while also identifying concerns about increased work intensity and inequality. Those are reported perceptions, not objective productivity measurements, but they show why “better performance” and “less pressure” are not synonyms.

What the recent evidence says about total hours
A targeted experiment found real reductions in email and after-hours work
“Shifting Work Patterns with Generative AI,” by Eleanor W. Dillon, Sonia Jaffe, Nicole Immorlica and Christopher T. Stanton, followed 7,137 knowledge workers across 66 firms for six months. In the second half of the experiment, users spent two fewer hours per week on email and reduced work outside regular hours. That is a meaningful time change in a defined setting. It should be read as an estimate for the intervention and participants studied, not as a promise that any AI assistant will remove two hours from every workweek.

Alexander Bick, Adam Blandin and David J. Deming’s U.S. survey found that 23% of employed respondents had used generative AI for work at least once in the prior week. Their reported time savings amounted to 1.4% of total work hours. Because the figure comes from respondents’ reports and covers a broad population and many kinds of use, it cannot be compared directly with a recorded email reduction or a controlled task experiment.
Labor records have not shown a broad change yet
Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard examined Danish employer and labor-market records two years after ChatGPT’s launch. They found no effects on earnings or recorded hours larger than 2% over the studied horizon, while documenting changes in the tasks employers assigned. Recorded hours and earnings can remain stable while the mix, pace or quality of work changes, so the result is a limit on what those measures detected, not proof that AI did nothing.

The ILO’s broad synthesis remains cautious
The International Labour Organization’s research brief, The impact of GenAI on jobs, productivity and work organization: a review of the empirical evidence (1 June 2026), states: “Large-scale job displacement remains limited, and worker-reported time savings of a few per cent of working hours have not yet translated into higher measured output, earnings or employment.” The statement summarizes evidence across seven countries and distinguishes reported savings from broad economic outcomes. It does not deny that particular workers or tasks can improve.
How to tell whether AI is reducing your workload
Use a before-and-after check that separates speed from the rest of the job. Record a normal period before changing the workflow, then compare an equivalent period after adoption.
- Define the task boundary. Include preparation, prompting, editing, fact-checking, approvals, handoffs and rework—not just the moment an AI system produces text or code.
- Track total hours and timing. Measure scheduled hours, after-hours work, interruptions and time spent on related coordination. A shorter task is not a shorter workweek.
- Track volume and quality. Count completed items, revisions, errors, complaints and outcomes that matter to the customer or team. More output can hide a heavier load if quality falls or volume was raised.
- Record new responsibilities. Note model monitoring, data preparation, policy checks, training and troubleshooting. These activities may explain why the day still feels full.
- Compare workers fairly. Separate novice and experienced users, job types and tool versions. An average can conceal large differences like those in the customer-support study.
- Set a disposition for saved time. Decide in advance whether it becomes shorter hours, fewer meetings, learning time, more capacity for urgent work or additional output. Without that decision, the organization will usually absorb it into demand.
What managers can do if the goal is a less busy workforce
Protect the time that automation creates
State that a measured efficiency gain will first be used to remove low-value work, shorten meetings, clear backlogs or provide recovery time. If every saved minute is immediately converted into another assignment, employees will experience acceleration without relief.

Measure outcomes at several levels
Use a dashboard that keeps task speed, total hours, after-hours activity, quality, earnings and job satisfaction separate. A single “productivity” score encourages the organization to optimize the easiest metric while missing intensity or burnout.
Include workers in workflow design
Employees know where verification, duplicate entry and interruptions occur. Ask which steps AI removes, which steps it creates and which approvals can safely be simplified. The ILO identifies coordination, autonomy and job quality as consequences of work reorganization, so consultation is part of implementation rather than an optional morale exercise.
Match training to risk and role
Novice workers may gain more from assistance, while experienced workers may need support for edge cases, evaluation and accountability. Training should cover the tool’s limits, confidential-data rules, escalation paths and how to recognize a plausible but wrong answer.

What workers can do when AI makes the pace faster
- Ask which tasks are genuinely eliminated and which are merely added to your queue.
- Keep a short log of prompting, checking and rework time for a representative week.
- Make quality criteria explicit before accepting a faster output.
- Raise workload changes with evidence: total assignments, response-time targets, after-hours messages and error corrections.
- Protect boundaries by agreeing on response windows instead of treating faster drafting as permanent availability.
- Build enough subject knowledge to challenge an AI result; speed is not protection against a confident mistake.
The practical verdict
AI is making many activities faster, but the size and distribution of those gains depend on the task, worker experience, tool and workplace rules. A faster activity becomes a lighter job only when the organization chooses to convert the saved capacity into fewer hours, fewer assignments or more control over the workday. If it instead raises targets, adds oversight or expands the scope of work, busyness remains—and may increase. Current evidence supports targeted time savings, not a general promise that AI will shorten work for everyone.
