The difference may come from the seller, location, timing, stock, shipping, promotion eligibility, or which offers the assistant found and displayed. To work out what changed, compare the same product, seller, purchase conditions, and final checkout total.
What might explain the price difference?
A shopping assistant sits between you and one or more sellers. It may retrieve offers, summarize them, or rank them; the seller generally determines the price attached to its offer. A different result can therefore reflect a changed offer, a different set of offers, or a different presentation—not necessarily a price calculated specifically for you.

The seller’s offer changed
- Time, demand, or inventory: A seller may adjust a price as demand or stock changes. These changes are often called dynamic pricing; they do not necessarily use a shopper’s personal profile.
- Location and fulfillment: The delivery region, store, or fulfillment method can affect availability, shipping, and the offer presented.
- Promotions and account eligibility: Coupons, loyalty membership, account status, or other conditions can make one shopper eligible for a discount that another does not receive.
- Seller or sales channel: A marketplace listing may come from a different seller, or a retailer may offer different net prices through different channels.
The assistant showed a different result
The assistant may have found a different seller or offer, applied different filters, or ordered results differently. A recommendation’s position can also reflect criteria beyond price. That is distinct from the seller changing the amount it charges. An assistant might influence what you notice without setting the underlying price.
The price may have been tailored using personal data
Retailers or intermediaries may use data about consumers to tailor prices, discounts, or offers. In January 2025, the Federal Trade Commission said staff had examined documents from six companies and found that tracked behavior—from mouse movements to products left in an online cart—could be used by retailers to tailor consumer pricing. The FTC described examples involving personal data, location, timing, channel, and inferred preferences. It also said the study was ongoing and that examples were hypothetical because the material was anonymized or aggregated. This is evidence of possible retailer and intermediary practices, not proof that an AI assistant charged two people different prices. FTC staff report and release.

The same FTC staff perspective said intermediaries it examined had at least 250 clients selling goods or services including groceries and apparel. That figure is a count of clients reported by FTC staff, not a prevalence rate and not evidence that every client used personalized pricing. The FTC’s January 2025 release quoted Chair Lina M. Khan saying, “Initial staff findings show that retailers frequently use people’s personal information to set targeted, tailored prices for goods and services—from a person’s location and demographics, down to their mouse movements on a webpage.”
Is this personalized pricing or just a different deal?
Dynamic pricing means a price can change with factors such as demand, stock, time, or location. Personalized pricing means a price or offer is tailored using information about an individual or group, such as behavior or inferred characteristics. A discount tied to an account or loyalty membership is also not automatically proof that a retailer calculated a different base price from a personal profile.

One observed difference cannot identify which explanation applies. Even after you control for product, seller, location, time, shipping, and eligibility, a remaining discrepancy does not reveal on its own whether personal data was used or which company made the decision.

Those are separate possibilities. An assistant may retrieve or rank offers differently without changing any seller’s price. A retailer or an intermediary could also use consumer information to select what prices, discounts, or products to show. The available evidence does not establish that general-purpose AI shopping assistants routinely set different prices for different people, that a named assistant passed personal data to a seller, or why a particular user saw a particular amount.

Ranking can affect what a shopper sees even when the listed prices are unchanged. For context, a 2024 CFPB circular discusses compensation, consumer characteristics, product features, ratings, and other variables that may influence rankings and steering in comparison-shopping tools for consumer financial products. That analysis is about financial products, not proof of how retail AI assistants rank offers. CFPB Circular 2024-01.
How to compare the same offer fairly
Use the same conditions on both accounts or devices where possible. Compare the final amount due, not just the headline price.

- Match the item: Confirm the exact product, size, model, color, and quantity.
- Match the seller: Check the retailer or marketplace seller identity; two offers for the same item may come from different sellers.
- Match delivery details: Use the same country, region, delivery ZIP or postal code, and fulfillment method.
- Compare at the same time: Prices and stock can change, so note when each quote was shown.
- Check eligibility: Compare account status, loyalty membership, coupons, and other promotion conditions.
- Compare the complete cost: Include shipping, mandatory fees, taxes, and the amount shown at final checkout.
- Identify the kind of result: Note whether the assistant showed a seller quote, an estimate, a sponsored placement, or a commercial recommendation.
FTC guidance says businesses may adjust prices based on demand or inventory when the pricing information is not misleading. It also explains that discount eligibility and mandatory fees matter to how the total price should be presented. FTC guidance on pricing and dark patterns.
If a difference remains, save screenshots of both results and the offer terms, including the seller and time. A controlled comparison can make the discrepancy clearer, but it cannot establish the reason by itself.

What do consumer rules say?
European Union
European Commission consumer guidance says traders must inform consumers when a price is personalized through automated decision-making and profiling of their behavior. The guidance separately distinguishes discrimination based on nationality or residence from price differences based on objective factors, and notes that sellers may have different net prices across sales channels. It does not mean that all price differences are illegal. The page was last checked on April 30, 2026. United States
In August 2026, the FTC sought public comments on a draft enforcement policy statement about personalized pricing. The agency said undisclosed collection or use of personal data for personalized pricing could violate laws it enforces; FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson also said the agency could not ban personalized pricing in every circumstance. The release set September 18, 2026, as the comment deadline, which has passed. This was a draft-policy development, not an enacted blanket federal ban.
