Retrieval may reduce unsupported text, but it cannot prove that a retrieved page is reliable or that the final sentence faithfully reflects it. Treat every citation as an invitation to inspect evidence—not as a guarantee that the answer is true.
What an AI search engine actually does
A search-enabled assistant usually performs several steps after you submit a question. It interprets the request, retrieves pages or documents, selects some of them, generates a response from the selected material and its model knowledge, then places links or citation markers next to parts of the response. These steps are often presented as one seamless answer, but each can fail independently.

People often describe this outcome by saying the system “trusted” a source. That is shorthand, not evidence that the software made a human-like judgment of credibility. The important distinction is between retrieving a page and establishing that the page deserves authority.

Retrieval systems are optimized first to find text related to your query. A page can contain the right keywords and still be mistaken, deceptive, copied from an unknown author or unsuitable for the question’s stakes. A personal post might be useful for describing someone’s experience but not for establishing a medical dosage, a legal rule or a company’s financial result.

Search position does not settle that question. Ranking can reflect links, engagement, freshness, commercial optimization and the system’s own relevance signals. A polished design, confident tone or detailed explanation is also not proof of expertise. Authority depends on the domain and the claim: a government notice may be decisive for a regulation, a manufacturer’s technical documentation for an interface specification, and a peer-reviewed or professional source for a specialized finding.
When an assistant selects a page because it appears relevant, it may have no dependable way to determine whether the author had the right expertise, whether the evidence is current or whether the page is repeating a rumor. The model then receives a plausible-looking input and can produce a plausible-looking output.
How a retrieved passage turns into a wrong sentence
The model can overstate what the page says
Source text frequently contains conditions such as “may,” “in this sample,” or “evidence is limited.” During summarization, those qualifiers can disappear. A statement about an association can become a claim of causation; a preliminary result can be written as settled fact; an example can be mistaken for a general rule.

An answer may draw one number from a current source and a definition from an older source without noticing that the measurement methods or populations differ. The prose can sound coherent even when its parts cannot legitimately be combined.
The model can rely on its learned knowledge instead of the retrieved page
Retrieval-augmented generation supplies additional text, but the language model still predicts the next words. It can fill gaps from patterns learned earlier, introduce a detail that no retrieved page contains or answer from memory when retrieval is incomplete. A citation placed after that sentence does not make the added detail source-based.

The model can misread structure and context
Tables, footnotes, negation, captions and quoted material are easy places to lose meaning. A page that says “no evidence of an effect” can be summarized as evidence of an effect if the model attends to the topic words but misses the negation. A citation to a press release may be mistaken for a citation to the underlying study.
A visible citation can still be inaccurate
Two separate tests are needed for a cited answer. Citation coverage (recall) asks whether the material claims that need support actually have support. Citation accuracy (precision) asks whether each attached citation supports the specific statement it accompanies. An answer can do well on one and fail on the other: it may link almost every sentence, yet link sources that do not entail those sentences, or accurately cite a few claims while leaving other important assertions unsupported.
“A prerequisite trait of a trustworthy generative search engine is verifiability, i.e., systems should cite comprehensively (high citation recall; all statements are fully supported by citations) and accurately (high citation precision; every cite supports its associated statement).”
In that 2023 evaluation of Bing Chat, NeevaAI, Perplexity and YouChat, 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by citations on average, while 74.5% of citations supported their associated sentence. Those figures describe the systems, prompts and methods tested in that study; they are not a universal current rate for every AI search product.
A link can also be technically correct but practically inadequate. It might lead to a home page instead of the quoted passage, point to a changed version, or support only one clause in a sentence containing several claims. If the adjacent wording goes beyond the linked material, the citation does not provide adequate support.

Fabricated citations are a different failure mode
An assistant can invent a paper, URL, title or quotation when it is asked to provide sources that it did not actually retrieve. In a 2025 Nature study, OpenScholar authors reported that 78–90% of citations were fabricated in GPT-4o experiments without external retrieval when the model was asked to cite recent literature in computer science and biomedicine. That result should not be read as a measured fabrication rate for today’s search-enabled GPT-4o: the experiment deliberately removed external retrieval and used particular prompts and fields.

The practical response is simple: confirm that the cited work exists, that the link reaches the intended document and that the document contains the claimed information. A citation that cannot be located has no evidentiary value, regardless of how precise its bibliographic details appear.
Searching may not happen every time
A citation badge or a search-style layout does not prove that the system fetched the web for your particular answer. A 2025 Social Science Research Council working paper analyzed approximately 14,000 real-world LMArena conversation logs. In that dataset, the authors estimated that 34% of Google Gemini responses and 24% of OpenAI GPT-4o responses were generated without explicitly fetching online content. They also estimated that Gemini had no clickable source in 92% of answers. For Perplexity Sonar, the analysis estimated roughly 10 relevant pages visited per query but only three to four cited.
Those are estimates from one log collection and methodology, not a permanent description of product behavior. They do show why a user should distinguish between pages a system appears to have visited, pages it displays, and material that actually supports each sentence. Uncited pages are not automatically false, and cited pages are not automatically the only pages that influenced an answer.
Conflicting sources expose another weakness
When sources disagree, the assistant must compare more than wording. It needs to consider publication date, methods, population, jurisdiction, incentives, expertise and whether a source is primary or merely repeating another report. Systems can instead select the most fluent passage, blend incompatible numbers or hide the disagreement behind a single confident conclusion.

An IJCAI study reported that reliability decreased for retrieval-augmented fact-checking when evidence conflicted and source credibility varied. This is why “the assistant found two sources” is not a resolution. The disagreement itself is information that should be surfaced and investigated.
A 2026 Association for Computational Linguistics paper evaluated 100 claims across five misinformation-prone topics. It found comparative differences in the credibility of cited sources among GPT-4o, GPT-5, Perplexity and Qwen Chat; Perplexity had the highest source credibility in that test, while GPT-4o showed elevated citation of non-credible sources on sensitive topics. The result is a task-specific comparison, not an all-purpose product ranking. Different versions, prompts, locations, retrieval settings and subjects can produce different outcomes.

- Separate claims. Break a paragraph into individual factual statements. A single citation at the end may not cover every clause.
- Open the citation. Check that the source exists and that the link reaches the intended page rather than a search result, redirect or generic landing page.
- Find the passage. Use the page’s search function for the relevant term, number or phrase. Read several paragraphs around it, including footnotes, tables and qualifiers.
- Check attribution. Identify the author or issuing organization, its relevant expertise, the publication date and whether it is reporting original evidence or repeating another source.
- Test the wording. Ask whether the passage actually entails the answer’s sentence. Watch for changes from possibility to certainty, correlation to causation, a subgroup to everyone, or an estimate to an exact count.
- Compare stronger evidence when stakes are high. For medical, legal, financial, safety or contested claims, consult the responsible authority, primary document or qualified expert and compare independent sources.
- Mark missing provenance. If a material claim has no citation, treat its origin as unclear. If the citation does not support the adjacent wording, regard that citation as inadequate rather than partially reassuring.
These checks are faster when you ask the assistant to list the claims separately, quote the supporting passage and identify uncertainty. The output still requires inspection; a model can fabricate a quotation or misidentify a passage when prompted.
Questions to ask when comparing AI search engines
No single score captures reliability. If you are evaluating assistants for a repeated workflow, use the same questions, date and topic set, then record:

- the credibility of the sources cited;
- whether each claim is supported by the cited text;
- citation coverage, link correctness and missing provenance;
- how clearly the system reports conflicting evidence;
- whether it actually searched and disclosed what it retrieved; and
- how performance changes for sensitive subjects and different source domains.
Keep source credibility separate from citation accuracy. A highly authoritative source can be attached to the wrong sentence, while a perfectly accurate citation can point to a low-authority page that happens to say the right words.
What retrieval can—and cannot—fix
Retrieval can reduce some unsupported generation by giving the model current text to work from. It can make an answer more inspectable than one produced solely from model parameters. It cannot certify the quality of the pages it finds, force the model to preserve every qualification, guarantee that all material claims are covered, or ensure that the displayed link was the evidence used for every phrase.
The 2025 FAccT paper Search Engines in the AI Era states: “If a statement cannot be properly cited, the system should either remove the statement or clearly indicate its relevance to the overall answer.” That principle is useful for readers too. A cautious answer that identifies uncertainty and limits is more valuable than a fluent answer whose citations merely create the appearance of verification.
The practical standard: verifiable, not merely sourced
For ordinary questions, a citation is a starting point for checking. For consequential questions, require both parts of verifiability: every material external claim should have support, and every attached citation should support the exact claim beside it. Then judge whether the source is authoritative for that particular domain and current for the relevant place and date.
AI search engines can therefore produce answers that cite fake or misleading sources without any single component behaving like a deliberate liar. Retrieval can select a weak page; generation can distort it; citation assembly can attach the wrong link; and conflict handling can conceal disagreement. Opening the source, reading its context and comparing appropriate primary or expert evidence is the step that turns a citation display into an actual verification process.
