AI coding agents can increase code output or speed on bounded tasks, but neither result guarantees better software. The apparent paradox disappears when productivity is separated into task completion, elapsed time, defect rates, maintainability, developer understanding and delivery stability. Different experiments measure different layers—and sometimes point in opposite directions.

Why AI coding agents produce more code without improving software quality

The short answer is that code volume is an input, while software quality is an outcome that depends on correctness, maintainability, security, integration and long-term change cost. An agent may draft functions quickly, yet the surrounding work—understanding an unfamiliar repository, checking hidden requirements, debugging, writing tests, reviewing a larger change and operating it safely—can absorb or exceed that time saving.

Evidence does not show a universal rule that agents make developers faster or slower. Results vary with the task, the developer’s experience, repository familiarity, model and tool version, and the way “productivity” is measured. Some controlled experiments report more completed tasks or better results on a test suite. Other work on mature open-source repositories found longer completion times when early-2025 tools were allowed. The defensible conclusion is narrower: AI can raise output on some work, but output alone does not establish better software or better delivery.

Output, productivity and quality are different measurements

A team can report “more code” in several non-equivalent ways. Each metric answers a different question:

Measure What it tells you What it cannot establish by itself
Lines of code or lines changed How much text was added or modified Whether the change is necessary, correct or maintainable
Completed tasks How many tracked items reached the recorded completion state Whether tasks were comparable, valuable or defect-free
Elapsed task time How long a specified item took from start to completion Whether the resulting code will cost more to review or maintain
Test passage Whether the behaviors represented by those tests worked Whether untested paths, operations or future changes are safe
Readability and maintainability review How experts judge comprehension and changeability How the code will behave in a production system over years
Delivery throughput and stability How reliably an organization ships useful changes Which individual tool or developer caused an observed change

METR specifically warns that lines or task counts can rise without real productivity rising—for example, when generated code is verbose or work is split into smaller tickets. A meaningful evaluation therefore pairs speed with functional defects, review and rework, operational incidents, and the cost of future changes.

What the major experiments actually found

The following results are not directly interchangeable. They used different populations, tools, tasks and endpoints.

Source and year Participants and setting Measured result Important boundary
Microsoft Research, 2025 Three randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture and an anonymous Fortune 100 company; 4,867 developers using an AI coding assistant with code completions 26.08% increase in completed tasks; standard error 10.3% This is a task-completion outcome, not an independent measure of software quality. Results varied, with higher adoption and larger gains among less-experienced developers.
METR, 2025 16 experienced open-source developers, 246 real issues in mature repositories; mostly Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet AI-allowed issues took 19% longer on average; tasks averaged roughly two hours The trial covers experienced maintainers and early-2025 tools, not every developer or current agent. METR cautions against broad generalization.
GitHub, 2025 202 valid submissions from 243 developers with at least five years of Python experience; fictional restaurant-review web-server API Copilot users were 53.2% more likely to pass all ten unit tests. Reviewers rated readability, reliability, maintainability and conciseness modestly higher. Vendor-reported, product-specific and bounded. It does not demonstrate long-term quality in an agentic production repository.
DORA, 2024 Survey-based organizational analysis Each 25% increase in AI adoption was associated with a 1.5% decrease in delivery throughput and a 7.2% decrease in delivery stability These are associations, not proof of causation. DORA proposed larger batches and insufficient testing as possible mechanisms.
Anthropic, 2026 Randomized trial of 52 mostly junior developers learning the unfamiliar Trio Python library AI group averaged 50% on a comprehension quiz versus 67% for hand-coders; the AI group finished about two minutes faster, a non-significant difference This measures short-term learning and understanding, not production defect rates or lifetime code quality.

Why faster drafting can fail to improve the finished system

Repository context is the expensive part

Generating a plausible function is easier than discovering every local convention, implicit contract, data migration constraint, authorization rule and compatibility promise in a mature codebase. An agent can produce syntactically valid code while missing assumptions that an experienced maintainer has learned over years. METR’s result illustrates why a bounded exercise and a real repository issue can produce opposite timing outcomes: context discovery and integration may dominate typing.

Larger changes increase review and integration cost

An agent can make a change broader than the request, add duplicated abstractions or touch files that a human reviewer now has to inspect. Even if the first draft arrives quickly, a larger diff takes longer to understand, test and merge. DORA’s 2024 report associated higher AI adoption with weaker delivery throughput and stability and hypothesized that faster generation may encourage larger batches. That mechanism is a hypothesis, not a demonstrated causal chain, but it explains how local speed can coexist with slower, riskier delivery.

Passing tests cover only tested behavior

Unit tests are valuable evidence, not a complete definition of quality. GitHub’s experiment used ten tests and separate blind expert reviews, which is a useful design because it distinguishes functional behavior from qualities such as readability and maintainability. A generated implementation can pass visible tests while mishandling concurrency, failure recovery, observability, security boundaries or future schema changes that the exercise never tests.

Less code comprehension can create deferred costs

When developers delegate implementation or debugging without asking for explanations, they may finish the immediate task with a weaker mental model. In Anthropic’s Trio trial, heavier delegation and AI debugging were associated in qualitative analysis with poorer quiz outcomes, while requests for explanations and conceptual help were associated with stronger mastery. The finding concerns a short learning task, not proof of production defects, but it identifies a practical risk: code that no one on the team fully understands is expensive when it fails.

Perception can diverge from measured time

METR participants expected a 24% speed-up and, after working, estimated a 20% speed-up, yet measured completion took 19% longer. Familiarity with the tool and the feeling of rapid code production can therefore mislead developers about end-to-end performance. Instrumented timestamps, review duration and rework are more reliable than impressions alone.

How to compare an AI-assisted workflow fairly

Before a rollout, define the comparison so that “better” cannot silently change meaning halfway through the evaluation. Record the following dimensions for each change:

  1. Task and scope: label a greenfield exercise, a small bug fix, a feature in an unfamiliar repository or an issue in a repository the developer knows well. Do not pool unlike tasks without reporting the mix.
  2. Developer experience: record language experience, repository tenure and whether the person is learning a new framework. The same assistant can help a newcomer and distract an expert in different ways.
  3. Tool and date: identify the agent, model, mode and version. AI capabilities change quickly; a result from early 2025 is not a measurement of a 2026 tool.
  4. Time components: measure implementation, context search, prompting, debugging, review, rework and merge time separately. Report completion time independently from task counts.
  5. Functional outcomes: run existing tests and add tests for the change. Track escaped defects, flaky tests, security findings and rollback or incident work.
  6. Change quality: collect blind or structured ratings for readability, maintainability, reliability and unnecessary complexity, alongside diff size and review comments.
  7. Delivery outcomes: monitor batch size, lead time, deployment frequency, failed changes and recovery time. These show whether local productivity improves the system’s delivery performance.
  8. Understanding: ask the author to explain the design, failure modes and tests. For learning tasks, use a delayed quiz or a new but related problem rather than treating immediate completion as mastery.

Use matched tasks or random assignment where possible, and report uncertainty instead of presenting a single percentage as a universal effect. A small pilot with real repository work is more informative for your team than importing a result from a fictional exercise.

A safer operating pattern for coding agents

Start with a narrow change

Give the agent one issue with explicit acceptance criteria and a clear file boundary. Small batches limit review surface and make it easier to revert a flawed suggestion. If the request expands, split it into a second change rather than letting the first diff grow invisibly.

Make the agent inspect before it edits

Require a brief plan that identifies relevant modules, interfaces, tests and assumptions. Have it quote the existing conventions it will follow, then approve the plan before code generation. This shifts effort toward repository context—the part a fluent code completion cannot infer reliably.

Generate tests with adversarial cases

Ask for tests covering invalid input, authorization, retries, timeouts, concurrency and backward compatibility where those risks apply. Review the tests themselves: an agent can produce a test that merely confirms its own implementation. Run the full existing suite, static analysis and security checks, not only newly generated tests.

Keep a human accountable for the diff

The author should be able to explain each changed branch and remove code that is not needed. A reviewer should inspect behavior, failure handling and interfaces rather than approving because the tests are green. For sensitive changes, require a second reviewer who did not write the prompt.

Track downstream effects

After merging, compare defect reports, rollback frequency, review time and follow-up edits with a baseline. If generated changes are consistently larger or require more rework, reduce the agent’s scope or change the approval gate. If a task category shows a genuine speed and quality improvement, expand only to similar tasks.

Common mistakes when interpreting “more productive”

  • Counting lines as value: verbose generated code can increase the numerator while increasing maintenance burden.
  • Equating green tests with quality: tests represent selected behaviors and may miss operational or security failures.
  • Generalizing a vendor experiment: a Copilot result on a fictional API does not predict an autonomous agent modifying your production monorepo.
  • Ignoring task familiarity: experienced maintainers may spend more time supervising an agent in a complex codebase, while newer developers may benefit more on routine tasks.
  • Mixing individual and organizational metrics: a developer’s faster draft and a company’s delivery stability are different levels of measurement.
  • Treating correlation as causation: DORA’s adoption figures identify an association; they do not prove that AI caused the decline.
  • Optimizing for visible output: more commits or smaller commits may reflect iteration, but without defect and review data they do not establish improvement.

What the evidence supports

AI coding agents are best understood as probabilistic drafting and analysis tools, not autonomous quality guarantees. Microsoft Research found more completed tasks in three field experiments, while METR found longer completion times for experienced maintainers handling real issues with early-2025 tools. GitHub’s controlled exercise found stronger test and review outcomes for Copilot on its narrowly defined API task. DORA’s organizational associations and Anthropic’s learning results show why local output should be checked against delivery health and human understanding.

For a team deciding whether to adopt an agent, the practical test is not “Did we generate more lines?” It is “For this class of change, did we reduce end-to-end time while preserving or improving tested behavior, reviewability, maintainability, delivery stability and developer understanding?” Only a measurement plan that tracks all of those outcomes can tell you whether more generated code is actually better software.
