Why AI Can Impress You One Moment and Miss an Easy Task the Next

Because fluent answers and reliable performance are not the same thing. An AI language model generates text from patterns learned during training; it does not automatically verify every fact or operation it presents. A task that resembles familiar examples may suit those patterns, while an exact count, rare fact, or changed instruction can expose their limits. Whether the system guesses, admits uncertainty, or uses a tool also affects the answer you see.

Why can an AI do a hard-looking task but miss an easy one?

People judge difficulty differently from language models. A model’s training teaches it to predict likely text from examples, not to attach a truth label to every sentence. Common language patterns can be learned well, but a rare detail may not be inferable from those patterns. OpenAI illustrates the distinction with an arbitrary fact such as a pet’s birthday: without relevant information, a plausible answer is not a reliable one. OpenAI’s explanation of language-model hallucinations describes this gap between prediction and verified knowledge.

That is why polished summaries and familiar question formats can coexist with mistakes in exact operations. The UNDP’s 2025 Human Development Report names counting words and reversing a list as examples of apparently simple tasks that generative AI may struggle with. These are examples of possible failure points, not proof that every current model will fail them.

Why does AI sometimes guess instead of saying it does not know?

A system’s behavior depends not only on what it can answer but also on whether it tends to answer, abstain, or use available tools. OpenAI argues that accuracy-focused scoreboards can reward guessing without adequately accounting for whether a model should hold back. Its 2025 SimpleQA comparison shows how similar accuracy can conceal very different outcomes:

Model in OpenAI’s comparison Accuracy Abstention Error
gpt-5-thinking-mini 22% 52% 26%
o4-mini 24% 1% 75%

These figures are results for those two models on that specific SimpleQA evaluation, not general error rates for chatbots. They show why accuracy alone can be misleading: a model that answers more often may also make many more errors. See OpenAI’s discussion of guessing and hallucinations and the SimpleQA evaluation.

Can an AI’s explanation prove that its reasoning is correct?

No. A step-by-step explanation can be useful to read, but it should not be treated as independent proof that the answer was reached correctly. Anthropic’s 2023 study found that faithfulness of written reasoning traces varied across the tasks it examined and was lower for larger models on most of those tasks. The finding does not mean every explanation is false; it means the explanation may not faithfully describe the process behind the answer. Anthropic’s chain-of-thought faithfulness study reports that models varied in how strongly they relied on the displayed reasoning when producing an answer.

Models can also struggle to spot errors in reasoning. In Google Research’s BIG-Bench Mistake evaluation, the best tested model reached 52.9% overall accuracy at identifying mistakes in reasoning traces; researchers also found difficulty with simple, unambiguous mistakes in that setup. This score applies to that particular evaluation, not to self-checking in every task or model. Google Research’s BIG-Bench Mistake report explains the test.

Why do benchmark scores not predict every real-world answer?

A benchmark measures performance under particular conditions. The model and version, exact task, prompt, scoring method, date, and access to browsing, code, or other tools can all change what a result means. OpenAI’s joint evaluation write-up describes tests conducted with tools off and warns that they covered a narrow set of prompts and attributes. That makes them evidence about those conditions, not a complete measure of ordinary use. OpenAI’s evaluation write-up discusses those limits.

When you see an AI score or claim, check whether it reports accuracy, errors, or abstentions; whether external tools were available; and whether the test resembles the task you care about. A high score on one narrow test does not establish dependable performance on a different task.

How can you check an AI answer?

  • For factual claims: ask for sources, then open them and confirm they support the claim. Confident wording is a style, not a confidence measurement.
  • For exact arithmetic, counts, or transformations: use a calculator, spreadsheet, or short program when precision matters, then check the output.
  • For questions with a small fixed set of possible answers: comparing several independently generated answers can help in some settings. OpenAI’s reliability cookbook reports gains from self-consistency on selected math and reasoning benchmarks, but repeated generation costs more and is not well suited to open-ended writing. OpenAI’s consistency-check example describes the approach.
  • For tasks tied to specific information: provide the relevant document, date, assumptions, or data, and state the required output format. Check the result against that material or an appropriate source; no prompt formula guarantees correctness.
  • For consequential decisions: consult authoritative evidence or a qualified person rather than relying on a longer explanation or an AI’s own self-check.
