Why Advertised Drive Capacity Differs From the Space Shown by Your Computer

A drive sold as 1 TB contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer may display those same bytes in binary-sized units, where 1 GiB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes. Dividing the drive’s byte count by that larger unit produces about 931.3 GiB, often shown by an interface as “931 GB.” The bytes have not disappeared. Formatting, system data, partitions, and device-specific overhead can reduce the usable space further, but those are separate from the basic decimal-versus-binary conversion.

The two capacity systems behind the apparent shortfall

Drive manufacturers normally describe capacity with decimal prefixes. In that system, each step is a multiple of 1,000. Operating systems and storage utilities may instead calculate with binary multiples, in which each step is 1,024. The International Electrotechnical Commission gives binary units the names GiB and TiB, although some interfaces continue to print the familiar GB or TB labels.

Unit Bytes How it is used
1 GB 1,000,000,000 Decimal capacity commonly used on packaging
1 TB 1,000,000,000,000 Decimal capacity commonly used on packaging
1 GiB 1,073,741,824 Binary-sized unit
1 TiB 1,099,511,627,776 Binary-sized unit

These definitions are documented by Seagate’s storage-capacity guide and Apple’s explanation of storage measurement. A decimal terabyte is therefore smaller than a binary tebibyte. When a program divides a manufacturer’s decimal byte count by binary units, the displayed number is lower even though the underlying byte count is unchanged.

The unit names matter because “GB” is not always used consistently on screen. A display that says 931 GB may actually be counting 1,073,741,824-byte GiB units while retaining the older label. Another program may use decimal gigabytes and show a number closer to 1,000 GB. Do not compare the printed suffix alone; identify the multiplier or compare exact bytes.

Why a 1 TB drive commonly appears as about 931 GB

Start with the advertised byte count, not the rounded label:

  1. The label “1 TB” represents 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
  2. For a binary-gibibyte display, divide by 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB.
  3. The result is approximately 931.3 GiB.
  4. An interface that calls binary units “GB” may round that result to about 931 GB.

The same decimal terabyte is approximately 0.9095 TiB when divided by 1,099,511,627,776 bytes per TiB. Both figures describe the same physical storage; they use different-sized units. Seagate uses the roughly 931 GB example to illustrate this convention.

That apparent difference is about 68.7 GiB when the two numbers are expressed in the same binary unit. It is not a missing block of the drive and it is not, by itself, evidence of a faulty disk. The percentage can look larger on smaller devices because people tend to compare rounded labels, but the underlying rule is the same: divide decimal bytes by the chosen unit size.

Do not treat 931 as a guaranteed display on every computer. Some operating systems and applications use decimal units, some use binary calculations with legacy GB/TB labels, and reporting conventions have changed across operating-system generations. The reliable comparison is the number of bytes reported by the system, where that value is available.

Why usable space is lower after formatting

Capacity conversion explains the familiar seven-to-ten-percent-looking difference between decimal and binary labels. A second reduction occurs when the device is formatted and prepared for use. File-system structures, partition metadata, allocation tables, boot information, recovery data, and operating-system files occupy part of the raw byte pool. Apple summarizes this distinction by noting that “actual formatted capacity” uses some of the device’s storage and that the operating system consumes additional space; see Apple Support’s storage-capacity article, published May 21, 2024.

Available space is therefore not the same measurement as either the package capacity or a newly created volume’s total capacity. The amount depends on the file system, partition arrangement, device firmware, and the computer’s own system files. A capacity figure shown for a volume can be lower than the disk’s total capacity because other partitions or reserved areas exist on the same device.

For example, a disk can have one main data volume, a recovery partition, and a small system partition. The file browser reports free space only for the mounted data volume; it does not imply that the other portions vanished. Likewise, a disk can have unallocated space that belongs to no volume. Disk-management tools show that space even though ordinary file-save dialogs do not.

One vendor, SanDisk, says that some drives can provide up to 4% less usable capacity because space is reserved for firmware, boot structures, address tables, and backup areas used to manage flash errors. That is a qualified statement about some products and internal designs, not a universal formatting percentage. It should not be added automatically to every drive’s expected difference. The vendor’s 128 GB example still has a total of 128,000,000,000 bytes before these other uses are considered; details are in SanDisk Support’s capacity troubleshooting guide.

Formatting also does not change the manufacturer’s decimal byte count. It creates structures that organize those bytes and may reserve some of them. Reformatting can change the amount available to a file system, but it cannot make a binary-sized report equal the decimal number printed on the box.

Use bytes to decide whether the result is normal

Rounded labels can hide the unit convention. When a computer exposes an exact byte count, compare that number with the decimal value on the package or specification. Then separate the disk’s total capacity from the space available in a particular volume.

  1. Record the advertised decimal bytes. For a 1 TB device, use 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. For the SanDisk 128 GB example, use 128,000,000,000 bytes.
  2. Find the computer’s exact total. Open the operating system’s disk or partition utility and inspect the physical disk, not only the free-space number for one volume. Menu names differ by operating-system version.
  3. Convert using the displayed unit. Divide decimal bytes by 1,073,741,824 for GiB or by 1,099,511,627,776 for TiB. If the interface uses decimal units, compare decimal bytes instead.
  4. Check the partition map. Look for allocated volumes, recovery or system partitions, and unallocated space that has not been assigned to a volume.
  5. Check what the host can see. An enclosure, adapter, firmware setting, or older host may expose only part of the device or fail to recognize a partition.
  6. Review health and error information. A materially low byte count combined with read errors, disappearing volumes, or corruption needs investigation beyond unit conversion.

Use the physical-disk entry for this comparison, rather than a folder’s properties or a single drive letter. A folder reports files and free space within one mounted volume. The physical-disk view can reveal whether the rest is in another partition or is unallocated. If the utility gives both decimal and binary columns, note which one you are reading before drawing a conclusion.

Worked examples with real byte counts

Advertised label Decimal bytes Approximate binary display What the number means
1 TB 1,000,000,000,000 931.3 GiB, often labeled about 931 GB The same bytes expressed in 1,073,741,824-byte units
128 GB 128,000,000,000 119.2 GiB The same bytes expressed in binary gibibytes

The 128 GB conversion is arithmetic from the stated byte definitions: 128,000,000,000 divided by 1,073,741,824 is about 119.2. Neither example includes the additional reduction caused by a particular file system, operating-system files, hidden partitions, or data already stored on the volume.

If a new 128 GB device appears near 119 GiB before you copy anything, that is the same kind of unit conversion as the 1 TB example. If its physical byte count is substantially below 128,000,000,000, or if the disk utility shows a large missing region, move on to configuration and health checks rather than assuming the unit difference explains everything.

When a larger discrepancy needs troubleshooting

A result close to the expected conversion is normally a display convention, not evidence that the drive is defective. Investigate when the exact byte count is materially below the advertised decimal count, when the physical disk is detected at the wrong size, or when a volume does not account for all of the disk.

1. Inspect unallocated and hidden space

Use the operating system’s disk-management or partition utility to view the entire physical disk. A partition may be present but lack a drive letter or mount point, or capacity may be unallocated after a repartitioning operation. Do not judge the disk from a single volume’s free-space figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify that the host sees every partition

If the disk is inside an enclosure or connected through an adapter, the host may expose only a portion of the layout. Check the disk on the intended computer and, when practical, on another compatible host. Differences between hosts point toward visibility or compatibility rather than decimal-versus-binary arithmetic.

3. Check for file-system and device errors

Use the platform’s built-in error-checking and drive-health information. Corruption can make a volume unavailable even though the physical bytes remain present. Repeated read errors, a volume that vanishes, or a capacity that changes between scans deserves priority attention and a backup before repair attempts.

4. Account for ordinary file usage

Recycle-bin contents, temporary files, system-reserved data, and files in another user account can consume space while being easy to overlook. SanDisk specifically lists emptying the recycle bin among its checks for an apparent capacity mismatch. Freeing those files affects available space; it does not change the disk’s advertised total.

5. Compare the result on another connection only when safe

Testing a suspect disk through another compatible port or host can distinguish a visibility problem from a device problem. It should complement, not replace, a backup and a review of the partition map. If the same physical byte count appears everywhere and is close to the decimal label, the difference is almost certainly a unit convention or normal reserved space.

Back up before erasing or reformatting

Erasing and formatting destroy the data on the affected volume. SanDisk’s troubleshooting instructions place backup before those operations and warn that all data will be lost. Copy important files to another verified location before changing partitions or creating a new file system.

Do not reformat merely because a 1 TB drive displays about 931 GB. Reformatting cannot turn binary units into decimal units and is unnecessary when the exact byte count matches the advertised capacity. Consider an erase or reformat only after the partition, host, and health checks indicate a genuine configuration problem and you have confirmed that the data is backed up.

How to interpret the final numbers

There are three different measurements to keep separate:

  • Advertised capacity: the manufacturer’s decimal byte count, such as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes for 1 TB.
  • Reported total capacity: the physical disk size calculated and labeled by the computer, possibly using binary-sized units.
  • Available space: what remains in a particular formatted volume after file-system structures, operating-system data, reserved areas, and your files are accounted for.

If the first and second measurements agree in bytes, the familiar lower GB/TB number is expected. If the second is close but the third is lower, inspect formatting and usage. If the physical byte count itself is substantially short, examine partitions, host visibility, errors, and drive health before considering destructive repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision rule

First convert the package’s decimal bytes into the unit shown by the computer. If the result is close—for example, about 931 GiB for a 1 TB label—stop treating the display as a defect. Next compare the physical disk with the mounted volume. A smaller volume total can be explained by partitions or reserved areas, while a smaller free-space figure can simply reflect files, recycle-bin contents, and system data. Only a materially low physical byte count, missing partition space, or accompanying errors calls for deeper troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1 TB drive that shows 931 GB defective?

Usually not. A 1 TB label means 1,000,000,000,000 decimal bytes. Dividing by 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB gives about 931.3 GiB, which some interfaces label as 931 GB. Check the exact byte count before diagnosing a fault.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

A decimal GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A binary GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. A computer can display GiB values while using the older GB label, so the suffix alone does not identify the calculation.

Why is available space lower than the disk’s reported total?

Formatting creates file-system structures and may reserve space for partition metadata, boot or recovery information, and operating-system data. Your files, temporary data, and recycle-bin contents reduce available space further.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does formatting recover the missing capacity?

Formatting cannot reverse decimal-to-binary conversion. It may change file-system overhead or recreate a partition, but it erases data and should never be attempted without a verified backup.

What should I check if the disk is much smaller than expected?

Compare exact byte counts, inspect the entire physical disk in a partition utility, look for unallocated or hidden partitions, verify that the host and enclosure see the full layout, and review error or drive-health information.

Can a 128 GB drive really show about 119 GiB?

Yes. SanDisk’s example defines 128 GB as 128,000,000,000 bytes. Dividing that by 1,073,741,824 gives about 119.2 GiB, before file-system and device-specific overhead.

The Bottom Line

A drive label normally uses decimal bytes, while a computer may show binary-sized units. That is why 1 TB commonly appears as about 931 GB. Compare exact bytes, then account separately for formatting, partitions, system files, and ordinary usage. Investigate only a shortfall beyond the expected conversion, and back up before any destructive repair.
