The in-game Dictionary does something different—it looks up a definition and does not establish that a word can be played.
Why Words With Friends may reject a word
The word is in an excluded category
Zynga’s English rules exclude proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes or suffixes played by themselves, and words that require a hyphen or apostrophe. A term can be familiar or appear in another reference and still fall outside the game’s rules. Zynga’s Words With Friends Rule book sets out these exclusions.

The game’s word list differs from another dictionary or checker
Zynga says the game has more than 173,000 acceptable English words. It names the Oxford English Dictionary as a source for words and definitions, while noting that Zynga has also added words of its own. That means a listing in a general dictionary—or approval by a third-party word checker—is not decisive evidence that the game will accept a play.
The selected language does not match the reference
Words With Friends uses different word-list sources and rules across languages, including English and British English. An external checker for a different language, edition, or game may therefore disagree with the selected version in the app.

A tile creates another invalid word
A placement can form more than the intended main word. If the new tile joins neighboring letters to create an invalid cross-word, the game can block the play even when the main word itself is valid. Check every word made by the placement, including short words.
The rejection may be specific to the app or play
The general rules do not identify the cause of every individual rejection. The exact word, selected language, app version, and board layout can all matter when diagnosing a particular play.

How to check a rejected word in the game
- Form the play and use Word Strength. In Words With Friends 2, Zynga describes Word Strength as the feature for checking whether the formed word is valid. Use it as the in-game validity check.
- Use Dictionary only for a definition. If you want to understand an unfamiliar English word, look it up with the in-game Dictionary. Zynga describes Dictionary as a definition tool, currently for English; a definition result is not proof that the word is playable.
- Inspect every word the placement creates. Read across and down from the new tile or tiles. A short cross-word can be the reason the full placement is rejected.
- Confirm the game language. Check the selected language in the game, then use that game’s own Word Strength check rather than relying only on a checker using a different list.
- Contact Zynga if the result remains unexplained. Provide the exact word, selected language, app version, and board placement so support can assess the specific case. Zynga’s Words With Friends game page directs players to its Help Center.
How to interpret a disagreement with an outside checker
Compare three things before treating an external result as a contradiction: which game or word list the checker uses, which language is selected, and whether it checks playability or merely supplies a definition. Word Strength is Zynga’s documented in-game validity check; an outside dictionary or solver may answer a different question.
