Then check for a full recovery tank or activated float, confirm the filter is configured for wet pickup according to the exact model’s manual, and inspect the hose, inlet, wand and nozzle for blockages or loose connections. A squeegee-equipped floor machine has additional recovery-blade checks that do not apply to every shop-style vacuum.
Start with safety and the tank
Turn the vacuum off and unplug it before opening the tank or inspecting parts. Empty the recovery tank if it is full. Many wet-dry vacuums stop drawing air when the float rises to shut off suction as the tank reaches capacity. A change in motor sound or sudden loss of suction can be a clue that the shutoff has activated.

The Victor WD30 and WD60 manual says the float cuts off airflow at capacity and does not return until the vacuum is switched off and emptied. Other models can differ, so consult the manual for your machine. Victor WD30/WD60 manual; RIDGID wet/dry vac troubleshooting.
Check the float and wet-pickup filter setup
Make sure the float moves freely
With the machine unplugged, inspect the float for dirt or an obstruction. It should move freely rather than remain stuck in the shutoff position. Do not force or bypass the float; it is part of the vacuum’s protection against liquid entering the motor area. If it is damaged or will not move as intended, follow the manufacturer’s repair guidance.

Follow the filter instructions for your exact model
There is no universal wet-pickup filter arrangement. BISSELL’s instructions for Model 2035 say to use both the fabric and mesh filters for wet and dry cleaning, and to let both filters dry completely after washing before reinstalling them. By contrast, the Victor WD30/WD60 manual says to remove the cloth filter for wet pickup. Kärcher advises letting its cartridge filter dry if water is in the filter after suction stops during wet cleaning. These instructions apply to different products; use the manual for your make and model, and do not operate the vacuum with a filter configuration that conflicts with it.
A clogged or wet filter may reduce suction or need cleaning and complete drying, depending on the model. BISSELL Model 2035 support; Kärcher FAQs.

Clear the suction path and check the seals
Inspect the inlet, hose, wand and nozzle
With the vacuum unplugged, detach the hose and accessories and check each section, including the tank inlet, for debris or a blockage. Clear obstructions carefully; avoid pushing sharp objects through a hose, since they can puncture it. Reassemble the parts securely. BISSELL recommends separating components to clear blockages, and RIDGID includes hose inspection among its poor-suction checks. BISSELL support; RIDGID troubleshooting.

Check that the hose is fully connected and the powerhead or lid is seated correctly. Tighten the tank drain cap if the model has one. Inspect the hose and seals for damage; replace a torn hose or a defective seal with a compatible part specified for the model. A mis-seated assembly or air leak can weaken suction even when the motor runs.

If the machine uses a squeegee, inspect its recovery system
This section applies to scrubber-style or other squeegee-equipped floor machines, not to every canister or shop-style wet-dry vacuum. Water left in a trail or film can result from a blocked recovery passage, debris beneath the squeegee blade, worn blade edges or incorrect blade adjustment.
- Check the recovery hose and squeegee neck for blockages.
- Clean debris from beneath the blade and inspect its edges for wear.
- Use the machine’s manual for blade adjustment or replacement.

Match the checks to the kind of machine

When to stop troubleshooting
If suction remains poor after the tank, float, filter setup, air path and connections have been checked, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Do the same if the turbine or motor appears faulty. If an older vacuum gives off a burning or electrical smell, switch it off and unplug it immediately; do not continue testing it.
