Installation is expected in December 2026, and students are scheduled to begin hands-on work in spring 2027. The goal is not a display piece: students will program the machine, run experiments, analyze results and compare quantum methods with conventional computers.
What Skyview High School is getting
Skyview is a new public high school in Fairfax County. The school board approved a partnership involving Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Connected DMV and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to place a working quantum system at the school.

FCPS describes the equipment as a 4-qubit, gate-based quantum computer. That means it uses physical qubits and quantum gates—the operations that create and manipulate quantum states—rather than offering students only a software simulator. Officials have not publicly released the final hardware model number or procurement price.

Why a high school needs a quantum computer
The central reason is hands-on instruction. Students can learn quantum concepts in a classroom, but operating hardware exposes details that a simulator can hide: measurement noise, limited qubit counts, imperfect gates and the gap between an ideal algorithm and an experimental result.

FCPS says students will write programs, conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and examine where quantum computing currently falls short. They will also compare quantum approaches with classical computing, helping them judge when a quantum method is useful and when an ordinary computer remains the better tool.

What students are expected to do with it
One stated example is a scheduling problem: finding an efficient way to organize a timetable. Students could formulate the problem, encode it for a quantum processor, run multiple trials, inspect the output and compare those results with a classical solution. The educational value is in the full cycle—from defining a problem to interpreting imperfect data—not in claiming that a 4-qubit machine can outperform modern computers on large scheduling tasks.
Projects are also expected to introduce students to quantum programming concepts, including how gates transform qubits and how repeated measurements produce statistical results. Because the system has only four qubits, exercises will necessarily be small. That constraint makes it possible to see the entire experiment and discuss why larger, fault-tolerant machines are much harder to build.

According to the school-board recap, Skyview is slated to receive an operational, gate-based system. The announcement identifies four physical qubits, so this is intended to be a real machine that students can access directly, not merely a simulator running on a conventional computer.
A 4-qubit device is an educational platform, not a general-purpose replacement for classical computing. It cannot represent the scale, error correction or performance associated with proposed large quantum systems. Its purpose is to let students observe the technology’s underlying operations and limitations firsthand.

How the program could expand
FCPS says the initial pathway may develop into a credit-bearing course. Future versions could include dual-enrollment opportunities, allowing eligible students to earn high-school and college credit, and industry-recognized credentials. Those additions are planned possibilities rather than guarantees for the first student cohort.
A regional hub rather than a single classroom
Skyview is also intended to serve as a regional hub. FCPS describes potential connections with universities, researchers, federal laboratories and other school systems. If those partnerships are established, students beyond Skyview could gain access to workshops, collaborative projects or shared learning opportunities. The scope and schedule of that wider access have not yet been published.
The workforce and economic-development case
The project is tied to Northern Virginia’s technology economy. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority is expected to connect the school effort with local businesses and technology organizations so students can see possible careers and real-world applications.
A 2026 Fairfax County Public Schools School Board recap stated that more than 1,100 quantum-related jobs were open across Northern Virginia. That number is a contemporaneous board-recap statement, not a separately audited labor-market study, so it should be read as the partners’ estimate of regional demand rather than a definitive jobs census.
The economic-development argument is straightforward: companies building or applying quantum technology need people who understand the field. Giving teenagers experience with hardware, programming and experimental analysis can make that talent pipeline start before college. As Fairfax County Economic Development Authority President and CEO George D. Thomas put it, “Regions that lead in quantum will be the ones that build the talent first.”

How this fits Virginia’s wider computer-science push
Virginia’s Department of Education says its 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning must be fully implemented during the 2026–27 school year. Skyview’s planned launch falls in that same academic period, placing the quantum pathway within a broader effort to strengthen computing education statewide.

The quantum machine does not replace foundational computer science. Students still need programming, algebra, probability and data-analysis skills to use it effectively. Instead, the system gives those subjects an unusual application and lets students connect classroom theory to an emerging research and industry field.

Why the announcement matters
Skyview’s project makes quantum computing tangible for public-school students at a time when the technology is still difficult to access. The machine will be small, and it will not solve large commercial problems. Its significance is educational: students can learn what a quantum processor actually does, test an idea against measured data and understand both the promise and the engineering obstacles.
FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid summarized the rationale this way: “Our responsibility is to prepare our students for their future and not our past.” For Skyview students, that preparation is scheduled to begin with four qubits in spring 2027.
