Leaving a browser tab is not the same as stopping the media in that tab. A site can keep its audio playing while you view another tab, and Android may place the video in a small floating Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window. If you see a floating rectangle, close that PiP window. If you hear sound without a visible video, pause the player from the browser tab or the media controls shown by Android. The exact buttons depend on your browser, Android version, phone maker, website and video player.
What is actually happening?
There are three different events that users often describe as “leaving a tab”: switching to another browser tab, leaving the browser app with Home or the app switcher, and locking the screen. Each can produce a different result. A browser may preserve media playback when you move between tabs, while Android’s multi-window system may keep the video visible above another app. A site may also continue audio in the background without displaying any video at all.

Chrome Help explains the general principle: media can continue when you move to a different tab, and the browser provides media controls for pausing it. The detailed instructions in that help material are written for computer Chrome, so Android menus and labels should not be assumed to match them exactly.

How the symptom identifies the mode
| What you notice | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| A small video remains over another app or the home screen | Picture-in-Picture | Tap the floating video to reveal its controls, then use its close button. You can also drag it away if your device offers that gesture. |
| Only sound continues and no floating window is visible | Background media playback | Return to the browser tab and press pause, or use the playback notification or media control available on your phone. |
| Playback resumes whenever you change tabs | The site’s player and browser are keeping the media session active | Pause before changing tabs, then check whether the player has its own autoplay or background-play option. |
| Playback changes after pressing Home, opening another app or locking the screen | Browser, site and Android lifecycle behavior | Record which action triggered it; the fix depends on whether the result is PiP, audio-only playback or a paused player. |
Why switching tabs does not automatically pause a video
Browsers treat a tab switch as a navigation change, not necessarily as a command to stop every media element. A player can remain loaded and retain audio focus while its tab is in the background. This is useful when someone intentionally listens to a lecture, music stream or long-form video while reading elsewhere, but it can be surprising when the desired action was “stop.”
The browser does not know whether you intended to keep listening. It therefore leaves the decision to the player, the site’s implementation and available media controls. Some players pause when they lose visibility; others continue audio; still others hand the video to PiP. There is no single Android switch established by the official documentation that disables every website’s background media behavior.
Why a floating video appears: Picture-in-Picture
PiP keeps a video visible in a small, movable window while you browse another page or app. The browser or app must support PiP and the player must request or permit it. On a supported device, tapping the floating window normally exposes play, pause, expand and close controls. Closing that window ends the visible PiP presentation, but it does not automatically guarantee that every service will stop audio.
PiP behavior also varies by service. A website can use its own player rules, while a dedicated app can implement Android’s PiP APIs directly. A phone maker may change the control layout, gestures or permission wording. For that reason, instructions that name one universal Android menu path would be misleading without knowing the phone and software versions.

Browser-initiated automatic PiP is a separate feature
Chrome’s developer documentation dated March 18, 2026 describes automatic PiP initiated by the browser in Chrome 142. In that documented desktop scenario, Chrome can place eligible media in PiP when the user switches tabs. The media must be in the top frame, have been recently audible, be playing and hold audio focus. The authors describe the purpose this way: “This ensures that media content remains visible when you switch tabs.” Read that statement as a description of browser-initiated automatic PiP, not as a promise that every Android Chrome installation behaves the same way.
The documentation’s activation and testing instructions target desktop Chrome. Do not treat its version number, flags or menu directions as an Android troubleshooting procedure. Android Chrome, another browser, a particular site and a phone manufacturer may expose different behavior.

Identify the exact trigger before changing settings
Reproduce the issue once and note the action immediately before playback continued. This prevents treating a PiP problem as an audio-background problem.

- Start a video in the browser and confirm that it is playing with sound.
- Switch to another tab without leaving the browser. Note whether the video remains audible, becomes a floating window or pauses.
- Press Home or open another app. Note whether the result changes.
- Lock the screen, if that is part of your normal use, and note whether audio continues or stops.
- Repeat with the same site in a private tab only if you need to determine whether an extension, cookie or site setting is involved. Do not assume private browsing changes Android’s media policy.
- Write down the browser name and version, Android version, phone model, website and whether a floating window appeared. Those details are needed for reliable, menu-specific support.
How to stop the video immediately
If a floating PiP window is visible
- Tap the floating video once to reveal its controls.
- Tap the close control to dismiss the PiP window. If your device offers a close target at the edge of the screen, drag the window there.
- If audio still plays after the window disappears, use the pause control in the PiP controls or continue with the audio-only procedure below.
Closing PiP addresses the visible window. It is not proof that the underlying media session has been terminated, because some services distinguish dismissing PiP from stopping playback.
If only audio continues
- Return to the browser from the recent-apps view or notification that identifies the media.
- Open the tab containing the player and press its pause button.
- If returning to the tab is inconvenient, pull down Android’s notification shade and use the media card’s pause control, when one is provided.
- After pausing, switch tabs again to verify that the sound has stopped.
Control names and notification layouts vary. If no media card appears, the player may not expose Android media-session controls; use the player in its tab instead.
If playback restarts by itself
Check the video player for an autoplay, continuous-play or background-play option and disable it when present. These controls belong to the site or service, so they may be labeled differently or may not exist. Also check whether the browser restored the previous session after a crash or restart; reopening a tab is not the same as intentionally pressing play.
YouTube requires a service-specific distinction
YouTube’s mobile help distinguishes PiP from background playback. In the case described by YouTube Help, background playback after dismissing the mobile PiP player is available to Premium members. That condition applies to YouTube’s service rules and should not be generalized to unrelated websites or browser players.

For a YouTube video, first determine whether the small window is still present. Close or control PiP if it is visible. If the window has been dismissed but sound continues, use YouTube’s player or Android’s media notification to pause, and check the account and subscription state if the behavior is tied to YouTube’s documented background-play feature.
Why there is no single “disable background video” switch
Playback is the result of several layers working together:
- The web page: JavaScript and the site’s player decide whether to pause when the page loses visibility.
- The browser: It may preserve a media session across tabs and may support PiP under particular eligibility rules.
- Android: The operating system manages PiP windows, audio focus and media notifications.
- The device maker: System gestures, notification controls and permission labels can differ.
- The service account: A subscription or service policy can permit background playback in one app but not another.
Changing a browser permission can therefore affect one layer while leaving the others unchanged. A setting that prevents PiP does not necessarily stop audio-only playback, and pausing a tab does not change a service’s account policy.
What to check when the problem repeats
Capture a reproducible description
Support is much more effective when the report says “audio continues after switching from tab A to tab B in browser version X on Android version Y” rather than simply “video plays in the background.” Include whether Home, the app switcher or screen lock was used, and whether a floating window appeared.

Test another player without changing several variables
Try a second website in the same browser, then the same site in another browser. Change one variable at a time. If only one site behaves differently, its player implementation is the strongest suspect. If every site behaves the same way, browser or Android media handling is more likely. This comparison does not prove a cause, but it narrows which layer to investigate.
Use updates as a compatibility check
Record the browser and Android versions before updating. A behavior change after an update can explain why an old set of instructions no longer matches the screen. Conversely, an old browser may lack a current player fix. Because official documentation does not establish one universal Android settings path, version information is more useful than a generic menu recipe.
Escalate with the right evidence
When contacting the browser, website or device maker, provide the site address, browser and version, Android version, device model, trigger action and a short screen recording if privacy permits. State whether pausing from the tab, PiP controls and the notification card each worked. Those results separate a player defect from an operating-system or browser issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the behavior you actually want
| Your goal | Practical approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop all sound when leaving the tab | Pause in the player before switching tabs, then verify with Android’s media controls. | Requires an extra action each time; no universal Android switch is established. |
| Keep watching while using another app | Allow PiP when the site, browser and Android device support it; use the floating controls. | The window remains on top and may be dismissed separately from playback. |
| Listen while reading another tab | Leave the media session running and control it from the player or notification card. | Audio can continue unexpectedly if you forget to pause. |
| Prevent one service from continuing | Use that service’s own autoplay, background-play or account controls when available. | Service rules do not automatically apply to other websites. |
Bottom line
A video that continues after you leave an Android browser tab is usually not “stuck”: the tab switch left the media session active, or Android/browser support moved the video into PiP. A visible floating window points to PiP; audio without a window points to background playback. Close or pause the appropriate control, then identify the browser, Android version, site and trigger action before looking for device-specific settings.
