Why a USB Drive Copies Files Slowly in Windows—and How to Fix It

A USB drive can copy files slowly because transfer time depends on both the connection and the workload: many small files can take longer than a few large ones, and a hub, adapter, cable, or incompatible port can limit how a device works. First compare similar transfers, then simplify the connection and test another port or PC. Replace the drive only if those checks point to it as the bottleneck.

Why USB file copies can take longer than expected

The files being copied matter

Elapsed time depends on the number and size of the files, not just the total amount of data. Microsoft notes that external-storage transfers may take time depending on both factors. A folder containing many small files is therefore not a fair speed comparison with a transfer of a few large files. Microsoft does not provide a universal duration or speed for a particular workload. The connection path may limit the device

A drive connected through a hub, dock, adapter, or cable may not be using the connection you expect. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance identifies device, port, and cable compatibility—and some hub or dock connections—as factors that can limit functionality. That guidance concerns USB-C functionality; it does not establish that every such setup causes slow flash-drive copying. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance

A USB version is not a write-speed promise

USB version labels describe an interface, not the sustained write rate of a particular flash drive. Microsoft’s legacy USB 2.0 support page gives 480 Mbps as USB 2.0’s high-speed maximum. That is a bus ceiling, not a predicted file-copy speed or a measured result for your drive. Microsoft’s USB 2.0 support page

How to troubleshoot a slow USB drive copy

  1. Identify the transfer and workload. Note whether files are going from the PC to the USB drive or from the drive to the PC. Record whether you are copying a few large files or many small ones, and compare like with like. This helps make the test useful; it does not diagnose the cause by itself.
  2. Simplify the connection. If you are using a hub, dock, adapter, or front-panel port, try a suitable port directly on the PC, if practical. Check that the port and any cable support the connection the device requires. Microsoft’s USB-C guidance supports checking compatibility, but it is not a guarantee that changing connections will improve copy speed. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance
  3. Compare another port and another PC. Repeat a comparable copy using another suitable port, then another PC if one is available. If the result changes, the original PC or connection path may be involved. If the same slowdown follows the drive across setups, the drive becomes a stronger suspect. These comparisons narrow down possibilities; they do not prove a specific fault.
  4. Check the destination and eject safely. Confirm that the copied files are present and usable. Before unplugging the drive, use Windows’ safely-remove or eject flow and wait until Windows indicates it is safe. Microsoft advises safely removing USB flash drives and external hard drives to avoid losing data. Microsoft’s instructions for safely removing hardware

When it makes sense to replace the drive

Consider a replacement only after comparable tests suggest that the flash drive itself is limiting performance. Compare capacity, an interface supported by both the drive and PC, and credible sustained write performance for the kind of files you transfer. Do not choose by USB version or advertised peak interface rate alone: neither tells you the particular drive’s sustained write speed. USB 2.0 flash storage may still be sufficient for occasional small transfers, according to Microsoft’s external-storage guidance. Microsoft’s file-transfer guidance

What not to change as a blanket speed fix

Avoid treating write-caching changes or reformatting as universal remedies. Microsoft’s write-caching article is legacy Windows 7-era guidance, not a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 instruction for fixing every slow USB copy. Reformatting can erase the drive, and the cited material does not establish one file system as the right speed fix for every user. Back up files before any action that could erase or alter them.
