If the third monitor connected to your USB-C dock stays blank, first check whether the laptop and dock can drive three independent displays at your chosen resolution and refresh rate. A USB-C plug—or a third video socket on the dock—does not guarantee that capability. Then check the video connection and Windows display settings before replacing anything.
Why the third monitor may be blank
There are three separate limits to check: the laptop’s graphics/display adapter, the dock’s model-specific display limit, and the USB-C video connection between them. Any one can prevent a third screen from working. The number of ports on the dock is not the same as the number of independent displays it can drive.

- The laptop may have reached its display limit. Microsoft notes that a computer’s display adapter may not support more than one external monitor, even when one external screen works. Check the exact laptop or GPU specifications for external-display count and supported resolutions.
- The dock may support fewer displays than its connectors suggest. Consult its official display matrix for the host connection type, simultaneous monitor count, resolution, and refresh rate. Some configurations may require lower resolution or refresh rates.
- The video path may not support the required mode. USB-C describes a connector, not a guarantee of video. The laptop port, dock, cable, and display must support the relevant DisplayPort Alternate Mode or USB4/Thunderbolt display path. Microsoft also cautions that some USB-C cables do not support every USB-C feature.
- The screen may be connected but not enabled. The monitor could be on the wrong input, or Windows may be set to show only one display rather than extend the desktop.
These limits are independent: a dock that supports three displays cannot overcome a laptop that supports only two, and a capable laptop cannot make an incompatible cable carry video.
Check the setup in this order
- Write down the exact equipment and target mode. Note the laptop and operating system, dock model, monitor models, target resolution and refresh rate, and which dock ports each screen uses. This information is needed to match the setup to the manufacturers’ compatibility and display tables.
- Look up the laptop’s external-display ceiling. Check the exact computer or GPU specifications for how many external displays it supports and at what resolutions. If the laptop cannot drive three independent external screens, a different dock alone will not solve the limit.
- Check the dock’s display matrix. Find the supported number of simultaneous displays for your laptop connection type, including the resolution and refresh rate supported across all screens. Do not infer three-screen support from three video connectors.
- Verify every link in the video path. Confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports the required DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt display path, and that the dock and cable support it too. If the cable or adapter is the limiting link, replace that specific item with one rated for the intended video mode.
- Check power, input, and connections. Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the dock. Reseat the monitor cable and any adapter, then reconnect the dock and displays. Restart if needed. Trying a known-good cable or another display can help isolate a fault, but does not establish that every replacement cable or display will be compatible.
- Ask Windows to detect the display. Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. If the monitor appears, select Extend these displays and arrange the screens to match their physical positions. A disabled display or a “show only” setting can look like a hardware failure.
When DisplayPort MST daisy-chaining applies
DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can pass video from one compatible display to another, but it is an option only when the host, dock, and monitors all support the arrangement. Connect the host to a monitor input, then connect that monitor’s DisplayPort output to the next display. Follow the monitor maker’s instructions to enable DisplayPort 1.2 or MST.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
MST does not bypass the laptop’s or dock’s total display capability or bandwidth. If the combined screen configuration exceeds either limit, a daisy chain will not make it work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to change if the checks identify a limit
- If the laptop is the limit: A replacement dock may not help. A USB-C-to-HDMI or DisplayPort adapter can provide another output only if the host can drive another independent display and the full connection path supports it.
- If the dock is the limit: Compare alternatives against the exact laptop compatibility, independent display count, simultaneous resolution and refresh rate, host connection type, and operating-system or driver requirements.
- If the cable or adapter is the limit: Replace that link with one rated for the required video mode. A generic cable or adapter is not automatically suitable just because its plugs fit.
- If you need three extended screens: Do not use a basic splitter as a fix. A splitter duplicates a signal; it does not create additional independent displays.
For context, Microsoft’s specifications for its Surface USB4 Dock list two external 4K monitors through its USB-C and HDMI outputs, or one 8K monitor over USB-C. Those figures describe that specific dock, not a general USB-C capability or a three-monitor recommendation. Check the support matrix for the exact dock and laptop combination before buying.
