A USB-C cable can charge a device without carrying video, and a USB-C port can lack video output altogether. Slow charging usually means the device, charger, or cable cannot provide the power the device needs. Diagnose charging and display problems separately: check each component’s specifications, secure both ends, and test a known-good compatible cable or charger.
Why USB-C charging and video behave differently
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that every port or cable supports the same power, data, or video features. For charging, the device, power adapter, and cable all need to support the power level the device requires. For a monitor, the computer port must output video, the cable or adapter must carry the necessary signal, and the monitor must accept it.

That is why a cable may charge a laptop but produce no picture, or why a monitor may work only at a lower resolution or refresh rate. Treat the cable, source port, charger, adapter, and display as parts of one connection path rather than assuming the USB-C plug alone determines compatibility.

- Check the device’s power requirement. Look up the recommended or required charger power for the exact laptop, tablet, or phone model. Requirements differ by device. Apple notes that a Mac may show a “Slow Charger” indication when the connected charger supplies too little wattage for that Mac (Apple’s Mac charging guidance).
- Check both the adapter and cable. Each must support the required power level. Microsoft likewise notes that faster USB-C charging depends on the charger and cable supporting the power levels the PC or phone needs (Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance).
- Try a known-good compatible combination. Connect a charger and charging-capable cable known to meet the device’s requirement, preferably directly to the device. Changing one component at a time can help identify whether the adapter or cable is limiting charging.
- Inspect the cable and connectors. Make sure the plugs fit securely and check for visible damage. If charging works only when you move or wiggle the cable, stop using it and have the cable and power supply evaluated; Apple advises against continuing to use a cable with that symptom (Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps).
If a USB-C monitor is blank or intermittent
- Verify video output from the exact computer port. Check the computer maker’s specifications for that specific port. Look for DisplayPort over USB-C or DisplayPort Alt Mode, or the required Thunderbolt support. The USB-C shape by itself does not establish that the port can drive a display. ASUS advises checking the video function of both the computer and monitor ports (ASUS USB-C troubleshooting guidance); DisplayPort’s FAQ explains how USB-C video support works (DisplayPort FAQ).
- Check the monitor input and any adapter. Confirm that the monitor accepts USB-C video, or that an adapter converts the computer’s supported signal to an input the monitor accepts. For USB-C-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-DisplayPort connections, check the adapter’s compatibility and supported display modes.
- Confirm the cable supports video. A cable sold for charging may not carry a display signal. Apple, for example, says its USB-C Charge Cable supports charging and USB 2.0 data but not video; its Thunderbolt 3 USB-C cable supports video (Apple’s USB-C and Thunderbolt cable specifications).
- Reseat the connection and bypass the dock. Secure both ends, then connect the display directly to the computer while diagnosing. Apple recommends a direct connection when troubleshooting an external display that is dark or running at a lower resolution or refresh rate (Apple’s external-display troubleshooting guidance).
- Check the requested resolution and refresh rate. If the display appears but offers limited settings, the cable or adapter may not support the mode you selected. Apple warns that an external display can be dark or use a lower resolution or refresh rate when the video cable or adapter does not support the display’s mode (Apple’s external-display troubleshooting guidance).
How to choose a replacement cable or adapter
Choose according to the capabilities your setup needs, not just the USB-C connector or a headline wattage. Check the specifications for the exact laptop port, monitor, charger, cable, and adapter.
#1 Best Overall
- Move Files Fast: Transfer music, movies, or entire seasons of TV shows in seconds at 40 Gbps.
- HD Display: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to mirror or extend your screen in up to 8K@60Hz or 4K@144Hz.
- Huge Range of Power: Supports a maximum 240W charge when paired up with a compatible charger. Charge virtually any USB-C device from phones and accessories to laptops.
- Built to Last: Proven in lab tests to withstand up to 5,000 bends.
- What You Get: Anker 515 USB-C to USB-C Cable (USB4, 3.3ft), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Charging: Select a cable and charger rated for at least the power level required by your device. USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1 enables up to 240W through a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector, but that standards capability does not mean every charger, cable, or computer supplies 240W; the connected devices must support the applicable level (USB-IF USB Power Delivery information).
- Video: Look for explicit support for the video protocol your computer provides, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or the required Thunderbolt version. Confirm that the cable or adapter supports the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Data and shared connections: If a dock or the same cable also connects USB peripherals, check its data-rate capability as well as video and charging support.
- Adapter compatibility: For a monitor with HDMI or DisplayPort rather than USB-C video input, use an adapter or cable that matches the computer’s output, the monitor’s input, and the desired display mode. DisplayPort describes USB-C docks and adapters that can carry display signals alongside USB data and charging power (DisplayPort FAQ).
USB-IF’s compliance guidance uses 60W or 240W power-capability markings on relevant USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories, with data-rate markings on applicable cable types (USB-IF cable marking guidance). These markings help identify specified power and data capabilities; they do not, by themselves, confirm video support. For a concrete example, Apple lists its Thunderbolt 3 USB-C cable as supporting DisplayPort HBR3 video, Thunderbolt 3 data transfer up to 40Gbps, USB 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10Gbps, and up to 100W charging. Apple contrasts it with its 2m USB-C Charge Cable, which is limited to USB 2.0 at 480Mbps and does not support video (Apple cable specifications). Those figures describe the cited Apple cables, not universal USB-C limits.

- Confirm the exact USB-C port supports video output rather than assuming all ports on the computer have identical capabilities.
- Test a known-good cable or adapter that supports the required power or video feature.
- Connect the monitor directly during diagnosis to remove a dock from the signal path.
- Compare the display mode you want with the specifications for the cable, adapter, monitor, and computer port.
- If a cable works only when moved, stop using it and arrange an evaluation rather than treating the loose connection as normal.
There is no single wattage or cable specification that solves both symptoms for every setup. The appropriate replacement depends on the device’s charging requirement and the video capabilities of the computer port, monitor, and connection path.
