A streaming service blocks a VPN when the connection makes your device or network appear to be somewhere other than its physical location, or when the service’s systems associate your IP address with VPN or proxy use. The same warning can also appear when a VPN is bundled with antivirus software, configured on a router, or when an ISP’s IP-location data is inaccurate.
Start by identifying the exact service message, checking whether your plan or programme supports VPN connections, and verifying the apparent country and IP address. Then disable every active VPN or proxy and retry. If the warning remains, reset the relevant network settings, check DNS and IP details with your ISP, and use the service’s own support path rather than trying to switch servers at random.

What a VPN block means
A VPN routes traffic through a different network endpoint. To a streaming service, that can make a home connection look as though it originates in another city or country. Netflix describes the effect directly: VPN apps or services can make a device or network look as if it is connecting from somewhere other than the viewer’s physical location, which can cause a VPN or proxy error. The service does not publish a complete list of the signals used to identify VPN traffic, so no single detection method should be assumed for every platform.

Location affects licensing. Netflix says that, while connected through a VPN, a viewer may see only programmes and films for which it has worldwide rights, such as Squid Games or Stranger Things. Turning the VPN off is the supported way to restore the catalogue licensed for the viewer’s region. A warning can therefore indicate a location mismatch rather than a fault in the streaming app itself.

An IP address can also be flagged incorrectly. Netflix’s partner guidance acknowledges inaccurate VPN or proxy flagging and tells network operators to keep their address-registration records accurate. That is an ISP or network-operator issue, not something a consumer can reliably repair by changing VPN servers.
Identify the exact warning before changing settings
Write down the service, the complete message or error code, the device, and whether the failure occurs with the VPN on, off, or both. A general playback or network error is not automatically a VPN block. Netflix’s documented VPN-related cases include the E106 and M7037-1111 messages; E121 applies specifically to an ad-supported experience connected through a VPN or proxy.

Check plan and programme restrictions
Before troubleshooting your router, check whether the attempted playback is one of the cases in which the service does not support VPN connections.
Netflix ad-supported experiences
Netflix states that VPNs are not supported on an ad-supported experience. If the account uses an ad-supported plan and displays E121 or a similar warning, turn off the VPN and restart the app or browser before changing other settings. The relevant Netflix explanation is in its E121 help article.
Netflix live events
Netflix also says VPNs are not supported for live events. A live event can therefore fail even when ordinary on-demand titles played successfully through the same connection. Disable the VPN for the event, then open the title again.

Regional catalogue requests
If your goal is to watch the catalogue licensed for your current country, a VPN is the wrong configuration. Netflix’s VPN viewing guidance says that a VPN may limit you to titles with worldwide licensing. The supported route to local availability is to disconnect it and retry from the local network.

Many people who see this warning did not deliberately open a VPN app. Check every layer that can route traffic, not just the application you use to watch video.
- Inspect the VPN app. Open the VPN application on the affected phone, tablet, computer, or streaming device and disconnect it. Some apps reconnect automatically at startup; disable auto-connect temporarily while testing.
- Check security software. Some antivirus products include a VPN component. Look in the product’s network, privacy, or VPN settings and turn off its VPN separately from real-time malware protection.
- Review device network settings. Remove or disable VPN profiles, manual proxies, and private-routing configurations that you no longer use. On a computer, inspect both the operating-system VPN list and the browser’s proxy settings.
- Check the router. A VPN configured on the home router affects every connected device, even when no VPN app is installed on the television or phone. Sign in to the router’s administration page and look for VPN client, tunnel, gateway, or proxy settings. Record existing settings before changing them.
- Pause routing and bandwidth-sharing software. Viki specifically includes bandwidth-sharing apps in its troubleshooting guidance because they can make traffic appear to come through an intermediary network.
- Test one device on another connection. A phone using cellular data can show whether the home router or ISP is involved. Do not treat this as a permanent workaround for a live event or plan restriction; it is a diagnostic comparison.
VPN controls differ by product. If you cannot find the disconnect option, use that product’s support instructions rather than deleting unrelated security settings.
Verify the country and IP address Netflix sees
Netflix recommends using fast.com from a device connected to the affected network. Select Show more info and record the Client country and Client IP.
- If the Client country differs from your actual country, the device or network likely still has a VPN, proxy, or other location-routing problem.
- If the country matches, retain the IP address for escalation; a matching country does not by itself clear the address from a VPN or proxy reputation list.
- Run the check on the same network and, when possible, the same device that shows the streaming warning. A result from cellular data may describe a different connection.
Do not infer a specific detection technology from this test. It establishes only what location and address the service-facing connection appears to use.

- Disconnect the VPN or disable the proxy on the device, security product, or router where it is configured.
- Close the streaming app or browser completely. On a television or mobile device, force-close it if the operating system provides that control.
- Reconnect to the ordinary home network without the VPN and reopen the service.
- Play the same title or event that produced the warning.
- For Netflix, run fast.com again if the warning remains and save the Client country and Client IP.
Do not assume that changing VPN servers, protocols, or providers will bypass the block. The official service instructions reviewed here recommend disabling the VPN for affected plans and content; they do not guarantee that another server will work.
When the VPN is off but the warning remains
A stale network profile, router setting, DNS configuration, or inaccurate IP-location record can keep the warning visible after an app has been disconnected. Follow the service’s sequence and test after each change.
Netflix device and router sequence
- Reset the affected device’s network settings using the device manufacturer’s normal reset option. This removes saved network information, so have the Wi-Fi password available.
- Restore the modem or router to its default network configuration if the device reset did not help. Back up any custom settings first, because a factory reset can remove Wi-Fi names, passwords, port rules, and other configuration.
- Reconnect the device to the ordinary home network and test Netflix before reinstalling or changing unrelated applications.

Test after each action
Change one layer at a time: device, router, then ISP support. If several settings are changed simultaneously, you will not know which one removed the warning, and restoring a useful configuration becomes harder.

What to ask your ISP
When a VPN is definitely off and the warning survives device and router resets, contact the ISP that supplies the affected connection. Give support the exact service message, the device, the time of the test, and the fast.com Client country and IP address.
Ask the ISP to confirm that the Client country and IP match the home connection. Also ask whether the connection is using the ISP’s DNS server. Netflix’s guidance says that, if the DNS server is not the ISP’s, the ISP can help switch the connection to its DNS; restart the Netflix app after making that change. If the country, IP, and DNS details already match the ISP’s records, Netflix says the ISP may need to work with Netflix.
Do not describe the issue merely as slow streaming. The useful escalation question is whether the service-facing IP is correctly assigned to your country and whether the connection uses the expected DNS configuration.
Why false positives can take time to clear
Netflix’s Open Connect Partner Help Center explains that a customer IP address can be flagged for potential VPN or proxy misuse. Its network-operator guidance says IP addresses should be correctly registered with the relevant Regional Internet Registry (RIR). If an address was allocated by an upstream provider, that provider must request the necessary change.
Netflix says it can take 2 weeks or longer for its systems to discover RIR IP-allocation changes. That estimate applies to network-operator records; it is not a promise that a consumer’s warning will disappear after a fixed waiting period. Keep the ISP ticket open and ask whether the address assignment or registration has changed.
The detailed algorithms and signals behind VPN detection are not disclosed in the cited service help pages. Claims about deep-packet inspection, browser fingerprinting, DNS leaks, IP rotation, or a particular provider’s success rate go beyond the documented evidence.
Common mistakes that prolong the block
- Changing servers repeatedly. This does not address an unsupported ad-supported plan or live event and may leave you with more confusing test results.
- Resetting everything immediately. Check the plan, title type, and fast.com location first; a factory reset is disruptive and should be done with a record of the original configuration.
- Checking only the streaming device. A VPN on the router or antivirus software can affect the device without showing a local VPN app.
- Using a result from the wrong network. A Client country from cellular data cannot diagnose a home broadband IP.
- Assuming a generic network error is a VPN block. Capture the exact wording or code before applying VPN-specific steps.
- Expecting a purchase to solve it. The documented fixes are settings changes and service or ISP support; buying a router, streaming box, cable, or book is not an evidence-based remedy for this warning.

- Record the service, message or code, device, title, and whether the title is live.
- Check whether the account uses an ad-supported Netflix experience or another plan/content combination that disallows VPN connections.
- Disconnect VPNs and proxies in apps, antivirus software, device settings, browser settings, and the router.
- Pause bandwidth-sharing or routing software, especially when troubleshooting Viki.

- Retry after closing and reopening the app.
