Why a stream says it is unavailable in your country
Sports streaming rights are often sold for particular countries or regions. A broadcaster may be allowed to show a match in one territory but not another, even if its app works internationally. ABC, for example, says much of its content is limited to Australia because of rights restrictions and contractual arrangements, and that some live sports coverage is unavailable outside Australia for contractual reasons.

The wording on screen can help distinguish a rights restriction from a location-detection problem. “Blackout” or “content is subject to blackout” usually describes a rights rule for a particular event and market. “Not available in your current location” or a “geoblock message” can reflect a rights restriction, but it can also mean the service cannot reliably determine your location. The terms are not perfectly consistent across services, so check the event rather than relying on the error wording alone.

A service cannot necessarily stream every event everywhere it operates. A league may grant rights to different broadcasters in different territories, or an agreement may exclude certain locations. Buying a subscription therefore does not guarantee access to every live game from every country. The service’s event listing and the league’s availability information are the best starting points for your specific location.

Local or national blackouts
A blackout is narrower than a country-wide restriction: a league streaming service may be prevented from showing a game live in a particular market because a local or national rights holder has the exclusive live broadcast rights there. The NBA describes its US and Canada blackouts this way. That does not mean the game is unavailable everywhere or that the league subscription is broken; it means a different authorized broadcaster may carry it in the affected market.
Incorrect location detection
Some services use your internet address (IP address) to estimate your location. ESPN says it determines a viewer’s location by IP address. If the address is associated with the wrong city or country, the service may block you even when you are physically in an eligible place. VPNs, proxies, firewalls, security software, network configuration, and occasional ISP geolocation errors can all affect what a service sees. Apps may also require device location permission for live sports.
Check whether the event is actually available where you are
Before changing device or network settings, establish whether the event should be available live in your country. Record the sport, event, streaming service, your country or market, and the exact message. Then use the service’s official event lookup or location information and the league’s current availability guide. HBO Max, for example, directs viewers to check event eligibility by location. Rights can differ by event, so a service’s general availability in your country is not proof that a particular game is included.

- Check whether the restriction applies to the whole country, a local market, or only that event.
- Look for a named authorized broadcaster in the league’s or event organizer’s current listings.
- Check whether the service offers a replay, audio coverage, or a delayed stream during a live blackout; these options vary by event and service.
- If traveling, check the destination country’s supported locations and event rules rather than assuming your home subscription works unchanged.
Do not assume that a subscription, a different billing address, or access while traveling overrides a local blackout. If the event is rights-restricted in your location, use the authorized alternative identified by the league or broadcaster.
When comparing options, compare the same event and market rather than ranking services in general. Check whether a listed broadcaster has the local game or only a national broadcast, whether the restriction covers live viewing but permits a replay or audio, and whether the service’s travel terms cover the country you are visiting. These details can change from one event to another, even within the same league.
What to try if you should be able to watch
If the official event information says the stream is available in your location, work through these checks in order. Change one thing at a time and retry the stream so you can tell whether it helped.

- Confirm the location shown by the service. Review the exact error and any account or event location setting the service provides. Check that the app or browser has location permission if it asks for it. HBO Max notes that location access can be required for live sports; the precise permission steps depend on your device and app.
- Turn off location-masking routing for the test. Disconnect a VPN or proxy and disable private relay or similar routing if enabled, then close and reopen the app or reload the stream. NBA Help Center says: “Because NBA League Pass availability and content rights can vary by region, VPNs and proxies are not supported and may prevent content from loading properly.” Its error 7027 guidance was updated September 13, 2026. These tools can create a mismatch or be unsupported; they are not a dependable solution to a rights restriction.
- Try a normal personal network. If you are on workplace, school, hotel, public Wi-Fi, or a network with a firewall or security filter, test using a personal connection you are authorized to use. A managed network may route traffic through another location or interfere with the service’s location check. Avoid bypassing an organization’s network rules.
- Check for an ISP location mismatch. If the service still identifies the wrong country on an ordinary home connection, your ISP’s IP address may be incorrectly geolocated. You can ask the ISP whether the address is registered to the correct region and tell the streaming service that its IP-based location result appears wrong.
- Refresh the service and network only as needed. Sign out and back in, restart the app or browser, and install any available app update. Restarting network equipment may help with a connection problem, but it cannot change the event’s broadcast rights. Follow the streaming service’s own troubleshooting instructions before altering router or firewall settings.
- Contact the service if the mismatch remains. Give support the event, your country and city, the exact error text or code, device and app, ISP, and whether you were using a VPN, proxy, managed network, or private relay. That information helps distinguish an eligibility rule from an incorrect location result.
Keep the result of each check simple: note whether the error changed after allowing location access, switching from a managed network to a personal one, or disabling a routing tool. If the message stays the same, stop making repeated network changes and share those details with support. A location check based on an ISP address may need to be investigated by the provider; restarting equipment is not a way to alter rights eligibility.
NBA League Pass: an example of how rules differ
NBA League Pass illustrates why availability must be checked against both the destination and the event. Its support page, updated October 12, 2026, says the service is available in most countries and regions, but lists Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and Ukraine (Crimea, Donetsk People’s Republic, and Luhansk People’s Republic) as unavailable. It also says local blackouts may apply in the United States and Canada, and that subscribers can use League Pass in any supported country while traveling. These are NBA-specific rules, not a general rule for other leagues or streaming services.

For US NBA games, the guide says viewers facing a local-team blackout should use a regional cable provider’s in-market local access subscription. For nationally broadcast games, it names ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, or Amazon Prime Video as alternatives. The guide also describes replay timing for those categories. Because rights and schedules can change, use the current event-specific NBA guide to confirm which broadcaster and replay option apply; those examples are not universal recommendations for other sports or countries.

This example also shows why “the service works in my country” and “this game is live on this service here” are different questions. League Pass availability while traveling applies only in supported countries under its own rules; it does not make the NBA’s US and Canada blackout rules disappear or establish what another league allows.

If the current event listing confirms that the game is blacked out or not licensed for your location, device troubleshooting will not make the stream authorized or available. Check the league, event organizer, or broadcaster’s official local listings for another licensed live option. If none is listed, look for an authorized replay, highlights, or audio coverage, where offered. Availability and timing are specific to the event and service.

If the service’s location check is wrong despite the event being eligible, keep the error code and contact support rather than repeatedly changing networks. For an IP-based mismatch, the provider may need to verify the account or location, or the ISP may need to correct its geolocation information. A subscription’s portability and travel rules are service-specific, and no single fix applies to every country, sport, or app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a sports livestream blocked even though I pay for the service?
A subscription does not necessarily include every event in every country. Rights may be limited by territory, or a local or national broadcaster may hold exclusive live rights in your market. Check the event’s current availability listing and any blackout information for your location.
Can a VPN or proxy cause a sports-stream location error?
Yes. A VPN, proxy, private relay, or similar routing can make your apparent location differ from your actual one, and some services do not support these tools. NBA Help Center says VPNs and proxies may prevent League Pass content from loading. Turn them off while diagnosing an eligible stream; they are not a dependable workaround for a rights restriction.
What should I do if the service thinks I am in the wrong country?
First make sure the event is available where you are. Then check app location permission, disable location-masking routing, and test an ordinary personal network if you are on managed or public Wi-Fi. If the error persists, contact the service with the event, location, error, device, and ISP details; your ISP may also need to check its IP geolocation.
Will my subscription work when I travel?
That depends on the service, destination, and event. Check the service’s supported-country list and event-specific rules before traveling. NBA League Pass says subscribers can use it in any supported country, but that NBA policy should not be assumed for other services.
Can restarting my router remove a blackout?
No. Restarting an app or network equipment may help with a technical connection or location-detection problem, but it cannot change the event’s broadcast rights. If an official listing confirms a blackout, check for an authorized local broadcaster, replay, highlights, or audio coverage where offered.
The Bottom Line
First verify the event’s authorized availability in your country and market. If it should be available, check location permissions and network routing, disable VPN or proxy tools while testing, and contact the service if its location result still appears wrong. A real blackout or territorial restriction calls for an authorized alternative, not more device troubleshooting.
