If a Space Engineers server shows an unexpected value such as 4/16, the first number is players currently online and the second is the maximum players for the session that is actually running. That denominator comes from the session’s effective MaxPlayers value; it is not necessarily the number in the menu you last edited. An existing world can keep its own value in Sandbox.sbc, while a -maxPlayers <number> launch argument can override stored settings when the dedicated server starts.

What the slot count means
The multiplayer screen uses the format online players / maximum players. In 4/16, four players are connected and the running session advertises 16 as its maximum. The denominator is calculated by the server process that loaded the world; it is not a cached copy of a setup-menu field.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction explains why changing a value in a management panel or world-creation screen may appear to do nothing. The running instance might be loading a different save, reading a per-world XML value, or receiving a command-line override at startup. A server can therefore show a correct count for its own configuration while still disagreeing with the value an administrator remembers changing.
Why the number can look stale
Space Engineers has more than one configuration layer. A dedicated-server profile can provide defaults or settings for creating a world, but an existing world stores session settings with the save. If the server continues to load that existing save, changing only the profile does not necessarily change the world’s stored maximum.

The dedicated-server executable also accepts an explicit -maxPlayers <number> argument. When present, the server parses that argument as a maximum-player override for the process. A shortcut, batch file, service definition, or hosting-panel startup command can therefore make the displayed denominator differ from the XML value you inspected.
Which setting controls the effective maximum?
| Layer | When it matters | What to inspect | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Running session | Always; this is what the multiplayer screen reports | The server instance and world it actually loaded | One running process |
| World save | Especially for an existing world | The loaded world’s Sandbox.sbc, including <MaxPlayers>...</MaxPlayers> |
That save |
| Dedicated-server profile or configuration | Most important when creating a new world, and as a source of defaults | The profile selected by the instance | Profile or server setup |
| Launch argument | Whenever startup includes an override | Shortcut, script, service definition, or provider panel containing -maxPlayers |
That startup invocation |
| Platform or host limit | When the environment imposes a ceiling or range | The platform’s documented multiplayer limits | Platform-wide or host-wide |
Existing worlds: check Sandbox.sbc first
Keen’s support guidance distinguishes an existing save from a new world. For an existing world, the session settings are stored with that world, normally in its Sandbox.sbc file. Open the file for the exact save directory being loaded and find the <MaxPlayers> element. The number between the tags is the value stored for that save.
Editing a similarly named file in another profile, backup folder, or test directory will not affect the active session. The important question is not “Which file did I edit?” but “Which world directory did this instance load?”

New worlds: the dedicated-server configuration can seed settings
When a world is created through the dedicated-server setup, the selected server profile or configuration supplies the creation settings. That is why a profile change can affect a newly created world while an older world keeps its previous Sandbox.sbc value. Once a world exists, treat its own save as an independent configuration layer and verify which file the server is loading.
Launch arguments can override stored XML
The dedicated-server source and setup documentation identify -maxPlayers <number> as an explicit override. Search the complete startup path, not only the graphical manager: a desktop shortcut may have it in its target, a batch file may append it, a Windows service may store it in its executable arguments, and a provider panel may generate it automatically.
If that argument is present, correcting Sandbox.sbc alone may not change the running denominator. Remove the stale argument or change its number, then restart the same instance so the new command line is used.

Platform limits still apply
The current SessionSettings reference documents a dedicated-server GUI range of 2 to 64 players. The same reference says player-hosted worlds are capped at 8. Platform limits can vary, so a value accepted by a dedicated PC server may not be available in a player-hosted or console environment. A configured number outside the platform’s allowed range can be reduced, rejected, or otherwise fail to produce the value you expect.
Seven-step diagnostic procedure
- Stop the server cleanly. Shut down the dedicated server before editing files. This prevents the process from writing its in-memory settings back over your changes during shutdown.
- Identify the active instance and world path. In the dedicated-server manager, service definition, or startup configuration, note the instance being launched and the world directory it loads. If several profiles or saves exist, record the full path rather than relying on a display name. A profile can be correct while the service points to another save.
- Read the loaded world’s XML. Make a backup, open that world’s
Sandbox.sbc, and locate<MaxPlayers>number</MaxPlayers>. Record the number exactly as stored. Do not edit a backup, template, or world that the instance does not load. - Inspect the dedicated-server profile. Check the profile or configuration selected by this instance, particularly if the world was newly created. Confirm that you are looking at the profile used by the running service, not a different administrative profile. The profile explains how a new world may have received its setting, but it does not prove that an existing save will adopt the value.
- Search every startup surface for
-maxPlayers. Inspect the shortcut target, batch or PowerShell script, service properties, scheduled task, and any provider-panel startup field. Record the argument’s number. If it conflicts with the world XML, correct or remove the argument according to the value you intend to run. - Start the same instance again. Use the identical service, profile, and world path you identified in step 2. After the world finishes loading, open the in-game multiplayer screen and verify the complete online/max value. Checking a different server entry or a newly created test world can lead to a false conclusion.
- Investigate a value that reverts. Stop the server, compare the file’s timestamp and contents with your backup, and check which path the manager or provider rewrote. If a panel regenerates a profile or startup command on every launch, its behavior is provider-specific; the generic Space Engineers documentation cannot identify that panel’s precedence rules. The useful evidence is which file changed, which command was launched, and which world directory was opened.
Common wrong-count scenarios
You changed “Max Players,” but an old save still shows the previous denominator
This usually means the edit affected a profile or creation screen while the server continued loading an existing world. Follow the active path to that world’s Sandbox.sbc and change its MaxPlayers value while the server is stopped. Then check for a launch override before restarting.
The XML says 8, but the server shows 4/16
The 16 is consistent with an effective override of 16, regardless of the four people currently online. Search the startup command for -maxPlayers 16 or an equivalent generated argument. A stale shortcut, service definition, or host-panel field can supply that number at launch.

The panel says 16, but the game shows a smaller value
First verify that the panel is controlling the same instance and save you checked. If it is, look for a platform or host ceiling and then inspect the generated startup command. A panel’s displayed field may be a template value, while the command actually starting the server contains another maximum.
The number changes back after every restart
A process that is still running can overwrite edits when it exits, or a manager can regenerate the XML or command line during startup. Make the change with the server stopped, restart once, and compare timestamps and paths if it returns. This identifies whether the save, profile, or external manager is the writer.
You are running a player-hosted or console session
File-based dedicated-server instructions may not apply. The SessionSettings reference lists an 8-player cap for player-hosted worlds, while dedicated-server controls are documented separately. Check the limits and controls for the platform hosting the session before treating a lower denominator as a file error.

Several servers have similar names
Server browsers and management tools can make two instances look alike. Use the service or launch definition to map the advertised server to one world directory, then verify that directory’s Sandbox.sbc. A perfectly edited file has no effect if another instance is the one players are joining.
Choosing the right remedy
| Question | If the answer is yes | Preferred action |
|---|---|---|
| Is this an existing world? | The save already has its own session settings | Edit the loaded world’s Sandbox.sbc, then check startup arguments |
| Is this a newly created world? | The creation profile may have supplied the initial value | Verify the selected dedicated-server profile and the resulting save |
Does startup contain -maxPlayers? |
The process has an explicit override | Correct or remove the argument before restarting |
| Is the session player-hosted or platform-restricted? | A hard cap or range may apply | Use a value within that platform’s documented limits |
| Does a managed panel rewrite files? | Your manual value may not persist | Change the panel’s actual startup/profile setting or ask the provider which instance it controls |
Think of the settings by scope. Sandbox.sbc is per-world, a profile is broader or creation-oriented, and a command-line argument belongs to one startup invocation. A platform cap is an external constraint on all of them. The most reliable fix is the narrowest layer that explains the wrong denominator, with no conflicting launch override left in place.
Preventing future slot-count surprises
- Keep one recorded source of truth. Document the world path, the profile name, and the exact startup command for each server instance.
- Do not leave obsolete overrides in scripts. If the intended value now lives in the world save, remove an old
-maxPlayersargument rather than allowing two administrators to maintain different numbers. - Back up before editing XML. Preserve the original file so an invalid edit or manager rewrite can be recognized and reversed.
- Validate after a full restart. A value visible before shutdown is not enough; confirm the online/max display after the same service starts the same world again.
- Watch for path and timestamp changes. When a number reverts, those two clues usually reveal whether the active save, profile, or external manager wrote it.
- Respect the environment’s limits. For the documented dedicated-server GUI, use 2–64; for player-hosted worlds, the reference lists an 8-player cap. Other platform or provider restrictions can be additional.
The practical diagnosis
A wrong slot count is normally a configuration-selection problem, not a calculation error. Read the denominator as the value accepted by the currently running session. Trace that session to its world directory, inspect Sandbox.sbc, check the dedicated-server profile when creation settings are involved, and search the complete startup command for -maxPlayers. Once those layers refer to the same instance and comply with the platform limit, the multiplayer screen should report the intended maximum.
