Why a Solana Transaction Is Pending or Failing—and How to Troubleshoot It

A Solana wallet’s pending label or timeout is not a diagnosis. It only means the wallet has not yet established the status you asked for. The transaction may already be processed, waiting for a stronger confirmation level, rejected before execution, or absent from the network altogether.

Find the transaction signature first, then inspect its status, blockhash expiry, error message, and confirmation level. Do not submit a second transaction merely because the wallet stopped waiting. A duplicate transfer or swap can create a new problem while the original is still valid.

What a pending Solana transaction actually means

A Solana transaction moves through several distinct stages. An RPC node can receive it, simulate it, forward it to the leader that may produce the next block, include it in a block, and receive votes that raise its commitment level. A wallet may display “pending” while any of those steps is unresolved.

The label is therefore a user-interface state, not proof that the transaction failed. A timeout can also be local: the wallet, browser, or RPC connection may have stopped waiting even though the cluster later processed the signature.

Status What it tells you When it is useful
processed The transaction was included in a block observed by the node, but that block has not received the stronger voting threshold. Immediate UI feedback, such as showing that a request reached the network.
confirmed The block has received supermajority voting. Most ordinary payments and application actions, according to Solana’s confirmation guidance.
finalized The block is rooted and is not expected to be rolled back under normal operation. High-value, compliance-sensitive, or other actions that need the strongest settlement assurance.
Failed The network or an invoked program rejected the transaction. The signature can still be visible with an error. Diagnosing the exact instruction, account, balance, or fee problem.
Not found The explorer or node cannot currently locate the signature. It may never have been accepted, may have expired before landing, or may be queried through a lagging or incompatible node. Verifying whether a fresh transaction is safe to construct.

Commitment is not the same as success of the application action. A transaction can be processed and still contain an instruction that ultimately fails. Conversely, a wallet can show pending while a processed transaction is already visible at a lower commitment level.

How to check a pending transaction before retrying

  1. Locate the signature. Open the wallet’s transaction details and copy the transaction signature (also called a transaction ID). If the wallet does not show one, note that the request may not have reached an RPC node.
  2. Open the signature in a Solana explorer or query it through the wallet’s status view. Confirm that the signature belongs to the intended wallet, amount, recipient, token, and network. Never assume that the newest entry is the transaction you meant to inspect.
  3. Read both status and commitment. Distinguish processed, confirmed, finalized, failed, and not found. A processed result may need more time before your application should treat it as settled.
  4. Inspect the error details. Look for a blockhash error, insufficient funds, compute-budget parsing error, account-loading problem, or a program and instruction error. The displayed program logs are usually more useful than the word “failed.”
  5. Check expiry. If the transaction uses a recent blockhash and the observed block height has passed its lastValidBlockHeight, the original message is no longer eligible for normal processing. Verify that the signature did not land before creating a replacement.

If no signature exists, treat the event differently from a known failed signature. A wallet timeout without a signature does not establish that the network accepted anything. You can prepare a new transaction only after checking the wallet history, the explorer, and any RPC response available to you.

Why did my Solana transaction fail?

Solana validates a transaction in stages. The fee payer and signatures are checked, the recent blockhash is checked for freshness, accounts and programs are loaded, compute-budget instructions are interpreted, and then the instructions execute. Failure at any stage produces a different remedy.

Symptom or error Meaning Next check
Pending label or client timeout The client has not established the desired status; this does not prove failure. Use the signature to distinguish inclusion, commitment, failure, and absence.
BlockhashNotFound or “blockhash not found” The submitting or simulating node does not recognize the transaction’s recent blockhash. It can be expired, associated with a different node view, or newer than the node’s simulation context. Get a fresh blockhash, align commitment settings, and check RPC lag.
Block height beyond lastValidBlockHeight The recent blockhash has expired for normal processing. Confirm the original signature did not land, then rebuild and sign a new message.
InsufficientFundsForFee The fee payer cannot cover the required network fee and applicable minimum-balance conditions. Check available SOL in the fee-payer account, not just the token balance being transferred.
Compute-budget parsing error Compute-budget instructions are invalid, malformed, or conflicting. Inspect compute-unit-limit and compute-unit-price instructions and simulation output.
Account-loading or missing-program error A required account or program could not be loaded or validated, possibly because account-data limits or the account list are wrong. Check every account, program ID, ownership relationship, and version-specific account-data requirement.
Instruction or program error An invoked on-chain program rejected the requested operation even though the network accepted the transaction envelope. Read simulation and transaction logs, then check the program’s constraints and input values.
Fee charged despite failure Fee validation and deduction are handled separately from rollback of instruction state. Expect the unsuccessful transaction to consume its fee; fix the cause before retrying.

What does “blockhash not found” mean?

Every Solana transaction carries a recent blockhash. It prevents indefinite replay and gives validators a short window in which to process the message. Current Solana documentation describes a processing-age limit of 150 slots (MAX_PROCESSING_AGE). Because the queue age is zero-indexed, the Cookbook explains that as many as 151 stored hashes can be considered recent enough. Slot duration fluctuates, so the practical window is approximately 60 to 90 seconds rather than a guaranteed wall-clock deadline.

“Blockhash not found” does not identify one single fault. The hash may have aged past the processing window, the transaction may have been built from one RPC node’s view and simulated or sent through another, or the receiving node may be behind. A node can also be asked to simulate a transaction using a commitment context that cannot yet see the block containing the hash.

Commitment choices for blockhashes and preflight

Setting Freshness and risk Practical use
processed Usually the newest view, but more exposed to a block on a fork that is later dropped. Latency-sensitive work when the application can tolerate more fork risk.
confirmed Older than the newest processed view but supported by supermajority voting. The usual recommendation for most blockhash, simulation, and send requests.
finalized Strongest fork safety, but the hash starts further behind and leaves less usable processing time. Actions that prioritize settlement assurance over maximum freshness.

Use a consistent commitment for blockhash acquisition, simulation, and send preflight unless you have a deliberate reason to mix them. A mismatch can make a fresh-looking transaction appear unknown to the node performing simulation.

Wallet-user troubleshooting: a safe decision path

If the signature is confirmed or finalized

Do not resend it. Check the recipient, amount, token mint, and application result. If an app still shows an old balance, refresh the app or allow it to catch up to the same commitment level. A wallet that waits for finalized while the explorer shows confirmed is waiting for a stronger state, not necessarily reporting a failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the signature is processed

Wait for the commitment appropriate to the action. For a routine payment, confirmed is generally sufficient according to Solana’s guide; for high-value or compliance-sensitive settlement, wait for finalized. Avoid creating a second payment while the first signature is still visible as processed.

If the signature is failed

Read the specific program or instruction error. Confirm that the fee payer has enough SOL for the network fee and any minimum-balance requirement. A swap, mint, staking action, or other application can reject a condition such as slippage, account ownership, an expired application quote, or an invalid input even when Solana accepted the transaction for execution. Correct that condition before submitting a new transaction.

If the signature is not found or the blockhash expired

First verify the original signature and expiry state through another reliable view if available. A not-found result can be caused by RPC lag, but an expired blockhash means the signed message itself cannot simply be revived. Once you have established that the original did not land, create a fresh transaction so it receives a new recent blockhash and sign it again.

If the wallet never produced a signature

Check whether the wallet rejected the request locally, lost its connection, or ran out of time before submission. Review the wallet’s activity history and any displayed RPC error. Only construct a replacement after confirming that no signature was submitted. Never share a seed phrase or private key with a person claiming to troubleshoot the transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Solana fees and atomic execution affect failures

Solana transactions are atomic. Solana Documentation states: “If any instruction fails, the entire transaction fails and all state changes are reverted.” The fee is the important qualification: an unsuccessful transaction can still incur its network fee because fee validation and deduction occur separately from the rollback of instruction state.

The documented base-fee limit is 5,000 lamports per signature. Transactions can also include an optional prioritization fee. A priority fee can improve scheduling likelihood when leaders are competing for block space, but it cannot repair an expired blockhash, an insufficient balance, an invalid compute-budget instruction, or a program instruction that rejects its inputs.

The documented maximum transaction compute limit is 1,400,000 compute units. Applications that need more compute should first simulate and then set a valid compute budget. Raising the budget or price is not a substitute for fixing a failing instruction.

Developer workflow for diagnosing RPC and transaction failures

1. Capture the complete transaction context

Log the signature, the recent blockhash, lastValidBlockHeight, the commitment used to obtain the blockhash, the preflight commitment, the RPC response, simulation logs, and the final transaction error. Without these values, a later “pending” report is difficult to distinguish from an expired message or a program rejection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Obtain the blockhash immediately before signing

Call getLatestBlockhash as close as practical to message construction and signing. Retain both the returned blockhash and lastValidBlockHeight. Do not cache a blockhash across a long user approval flow. If signing takes longer than the validity window, rebuild the message before sending.

3. Keep commitment and preflight settings coherent

Use the same intentional commitment for blockhash acquisition, simulation, and send preflight. Solana’s Cookbook recommends confirmed for most requests and documents the freshness-versus-fork trade-off of processed and finalized. A transaction built against one RPC view and simulated against another can produce a misleading blockhash error.

4. Check node health and lag

Compare the RPC node’s observed slot and block height with a second trusted view. A lagging node may not know the blockhash you just obtained elsewhere. The confirmation guidance also warns that a node that cannot determine an expiration height may forward a transaction only once and later drop it. Route blockhash acquisition, simulation, and submission through a coherent node path when possible.

  • Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).

5. Simulate and read the logs

Simulation can reveal the first failing instruction and show estimated compute use before you spend a fee. Inspect account-loading messages, program logs, custom program errors, and compute-budget parsing. For transaction formats in which configuration values are encoded in the message, verify that the compute-unit limit and price instructions are valid and appear in the intended order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Monitor confirmation and expiration

Track both the signature’s confirmation status and the current block height. If the current height exceeds lastValidBlockHeight and the original transaction has not landed, stop resending that signed message. Rebuild with a fresh blockhash and re-sign. Repeatedly broadcasting an expired message cannot make it valid.

7. Add a priority fee only for a scheduling problem

Use current network or provider estimates when competition for block space is the identified cause. The fee changes scheduling incentives; it does not guarantee inclusion. Keep the fee separate from diagnosis of blockhash freshness, account balances, compute-budget validity, and program correctness.

Transaction-size and account constraints to check

Solana Documentation lists 1,232 bytes as the maximum transaction size for the referenced transaction format and separately notes a larger limit for the version 1 format. Do not treat 1,232 bytes as a universal limit for every message type. If a transaction is rejected for size or account-data reasons, inspect the exact version, address list, loaded accounts, and serialization used by the client.

Account loading can fail before instruction execution. Verify that every required account is present, writable or read-only as expected, owned by the correct program, and funded where a minimum balance is required. A missing program account and a program-level rejection look similar in a wallet but require different fixes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I retry a failed Solana transaction?

Yes, but retry the cause, not blindly the same signed bytes. A failed transaction whose signature is known can safely be diagnosed first because its state changes were rolled back; its fee may still have been charged. Rebuild only after determining whether the failure was caused by an expired blockhash, insufficient SOL, invalid compute-budget settings, stale application data, or a program constraint.

  • Fresh blockhash needed: obtain a new blockhash, update the message, and sign again.
  • Insufficient SOL: fund the fee payer and recheck the required minimum balance before signing.
  • Program or input error: correct the account, amount, slippage, permissions, or other application condition.
  • RPC or commitment mismatch: align the node path and preflight settings, then simulate again.
  • Congestion: consider a measured priority fee after confirming that the transaction is otherwise valid.

Do not retry automatically when the original signature is confirmed or finalized. For transfers and actions that are not idempotent, an automatic duplicate can have a real financial effect.

Preventing pending and failed transactions

  • Show the signature to the user as soon as the wallet or RPC returns it.
  • Display commitment explicitly instead of using one generic “pending” state.
  • Fetch the blockhash immediately before signing and expose expiry monitoring based on lastValidBlockHeight.
  • Use coherent commitment and preflight settings, with confirmed as the normal starting point unless the application has a documented reason to choose another level.
  • Simulate transactions and preserve logs for support diagnostics.
  • Check the fee payer’s available SOL, not only the asset balance being moved.
  • Validate compute-budget instructions, account lists, message size, and program-specific requirements before submission.
  • Use priority fees only when scheduling competition is demonstrated, and communicate that they improve likelihood rather than guarantee inclusion.
  • Keep a second RPC view or health check available for distinguishing node lag from an actually absent transaction.

Bottom line

Treat “pending” as an invitation to inspect, not as a verdict. The signature, commitment level, blockhash validity, RPC context, logs, and fee-payer balance together identify the problem. Once a transaction is confirmed or finalized, do not duplicate it; once its blockhash has expired without landing, rebuild and sign a fresh transaction; and when an instruction fails, fix the program or input condition knowing that state changes rolled back but the fee may not.
