If your robot vacuum’s mop is leaving streaks or dirty marks, start by removing loose dust with a dry vacuum pass, fitting a clean pad, and refilling the tank with fresh water. Then check the water-flow setting and use cleaning solution only if your exact model permits it. Dirty pads, contaminated water, excess or insufficient water, and residue from an unapproved or overdosed cleaner are recurring causes in manufacturers’ guidance; the right settings and liquid rules vary by model.
Identify what the marks may be telling you
There is no single cause that applies to every robot mop. Check the simplest factors first: whether the marks look like dirt being dragged across the floor, or like water left behind. That distinction can help guide troubleshooting, but manufacturers do not provide a universal visual test, and wet marks are not guaranteed to fade as they dry.

- Dirty-looking residue: Check for loose dust on the floor, a dirty or worn pad, and stale or contaminated water. Xiaomi says its X20+ may leave the floor dirtier after mopping when the pad needs cleaning; its guidance is to clean the pads before use and increase pad-cleaning frequency. Xiaomi X20+ support.
- Water marks or streaks: Check the water output and any cleaning formula. Xiaomi says excessive water can leave marks, while too little may fail to clean effectively and smear dirt. Its H50 Pro guidance notes that smoother floors can make water marks more visible. Xiaomi H50 Pro support.
Fix streaks and dirty marks in this order
- Remove loose dust first. Run vacuum-only or dry mode before a wet pass, particularly if you can see dust or debris. BISSELL recommends dry mode before wet mode for the ReadyClean A3, and Xiaomi likewise advises removing dust before mopping. Wetting loose dirt can make it easier for the pad to drag it across the floor. BISSELL ReadyClean A3 instructions.
- Fit a clean, absorbent pad. Wash reusable pads as the manufacturer directs, then attach one that is clean and in good condition. If proper cleaning no longer restores performance, or the pad is worn, replace it with a pad compatible with your exact model. iRobot’s Combo 100/1000 series guidance also covers pad care. iRobot Roomba Combo support.
- Refresh the water and inspect the tanks. Fill with fresh water and clean the tanks as directed in your manual. Contaminated or stale water can put dirt back onto the floor. If your model has a dirty-water tank, empty it as instructed after a run. Xiaomi X20+ support.
- Adjust water output moderately. If the floor is left visibly wet, lower the flow; if dirt is being smeared, check that the output is not too low. Use the app or onboard controls only as your model supports, and follow its recommended setting for the floor. There is no universal setting for every robot or surface. - Check the cleaner and dose. Confirm whether the robot allows any cleaning solution in its tank before adding one. Do not assume ordinary household floor cleaner is safe for an onboard system. For example, BISSELL specifies its bare-floor formula at one capful per clean-water tank for the ReadyClean A3; that product and dose are not general instructions for other robots. BISSELL also warns that excess formula can cause streaking on the SpinWave R5. ReadyClean A3 instructions and SpinWave R5 instructions.
Check floor and model-specific factors
A floor’s surface can affect how noticeable a mark is: Xiaomi specifically notes that smoother floors are more prone to visible water marks. eufy’s Omni E35 guidance also identifies humidity and floor temperature as possible factors for that model. These are model-specific observations, not universal explanations for streaks on every robot or floor. eufy Omni E35 support.

When to contact the manufacturer
If streaking or dirty residue continues after you have cleaned the pad and tanks, refreshed the water, dry-vacuumed first, and checked the model’s flow and liquid instructions, consult that robot’s manual or official support. Xiaomi advises contacting local official after-sales service if water marks on the H50 Pro become increasingly severe. For other brands, use their support channel rather than assuming a pump or other component has failed.
