Why a Robot Mower Gets Stuck or Loses Its Boundary—and How to Fix It

A robot mower that stops, spins, slips, or says No loop signal usually has one of two problems: a physical problem such as an obstacle, wet turf, debris, or a slope, or a navigation problem involving power, boundary-wire connections, wire routing, or signal interference. Start by recording the exact alert and the place where the mower stopped. Then check the charging station and the mower’s physical path before attempting any wire repair. The correct fix depends on whether your mower uses a buried or pinned boundary loop, a guide wire, or a virtual boundary created by positioning technology.

Start with the exact symptom

Manufacturers use different wording for similar failures. Your display or app may show No loop signal, Outside work area, Lost boundary signal, Mower trapped, Slipped, or a wheel fault. Write down the exact text, mower model, location, and whether the failure repeats. A mower that fails at random points needs a different investigation from one that always stops beside the same fence or slope.

  • Note whether the mower was leaving the charging station, mowing, turning, or returning to charge.
  • Mark the stopping point with a temporary object so you can inspect the area after switching the mower off.
  • Check the charging station indicator before moving wires or digging.
  • Determine whether the installation uses a physical boundary loop. Virtual-boundary models do not have a perimeter wire to splice or test.

Do not assume that a message mentioning a boundary proves the wire is broken. A loose connector, incorrect terminal, crossed section, interference source, low station power, or a mower that is too far from the wire can produce similar behavior.

Make the safe checks first

Before lifting the mower, clearing grass, or touching a cutting disc, follow the shutdown procedure in its owner’s manual. Remove the mower from automatic operation, switch it off, and disconnect the charging station from mains power when the manual requires it. Keep hands away from the blade and drive wheels while the machine is energized.

  1. Inspect the route. Look for toys, hoses, fallen branches, stones, exposed roots, edging, holes, soft mud, tall grass, and narrow passages. Remove only objects that you can safely reach without entering the blade area.
  2. Check the underside after safe shutdown. Grass, mud, or string wound around a drive wheel or cutting disc can stop movement and trigger a trapped or wheel warning.
  3. Look at the station. Confirm its power supply is connected, the indicator is lit as the manual describes, and the mower can make normal contact with the charging contacts.
  4. Inspect accessible wire and connectors. Do not pull on a boundary wire or open buried sections yet. Look for cuts caused by edging, aeration, animals, gardening, or recent landscaping.
  5. Consider weather. Wet grass, heavy dew, frost, and mud reduce tire grip. If the fault appeared after a storm, electrical damage is possible even when the wire looks intact.

When the alert says No loop signal or Lost boundary signal

1. Verify station power and terminals

A physical-loop system sends its boundary signal from the charging station. Confirm that the station receives power and that the boundary-wire ends are seated in the correct terminals. If the installation has a guide wire, check its connector and terminal as well. A connector that is only partly inserted, corroded, crushed, or attached to the wrong terminal can imitate a broken loop.

Station indicators are model-specific. One mower may show a normal loop with a green light, while another uses a different pattern. Use the light’s meaning from your model’s manual rather than applying a color code from another brand.

2. Inspect known splices before excavating

Accessible splices are common failure points. Check any connector installed after a previous repair, lawn work, or a seasonal relocation. Look for a wire that has pulled out, a connector filled with moisture, or insulation damaged by a shovel or trimmer. Use only the wire type and repair connectors specified for your mower. A generic connector may not provide the required waterproof or electrical connection.

3. Narrow a suspected break with the half-loop method

Husqvarna describes a manual search in which you repeatedly divide the boundary loop into halves until the failed section is isolated. Disconnect power as directed by the installation instructions, expose a safe test point, and follow the manufacturer’s prescribed reconnection and test sequence. Each successful half-loop test eliminates part of the perimeter; a failed test identifies the half that needs closer inspection. The method takes time but can avoid digging up the entire perimeter.

A boundary-wire break detector can speed this process. It is useful only when the mower uses a compatible physical loop and when its signal and connectors match the installation. Manufacturer guidance identifies the detector as a way to locate a break, but does not establish that every detector or repair kit works with every mower. Confirm compatibility before buying or connecting one.

4. Generate a new loop signal only when the manual calls for it

Some systems allow the station to generate a new loop signal after the wire and station checks pass. GARDENA and EGO RM4000E guidance distinguish a physical break from a procedure that creates a new signal. Follow the exact button sequence for your model; do not repeatedly reset the station as a substitute for finding a damaged wire. If the station reports a normal loop yet the mower still loses it, record that result for support.

5. Investigate intermittent or location-specific loss

If the mower loses the boundary only in one area, inspect that area rather than immediately replacing the whole loop. A section may be too far from the wire for the mower’s receiver, or a nearby metal fence, reinforced concrete, buried cable, or other equipment may interfere with the signal. GARDENA identifies metal objects such as fences and reinforcing steel as possible interference sources. Repeated failure at one point is valuable evidence, but it does not prove the wire is broken.

Check whether the wire was moved closer to a slope, retaining edge, fence, or obstacle during recent garden work. Confirm that the wire path follows the installation layout and that parallel runs are separated as the manual specifies. If the problem started immediately after lightning or a severe thunderstorm, the station electronics or mower receiver may have suffered surge damage. Persistent faults after basic checks need professional diagnosis.

When the mower says Outside work area or crosses the boundary

Check the station connections and wire direction

Verify that each loop end is connected to the correct station terminal and that the ends are not crossed. A crossed connection can reverse the expected signal relationship. Inspect island loops around trees, beds, ponds, or play areas: the outbound and return sections must follow the direction shown in the installation instructions. An island loop installed in the wrong direction can cancel or distort the signal near the protected area.

Review clearances around obstacles and slopes

The wire must leave enough room for the mower’s body to turn without placing a wheel over an edge. Clearances vary by model, attachment, wheel design, and installation layout. Husqvarna’s UK outside-work-area guidance gives a normal minimum margin of 35 cm from a slope or obstacle for the cited Automower installation context. That 35 cm figure is not a universal robot-mower rule; use your own model’s current installation manual for the actual distance.

Measure from the wire to the physical edge, not from the station. A wire that is correct beside a flat border may be unsafe beside a drop, ditch, pond, or raised bed. If the mower consistently crosses at one corner, inspect the corner for a tight bend, a damaged pin, a wire that has lifted, or a slope that has changed after erosion.

When the mower is stuck, slipping, or reports a wheel fault

Obstacles and material around moving parts

A mower can become trapped without any boundary failure. Check for a low branch, hose, stone, edging strip, hole, or soft patch that catches the chassis. After safe shutdown, examine the drive wheels and cutting disc for wrapped grass, mud, cable, or other material. Clear it according to the manual; do not reach into the blade area while the mower can start.

Wet grass and dew

Wet turf reduces friction between the drive tires and ground. An operator manual cited for a slipped fault says a collision or wet grass can leave the wheels unable to move and recommends freeing the mower and waiting for the lawn to dry when wet grass is the cause. Worx likewise notes that a wet lawn or significant dew can make its wheels skid. A mower that works normally after the surface dries has a traction problem, not necessarily a defective motor.

Slopes, ditches, and narrow routes

Every model has its own slope capability and turning requirements. Do not apply a single maximum angle to all robot mowers. A route that is technically within a published limit may still fail if the surface is wet, loose, rutted, or too narrow for the mower to turn. A ditch or abrupt edge can trap one wheel even when the average slope appears modest.

Repeatedly mark the exact trap location and inspect the approach from both directions. If the mower reaches the spot only while returning to charge, the route or guide-wire layout may be the issue. If it reaches the spot from several directions, look for a physical depression, obstacle, or insufficient clearance.

Physical wire and virtual boundary systems are different

Question Physical-loop mower Virtual-boundary mower
What defines the work area? A powered boundary wire, often with a guide wire to the station. A digital map or positioning system defined through the mower and its app or setup procedure.
First signal check Station power, boundary terminals, guide-wire connector, visible wire, and splices. Positioning signal, map, base-station status, firmware or app instructions, and obstruction of the positioning antenna.
Can a wire-break detector help? Yes, when compatible with the installed wire and connector system. No; there is no perimeter wire to test.
Typical repair path Locate and repair the break, correct routing, or replace a damaged connector. Recheck the digital boundary, positioning setup, and manufacturer-specific calibration or service steps.
What to tell support Exact alert, station indicator, loop or guide-wire tests, and break location. Exact alert, map position, positioning status, app events, and when the virtual boundary was created or changed.

Do not follow a physical-wire repair guide for a virtual-boundary model. Conversely, do not erase a digital map when the mower is actually reporting a station power or physical-loop fault.

How to repair a confirmed physical-loop break

  1. Turn off the mower and isolate the station. Follow the owner’s and installation manuals for mains isolation and safe handling.
  2. Confirm the failed section. Use the half-loop method or a compatible detector instead of digging randomly along the entire perimeter.
  3. Expose enough wire to work without tension. Avoid nicking the insulation with a spade or knife. If the wire is cut in several places, identify all damaged sections before reconnecting.
  4. Cut back damaged ends cleanly. Leave enough slack to prevent the splice from being pulled when the wire is reburied or repinned.
  5. Use specified wire and connectors. Match the conductor and connector type required by the mower manufacturer. Make the splice weather-resistant as instructed.
  6. Restore the wire path. Rebury or repin it at the installation depth and spacing specified for the model. Keep it away from newly created edges, slopes, or metal structures.
  7. Power the station and test. Check the indicator, run the model’s loop-signal test or new-signal procedure if required, and observe a complete boundary departure and return.

If the indicator still reports a fault, the splice did not solve the electrical problem, or the mower loses signal after testing, stop digging and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

Common mistakes that make the fault harder to find

  • Replacing the entire wire immediately. A loose terminal or damaged splice may be the only fault.
  • Assuming a normal station light proves the whole installation is good. Indicator meanings differ, and an intermittent fault may not appear while the mower is parked.
  • Changing several things at once. Move one wire section or correct one connector, then retest so you know which change mattered.
  • Testing on wet grass and concluding the motor has failed. Let the lawn dry and repeat the route test.
  • Using a universal clearance or slope number. Installation geometry is model-specific; the Husqvarna UK 35 cm guidance is limited to that context.
  • Handling the mower while it can start. Use the prescribed shutdown and blade-safety procedure every time.
  • Resetting after a storm without checking electronics. Surge damage can persist even when the loop and connectors appear intact.

When to contact support or service

Escalate when the station has correct power and connections but the mower still reports a loop fault; when the signal disappears only under certain operating conditions; when the same wheel or motor warning returns after clearing the route; or when the fault followed lightning, flooding, or other electrical stress. Provide the model and software version if shown, exact alert text, station indicator state, stopping location, weather, recent landscaping, and every test result. Include photographs of connectors, splices, and the installation area if the support channel accepts them.

Service is also the safer choice when a buried wire must be traced near electrical or irrigation infrastructure, when the mower’s housing or blade assembly is damaged, or when you cannot isolate power confidently. Manufacturer support can confirm whether your model uses a physical loop, a guide wire, or a virtual boundary and can supply the correct repair procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preventing repeat stops

  • Walk the mowing area at the start of the season and remove toys, branches, stones, and loose cables.
  • Keep grass within the mower’s recommended height and avoid scheduling cutting when the lawn is saturated with dew or rain.
  • After aerating, edging, planting, or installing fencing, inspect the boundary path and station terminals.
  • Keep a simple map of wire splices, island loops, guide-wire joins, and areas where the mower has previously stopped.
  • Check that pins remain seated and that erosion has not exposed or shifted the wire.
  • Use the model’s current installation manual for obstacle clearances, guide-wire routing, and slope limits.
  • Save the exact alert and location whenever a fault occurs; repeated location data helps distinguish route geometry from an electrical break.

The fastest diagnosis is usually systematic: identify the alert, separate traction from signal symptoms, verify station power, inspect the route and accessible connections, then isolate a suspected wire section before repairing it. If the installation passes those checks but the mower still cannot hold its boundary or move reliably, manufacturer or authorized service support is the appropriate next step.
