Cold can also reduce the useful energy available from a lithium-ion battery, but there is no verified robot-dog-specific cold percentage that can be applied to every model.
For a Unitree Go2, the manufacturer’s clearest baseline is about 1–2 hours while alternating between no-load static standing and upright walking. That figure is not a promise for running, hills, rough terrain, carrying equipment or another robot model. The reliable way to troubleshoot a sharp outdoor drop is to record the conditions, compare matched routes, reduce avoidable workload, inspect wear points and escalate only when the evidence still suggests a battery or hardware fault.

What actually changes outdoors
“It lasts less outside” describes an observation, not a diagnosis. Two runs can have the same elapsed time but radically different motor work. An indoor floor may allow steady, upright walking with few corrections. An outdoor path may require torque to climb, braking to descend, balance corrections on rocks and repeated changes in leg position. The battery supplies that extra mechanical and control work.
The Unitree Go2 manual specifically identifies faster walking, long periods of posture adjustment, bent legs, running with a load, low body height, slopes and undulating terrain as conditions that reduce endurance. Those factors can overlap: a robot carrying a camera while moving quickly over a slope with a low body posture is not performing the same job as a lightly loaded robot walking upright on a flat floor.

Terrain, traction and slopes
Inclines require the motors to produce more force, while descents can require active braking and balance control. Uneven ground makes the robot continually redistribute weight. Poor traction can also cause slipping or falls, so a route that looks short on a map may be electrically demanding in practice. The Go2 manual warns about this traction risk and links slopes and undulating surfaces with lower endurance. Read the Unitree Go2 User Manual for the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
Speed, gait and posture
Speed is not the only variable. A gait that includes frequent acceleration, stopping or high steps can consume more energy than a smooth, moderate walk. Holding a low body height or keeping the knees bent increases motor load. Unitree states: “Lower body height and more knee bends place a greater burden on the motors and therefore increase power consumption significantly earlier and are accompanied by motor heating”. Repeated posture adjustments, even when the robot appears to be standing still, also draw power.
Payload and accessories
Any carried load increases the force needed to accelerate and stabilize the body. The manual calls out running with a load in particular. A payload can include a mounted camera, lighting, a communications device or a test fixture, not just something held in the robot’s gripper. Compare runs with the same equipment attached; otherwise, a route comparison can wrongly blame the weather or surface.

Low temperature can reduce the useful energy available from lithium-ion cells and can affect vehicle performance generally. A U.S. Department of Energy technical presentation states, “Useful energy from the battery decreases with decrease in temperature.” That is a general battery observation, not a Go2 runtime chart. The available Go2 documentation does not establish a robot-specific temperature threshold or a dependable percentage reduction, so do not convert a generic cold-weather graph into a precise prediction for your robot. See the U.S. Department of Energy presentation on automotive lithium-ion battery cooling requirements for the general mechanism.
How long should a Unitree Go2 battery last?
The Go2 manual says: “The rated endurance of the robot is about 1-2 hours with no load static standing and upright walking alternately.” This is the most clearly qualified baseline available for a Go2. It applies to the stated no-load, standing-and-upright-walking pattern; it does not define a universal outdoor runtime and does not transfer to other quadruped robots.
Unitree’s current product material contains more than one endurance statement, including an approximately 2–4-hour figure in one section and an about 1–2-hour figure in the battery/specification section. Treat runtime as configuration- and operating-condition-dependent rather than choosing the largest number as a guarantee. The manual’s explicit operating condition is the safer reference when planning a test.

Capacity alone does not determine field runtime. A higher-capacity pack may support longer operation, but the robot’s load, gait, terrain, temperature and battery condition still matter. Never fit a pack solely because its connector appears similar.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
Use the following sequence to distinguish normal workload-related drain from a possible battery or hardware problem. It is a practical comparison method based on the variables named in the Go2 manual, not a manufacturer-approved laboratory test.
-
Record every condition
For each run, write down the start time, elapsed operating time and battery indication. Also record ambient temperature, route surface, slope, loose or wet sections, speed, gait, payload, body height and any extended standing or posture adjustments. Note whether the robot was repeatedly stopping, turning or recovering from slips. Without this log, “outdoor” combines too many variables to identify a cause.
-
Make the comparison like-for-like
If the robot can be operated safely, choose a short, repeatable flat-ground route and compare it with the outdoor activity. Keep the speed, gait, payload and body posture as similar as practical. Use the same starting battery indication and record elapsed time and the indication at the end. A flat route versus a hill, or upright walking versus low-body running, is not a controlled comparison.
-
Reduce avoidable workload
On uneven ground, slow down and choose a surface with reliable traction. Avoid sustained low-body or bent-leg operation unless it is necessary for the task. Remove nonessential payloads and avoid vigorous, repeated posture changes. Unitree links these behaviors with increased motor burden, earlier power consumption and motor heating. If the robot begins slipping, stop rather than trying to compensate with more speed.

Inspect the feet after rough-ground use
For Go2, examine each foot end for visible abrasion, cracks or other damage. The manual treats the foot end as a consumable and recommends replacement when abrasion, damage or walking noise is evident. A worn foot is a traction and maintenance issue; replacing it does not eliminate the normal energy cost of hills, soft ground or a heavy load. Do not use a damaged foot as evidence that the battery itself has failed.

-
Separate cold from workload
Repeat the comparison when conditions are more similar, if practical. A cold-day run may combine lower battery performance with frozen, wet or uneven surfaces that demand more balance corrections. Because no Go2-specific cold threshold or runtime percentage is established here, describe the result as a temperature-related possibility rather than assigning a numerical penalty.
-
Confirm the battery version
Go2 uses standard BT2-05 and long-endurance BT2-06 battery versions. Identify the version installed before ordering a replacement or comparing specifications. Unitree’s official Go2 battery shop listing is the relevant product reference, but listings and regional availability can change. A battery intended for a different Go2 version may not be an appropriate substitute.
-
Escalate persistent abnormalities
Contact Unitree technical support when matched-condition runs show a persistent, unexplained runtime change, the battery indication behaves inconsistently, or the pack is visibly damaged or unusually hot. The manual and battery documentation describe battery-management protections, but they do not authorize users to open, modify or rebuild the pack. Keep the robot, charger and battery information available for support, including the exact model/version and your condition log.

Build a useful runtime log
A simple log prevents assumptions and makes a support conversation much more productive. Give each run a name, such as “flat indoor walk,” “short grass,” or “rocky slope.” Record the battery indication before starting, the time the robot begins moving, pauses for standing, and stops. Note whether the reading dropped steadily or fell abruptly. An abrupt change may be an indication or connection issue, but runtime alone cannot identify the cause.
Keep the route length and number of laps consistent. If the robot must turn around, use the same turning points. Mark accessories and payload by name and approximate mass if known. Record whether the body was upright, crouched or repeatedly changing height. Write down unusual sounds, foot slippage, motor heat, unexpected stops and any warning shown by the controller. These observations help separate normal energy demand from a mechanical or electrical symptom.
Normal variation versus a possible fault
Normal variation usually follows the workload: the robot lasts longer on a firm, level route with an upright, moderate gait and no extra equipment, then shorter on a hill, loose surface or low-body task. A possible fault is more concerning when the same robot, battery, route, gait, payload and temperature produce a persistent change, especially if the battery indication is erratic or the pack becomes unusually hot.

This distinction is not a pass/fail test. Battery age, charging history and the robot’s control software can affect behavior, and the cited Go2 documents do not provide a universal failure threshold. Treat a repeatable change as a reason to contact model-specific support, not as proof that a particular cell or circuit has failed.

| Runtime falls mainly on hills, loose ground or undulating paths | Terrain, traction and balance work are plausible causes | Repeat on flatter, firmer ground at the same speed and payload |
| Runtime falls when the robot is low, crouched or frequently correcting posture | Motor load from posture and repeated adjustments is implicated | Use an upright, steady gait where the task permits and monitor for heating |
| Runtime falls only when equipment or cargo is attached | Payload and acceleration demand are contributing | Remove nonessential load and compare with identical accessories |
| Runtime changes on cold days but the route also changes | Temperature and workload are confounded | Log both variables and avoid claiming a precise cold-weather percentage |
| Runtime remains abnormal on a repeatable, matched route | A battery, charging or robot fault becomes more plausible, but cannot be diagnosed from runtime alone | Verify BT2-05 or BT2-06 and contact model-specific technical support |
| Walking noise, visibly abraded feet or damaged foot ends appear after rough use | There is a documented consumable wear issue | Replace the affected foot end according to Unitree guidance; do not treat this as a battery upgrade |
Battery replacement: when it is and is not the answer
A replacement is reasonable only when the installed pack is the correct Go2 version and a persistent, matched-condition comparison points toward a battery problem. It is not a cure for the extra energy required by a slope, low posture, fast gait or heavy payload. Buying a higher-capacity pack to compensate for a demanding route may change endurance, but it does not remove the mechanical workload or the need for safe operation.
Use the model and battery identifiers to distinguish BT2-05 from BT2-06 before purchasing. Check the current Unitree listing and support guidance rather than relying on a marketplace description. Unitree’s official battery page lists the 29.6 V rating, 33.6 V charge-limit voltage and the 8,000 mAh/236.8 Wh standard rating; those figures describe the specified pack and are not proof that every similarly labeled battery is compatible.
Operating practices that preserve useful runtime
- Plan routes with firm traction and fewer steep or highly irregular sections when endurance matters.
- Use a moderate, steady gait instead of repeated sprinting, abrupt stops and unnecessary turns.
- Keep the robot at its normal upright body height when the task does not require a low posture.
- Remove nonessential payloads before a long run and record any accessory that remains attached.
- Stop when traction becomes unreliable; a slip or fall can damage the robot and make the energy comparison meaningless.
- Allow the robot to cool if motors are heating during sustained bent-leg or low-body work, following the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
- Inspect foot ends after abrasive or rocky routes and address visible damage before the next comparison.
- Keep a simple log so a battery indication can be compared with elapsed time under the same conditions.
What the available evidence cannot tell you
There is no standardized robot-dog outdoor test in the cited material and no cross-brand runtime comparison. The available sources do not establish a universal outdoor-versus-indoor drain percentage, a Go2-specific cold-weather percentage or a single runtime threshold that proves a battery is defective. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Unitree documents several operating conditions that reduce Go2 endurance, while general lithium-ion evidence explains why cold can reduce useful energy. A controlled, matched-condition log is needed before treating a change as abnormal.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Stop operation and seek model-specific support if the battery or robot is visibly damaged, the pack becomes unusually hot, the robot behaves erratically, or the runtime remains markedly different after you have matched route, gait, speed, payload, posture and temperature as closely as practical. Do not open the battery enclosure, bypass its protection circuitry or combine packs from different versions. Provide support with the robot version, BT2-05 or BT2-06 identification, route log, temperatures, battery indications and any foot or motor symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my robot dog battery die so quickly outside?
Outside is usually a change in workload rather than a single battery penalty. Slopes, loose or uneven ground, faster movement, low body height, bent knees, repeated posture corrections and payloads all make the motors work harder. Cold can also reduce useful lithium-ion energy. Compare a matched flat-ground run before concluding that the battery has failed.

How long should a Unitree Go2 battery last?
The Go2 User Manual gives a rated endurance of about 1–2 hours with no-load static standing and upright walking alternately. That baseline does not guarantee the same time while running, climbing, carrying equipment or operating on rough ground. Unitree product material also shows an approximately 2–4-hour statement, so treat runtime as configuration- and condition-dependent.
Does cold weather have a fixed percentage effect on Go2 runtime?
No robot-specific percentage or temperature threshold is established in the cited Go2 documentation. General U.S. Department of Energy material states that useful battery energy decreases as temperature decreases, but that general relationship should not be converted into a precise Go2 estimate.
Should I buy the larger Go2 battery if outdoor runtime is short?
Only after checking the battery version and confirming that a persistent, matched-condition comparison points to capacity or battery condition. A higher-capacity pack may extend operation, but it does not remove the energy cost of hills, low posture, fast gait or payload. Confirm compatibility with Unitree rather than relying on a similar connector or marketplace description.

What should I write down during a battery test?
Record starting and ending battery indications, elapsed operating time, temperature, route surface, slope, speed, gait, body height, payload, accessories, pauses, posture changes, slips, unusual sounds and motor heat. Repeat the same route and settings so outdoor conditions can be compared meaningfully.
Can worn foot ends cause fast battery drain?
Worn or damaged Go2 foot ends are a documented maintenance and traction issue, especially after rough-ground use. They can contribute to slipping or walking noise, but replacing them does not remove the normal energy demand of slopes, soft ground or a heavy load. Inspect and replace them according to Unitree guidance when abrasion or damage is visible.
When should I stop using the robot and contact support?
Stop and seek model-specific support if the pack is visibly damaged, unusually hot, the robot behaves erratically, the battery indication is inconsistent or runtime remains abnormal on a repeatable route with matched speed, gait, payload, posture and temperature. Do not open or rebuild the battery pack.
The Bottom Line
Outdoor drain is usually a workload story: terrain, traction, speed, posture, payload and temperature change how hard the robot works. For a Go2, use the manual’s roughly 1–2-hour no-load baseline only as a reference, run a matched-condition comparison, inspect foot wear and verify the BT2-05 or BT2-06 version before treating the result as a battery fault.
