Why a Retro Computer Won’t Display on a Modern Monitor—and How to Fix It

A retro computer can have a connector that seems to fit and still produce no picture because the monitor does not accept the computer’s video signal. The mismatch may be the signal format, scan rate, sync, cable wiring, or converter direction—not a faulty screen. Identify the computer’s actual output and the monitor’s supported inputs before buying an adapter or scaler.

Why the computer and monitor may not be compatible

A video connector carries a signal; it does not guarantee that the connected display can interpret it. Older computers may output composite, S-Video, component, RGB, or a machine-specific format at a scan rate that a modern display does not support directly. The signal’s sync arrangement and regional timing can matter too.

For example, some retro systems output 15 kHz video. An ordinary VGA monitor designed for higher horizontal scan rates may not accept that signal directly. A line doubler or scaler can convert a supported input to an output format the monitor accepts, but both ends of the chain have to be compatible: the converter must accept the computer’s signal, and the monitor must accept the converter’s output.

Connector shape alone is not enough to identify a signal. A VGA-shaped connector, for instance, does not tell you whether a particular setup has the sync type or timing required by a given input or cable.

What to check before changing equipment

  1. Identify the computer and its output. Find the exact model and check its manual or reliable model-specific documentation for the video connector and signal. Do not assume the signal from the connector’s appearance.
  2. Establish the signal details. Determine whether the output is composite, S-Video, component, RGB, VGA/RGBHV, or another format. Where documentation provides them, note the scan rate and sync arrangement.
  3. Check the monitor’s manual. Confirm that the exact input supports the computer’s signal format and timing. A matching socket does not prove signal compatibility.
  4. Verify the cable and its direction. Check its pinout, sync handling, and whether it performs conversion or merely routes a signal. A passive cable does not upscale video.
  5. Rule out basic setup problems. Select the monitor’s correct input, confirm that both devices are powered, and check that the computer starts. If possible, test with a known-good cable and a display or converter known to accept that signal.
  6. Match a converter to both devices. Check the converter’s supported input format, sync, and source timings, then check whether the monitor accepts its output mode. Labels such as “VGA to HDMI” alone do not establish that the particular signal will work.

Which connection path should you use?

The right path depends on the computer’s output and the display you want to use. The options below are distinct approaches, not universal compatibility guarantees.

Path What it does What to verify
Direct connection to a compatible display A display with an input that accepts the computer’s signal can show it without an added scaler. OmaCRT’s guidance for its documented 15 kHz setup calls for compatible 15 kHz input and RGB support, and says a standard VGA monitor is unsuitable for that signal. Confirm the exact display accepts the source format, scan rate, and sync. OmaCRT also notes that composite and S-Video carry less image detail than RGB.
Line doubler such as OSSC The OSSC Quick Start Guide (Revision 1B) describes converting 15 kHz retro video to 31 kHz and outputting HDMI/DVI. Its guide describes input lag as “only a few microseconds”; that is a product-guide claim, not an independent measurement. Check source wiring and output-mode support. The guide says HDMI/DVI displays can be used in many cases but warns that compatibility cannot be guaranteed for every display.
Scaler/processor such as RetroTINK-4K RetroTINK lists HD15/VGA inputs for RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB, YPbPr, S-Video, and composite, and SCART inputs for RGBS, RGsB, YPbPr, S-Video, and composite. Its instructions connect the processor to a modern display by digital video cable. Match the computer’s format and sync to the specific input and cable, then check that the display accepts the processor’s output. The listed inputs do not guarantee every computer-and-cable combination.
Computer-specific internal or digital conversion For Amiga systems, a September 2026 comparison describes RGB2HDMI, GBS-Control, and Indivision as different conversion routes with different installation and compatibility trade-offs. Check that the option applies to the exact Amiga model, and account for installation requirements and monitor compatibility. These Amiga-specific options are not general recommendations for unrelated computer families.
Correct or replace the cable A cable can solve a problem caused by incorrect wiring, pinout, direction, or sync handling. It cannot, by itself, turn an unsupported scan rate into one the display accepts. Confirm the cable is designed for the computer’s output and the intended input. For example, RetroTINK’s HD15-to-SCART cable is directional, requires valid composite sync on HD15 pin 13, and has no sync combiner; its specifications say it does not convert high-resolution VGA to standard-definition TV.

  • Input format and sync: Does the device accept the computer’s actual signal and sync arrangement?
  • Source and output timings: Are the computer’s scan rate and the converter’s output mode supported?
  • Monitor support: Does the monitor’s manual list that output format or mode for the selected input?
  • Installation: Is the solution external, or does it require an internal installation or modification?
  • Image processing and latency: Does the device’s processing suit how you plan to use the computer? Treat product-guide latency claims as claims from that guide unless independently measured.
  • Cabling and audio: Is the correct cable or sync adapter required, and does your setup need a separate audio connection?

If there is still no picture

Use the mismatch you found to narrow the next test instead of buying another adapter at random.

  • No signal on a direct connection: Recheck the monitor’s supported timings and the computer’s output standard. A display intended for higher scan rates may reject a 15 kHz source.
  • No signal through a converter: Verify the converter accepts the input format and sync, check cable direction and pinout, and select a supported output mode for the display.
  • The cable fits but the image is absent: Check whether it is a passive cable, whether its wiring matches the devices, and whether it handles the required sync. Physical fit does not establish conversion or compatibility.
  • The picture works on another display or converter: That test makes a source failure less likely; focus next on the original display’s input support or the compatibility of the signal chain.
  • The computer produces no picture in a known-compatible setup: Check that it starts and consider a fault in the computer or its video output rather than assuming the monitor is the cause.

Because compatibility varies by computer, regional standard, converter, cable, and monitor, a specific recommendation requires the exact computer and display models. Consult their manuals or a model-specific compatibility list before committing to a setup.
