A refrigerator can shut down a portable power station because its compressor needs a short, powerful burst of electricity when it starts. That startup surge may be several times higher than the refrigerator’s normal running demand. If the surge exceeds the station’s inverter output or surge rating, overload protection disconnects the AC outlet.
Other causes include too many devices sharing the station, a nearly empty battery, low input voltage, overheating, restricted ventilation, or an appliance-side fault. The quickest diagnosis is to confirm whether the station’s AC output actually turned off, test the refrigerator by itself, compare both running and startup requirements with the station’s ratings, and then follow the exact manuals for those models.

What happens when a refrigerator starts
A refrigerator compressor is a motor load. Once the thermostat calls for cooling, the compressor must accelerate from a complete stop. During that brief starting period it draws more current than it does while running steadily. The portable station has to supply that burst through its inverter, not merely provide enough watt-hours in its battery.

An inverter owner’s manual hosted by Farnell gives a different rule of thumb: induction motors may require two to six times their wattage rating to start, and its sizing chart uses a factor of five for compressor-based refrigerators and freezers. Those figures apply to that manual’s sizing method; they are not universal specifications.
If the compressor’s instantaneous demand is above the station’s available continuous or surge capability, the station may interpret the event as an overload and cut AC output. A refrigerator can therefore appear compatible when you look only at its running watts but still fail at the moment the compressor starts.
Watt-hours and watts answer different questions
Portable stations are usually described with at least two different electrical figures:
- Watts (W): the power the inverter can deliver at a moment in time. Continuous output indicates the sustained load it can support; surge or peak output indicates how it handles short starting events.
- Watt-hours (Wh): the amount of stored energy available over time. This helps estimate runtime but does not prove that the inverter can start a motor.
A station may contain enough stored energy to run a refrigerator for several hours yet lack the inverter headroom to start its compressor. The reverse is also possible: an inverter may start the refrigerator successfully, but the battery may not last for the desired period. Check both sets of specifications separately.

Use the symptom to narrow the cause
| Observed behavior | Likely explanations | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| AC output trips immediately when the compressor starts | Startup surge exceeds the station’s capability, or another load is contributing to the peak. | Disconnect every other device. Compare the refrigerator’s documented startup demand with the station’s continuous and surge ratings. |
| The refrigerator works alone but trips the station after other devices are connected | Combined running watts or overlapping startup surges exceed available output. | Calculate the total load and start high-power appliances one at a time. |
| The station runs for a while, becomes hot, then shuts down | Overtemperature protection may have activated because of restricted airflow, a hot environment, or sustained load. | Clear the vents, move the station out of direct heat, check ambient conditions, and read the model-specific cooling and restart instructions. |
| Shutdown occurs as the battery approaches empty | Low-battery or low-input-voltage protection may be operating normally. | Check the battery percentage, warning icon, and any displayed voltage or error message. Recharge before retesting. |
| The compressor stops but the station’s AC indicator remains on | Normal thermostat cycling or an appliance-side problem, rather than a station shutdown. | Confirm that AC output is still present. A thermostat normally starts and stops the compressor to maintain temperature. |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a diagnosis of an unseen setup. Error labels, thresholds and recovery procedures differ between stations.
How to check compatibility before running the refrigerator
Find the refrigerator’s actual electrical information
Read the refrigerator nameplate and owner’s manual for rated watts, running amps, starting amps or startup watts. If no starting figure is listed, ask the refrigerator manufacturer for the compressor’s starting requirement, as Jackery recommends. Do not substitute a generic multiplier when a model-specific figure is available.
Some nameplates list volts and amps rather than watts. Multiplying those values gives an approximate running VA or watts, but it may not reveal the compressor’s brief inrush current. A service document or manufacturer response is more useful for startup compatibility.
Check both station output ratings
Record the station’s maximum continuous AC output and its stated surge or peak output, including the duration of that surge if the manufacturer provides it. Compare those figures with the refrigerator’s starting requirement, then include every other device plugged into the station.

Do not infer inverter capability from the battery’s Wh capacity. The inverter rating governs whether the compressor can start; the battery capacity helps determine how long the load can run.
Account for simultaneous loads
Lights, chargers, freezers, pumps, kettles and other appliances consume output that the refrigerator may need during startup. Jackery’s compressor-load guidance warns that even when rated power appears within range, a startup surge can exceed the limit and trigger an error or shutdown. Where possible, operate high-power appliances one at a time and avoid starting two motor loads simultaneously.
A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm what actually stopped. When the refrigerator goes quiet, check whether the station’s AC indicator, outlet display or connected load meter also turned off. A thermostat-controlled compressor stopping with AC still available is normal cycling, not proof of an overload.
- Write down the exact models. Record the refrigerator model, station model, battery percentage, displayed warning or error code, room temperature and the moment the shutdown occurs. Manuals are model-specific, so these details matter.
- Remove all other loads. Unplug chargers and appliances from the station, then test the refrigerator alone. This isolation step shows whether combined load is involved; it does not by itself prove which component is defective.
- Compare startup and continuous figures. Use the refrigerator’s documented starting requirement and the station’s continuous and surge ratings. If the refrigerator’s startup figure is unavailable, obtain it from the manufacturer instead of assuming that its running wattage is sufficient.
- Check battery condition. A low state of charge can cause the station to reduce or disconnect output. Recharge it and repeat the test only after the station indicates that it is ready.
- Check temperature and airflow. Leave clearance around intake and exhaust vents, keep the station away from direct sun and heat sources, and make sure vents are not covered by bedding, luggage or dust. Sustained high load in a warm location can activate thermal protection.
- Read the station’s protection messages. Distinguish overload, low battery or low input voltage, and overtemperature indications. The Promate 120 operator manual, for example, lists those conditions separately for its own model.
- Use the manufacturer’s restart procedure. Remove the cause shown by the warning and follow the exact manual. An inverter manual hosted by Farnell instructs users to remove an overload and wait at least three minutes before switching on again. That interval must not be applied automatically to another station; Promate specifies different model-dependent directions.
- Stop repeated failed starts. If the station remains on but the refrigerator hums, repeatedly clicks, fails to start or stops abnormally, consult the refrigerator service manual and arrange qualified appliance service. Repeatedly cycling a struggling compressor can worsen the fault.
Normal compressor cycling versus a power-station shutdown
Refrigerators do not run their compressors continuously. A thermostat generally controls when the compressor starts and stops, allowing the cabinet to remain within its target temperature range. During normal cycling, the station’s AC outlet remains enabled and other connected devices continue operating.

What the protection conditions mean
Overload or starting surge
This is most likely when the AC output cuts out exactly as the compressor starts. The station may be undersized for the refrigerator’s starting demand, or other loads may be consuming the remaining surge capacity. Remove the other loads and compare the documented figures before trying again.
Overtemperature
A station can shut down after operating successfully if its inverter or battery becomes too hot. Poor ventilation, high ambient temperature and sustained heavy load all increase thermal stress. Let the unit cool according to its own manual; do not rely on a reset time taken from another model.
Low battery or low input voltage
Near depletion, the station may protect its battery by disabling AC output. A low-voltage warning can also arise from the station’s input or internal battery condition. Check the displayed state and recharge before judging compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAppliance-side fault
If the station does not report overload and AC remains available, the refrigerator may have a supply, voltage, relay, thermal-protector or compressor problem. The Midea maintenance service manual for a 45-bottle dual-zone wine cooler distinguishes ordinary thermostat operation from these electrical and compressor faults. Service personnel should assess persistent symptoms.

Choosing a station for a refrigerator
Evaluate the following independently:
- Continuous AC output: enough for the refrigerator’s running demand plus other equipment you intend to use.
- Surge capability: sufficient for the documented compressor startup demand, with a stated surge duration that covers the starting event.
- Model compatibility: confirmation from the refrigerator manufacturer when startup watts are not printed on the nameplate.
- Battery capacity: enough Wh for the required runtime after allowing for inverter losses and cycling.
- Protection behavior: clear overload, low-battery and overtemperature indications, plus usable recovery instructions.
- Operating environment: ventilation and temperature limits that fit the intended location.
A refrigerator with a documented lower startup requirement or fewer simultaneous AC loads may solve the problem without changing every part of the setup. Do not assume that an unspecified soft-start accessory is universally compatible; its suitability depends on the refrigerator, station and wiring.
Model-specific figures you should not generalize
The Promate 120 manual lists a 200 W AC product limit and model-specific battery-voltage figures. Those values apply only to that named station and are not recommended thresholds for other products.
The Farnell-hosted inverter manual’s two-to-six-times motor-start guidance and factor-of-five refrigerator sizing recommendation describe that manual’s method. Jackery’s three-to-seven-times refrigerator guidance, updated July 2, 2026, likewise describes a broad range and says the exact demand varies by model. No particular refrigerator’s measured startup wattage is established here.
When to stop troubleshooting
Do not declare the station defective after one shutdown. First eliminate extra loads, recharge the battery, improve airflow and check the displayed protection condition. If the refrigerator repeatedly fails with the station alone despite adequate documented output, or if the station trips with several known-good loads, contact the relevant manufacturer or a qualified technician. Persistent compressor clicking, humming, burning odor, damaged cords or repeated thermal shutdowns warrant immediate disconnection and professional assessment.
The practical rule is simple: match the refrigerator’s starting demand to the station’s inverter surge capability, then verify continuous output, battery capacity and operating conditions separately. A successful runtime test with the refrigerator alone is useful evidence, but it does not replace the ratings and instructions for the exact models.
