A jailbroken PS5 still does not natively understand PlayStation 2 game discs. The standard system software explicitly excludes PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 software from disc playback. Jailbreaking only creates a route for homebrew; you still need a compatible PS2 emulator, firmware, BIOS and game input. A recent PS5SX2 build has reportedly added physical PS2 DVD support, but that feature is separate from Sony’s software, does not cover PS2 CD titles, and is not a guarantee that every disc or console will work.
The direct answer
If you insert an original PS2 disc into an ordinary PS5, the console may recognize that a DVD is present, but it cannot launch the game as PS2 software. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 instruction manual states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” The PS5’s ability to read DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW media describes the optical hardware, not native support for the game format recorded on that media.

A jailbreak does not remove that limitation by itself. It lets compatible homebrew run, including PS5SX2, a native PS5 port of the PCSX2 emulator. PS5SX2 has its own requirements and compatibility boundaries. Its project documentation calls for a jailbroken PS5, a helper payload using kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, a user-supplied PS2 BIOS and user-supplied game input. The project does not include BIOS files, games or keys.
On October 11, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that PS5SX2 had added support for physical PS2 DVD discs, including discs in the built-in drive and in supported external USB optical drives. That is a recent emulator feature, not an official PS5 capability. The report also says PS2 games released on CD cannot be read by the PS5 optical drive. Build-specific instructions therefore matter: the project’s general setup section still describes image files as the normal input.

What the PS5 can and cannot do natively

This distinction explains a common misleading symptom: a PS2 disc can appear as an optical disc in the normal interface without producing a playable game tile. The console has identified the disc medium, but its operating system has no native PS2 runtime to start.
Jailbreak, emulator and game input are different layers
What the jailbreak changes
A jailbreak can allow unsigned or homebrew software to run on particular PS5 firmware versions. It does not turn Sony’s built-in game loader into a PS2 loader, and it does not make every jailbreakable firmware interchangeable. PS5SX2 documents specific tested firmware and console combinations; an unlisted firmware is explicitly untried, so its behavior should be treated as unknown rather than assumed compatible.

What PS5SX2 supplies
PS5SX2 is an emulator: it recreates the PS2’s processor, graphics, sound and other systems in software. The project documentation lists a jailbroken PS5, the required payload and mounting components, a PS2 BIOS and a game input. The usual image formats named by the project include ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO. A BIOS dump or game image is not bundled with the emulator, so the setup cannot be completed by installing the application alone.
PCSX2’s own documentation explains the same basic model for PS2 emulation: the emulator needs a BIOS and an original-game input. This article does not make a legal determination about copying or using those files; use only media and files you are entitled to use and follow the laws that apply where you live.

Why a disc can fail even after the emulator is installed
- The installed PS5SX2 build may expect an image file rather than a physical disc.
- The required BIOS, payload or mounting component may be missing or loaded in the wrong order.
- The PS5 firmware or console model may not be among the project’s tested combinations.
- The title may be incompatible with the current emulator build.
- The disc may be a CD-based PS2 title, which the PS5 optical drive cannot read according to current reporting.
- The disc or optical drive may have a separate physical fault.
What changed with physical PS2 DVD support
DVD support is a project feature, not Sony backward compatibility
The October 2026 report describes PS5SX2 reading physical PS2 DVDs from either the internal drive or an external USB optical drive. This can remove the need to make an image for a supported DVD title, but only when the installed build contains the feature and the rest of the emulator setup is correct. It does not alter the PS5’s normal system software, and Sony does not advertise PS2 disc playback as a PS5 function.
Because the feature is new, check the release notes and active setup instructions for the exact build on your console. The main project instructions still center on game images, so a guide written for an earlier build may tell you to prepare an ISO even when a later build can inspect a DVD directly.

Why PS2 CDs remain a hard stop
Some PS2 games were distributed on CDs rather than DVDs. The current reporting identifies CD-based PS2 titles as unsupported because the PS5 optical drive cannot read that format for this feature. A clean CD, a different BIOS or a higher-resolution setting cannot overcome a media-format limitation in the drive. For those games, the practical choices are a supported image-based input or original PS2 hardware.

Compatibility depends on more than the disc
PS5SX2’s test information is useful for narrowing expectations, not for promising a result. The project reports an early test set in which 108 games had been started as of its September 2026 testing note. It expressly says that list is not a compatibility guarantee and that behavior can change between builds. A game that starts may still have graphics, sound, timing, save-state or controller problems.

The project also reports up to 6× resolution scaling. That is a rendering option, not evidence that a disc will boot. Start with default settings while diagnosing launch problems; add enhancements only after the title runs reliably.

Step-by-step checks before changing anything
- Identify the media. Determine whether the title is on a DVD or CD. A PS2 CD cannot be made readable by changing emulator graphics settings.
- Record the environment. Write down the PS5 model, system firmware, PS5SX2 build, game title and region, and whether you are using the internal or USB optical drive.
- Check the project’s tested information. Treat a listed firmware and console as evidence of testing, not a guarantee. Treat an unlisted combination as untried.
- Verify the emulator prerequisites. Confirm the jailbreak payload using kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, the user-supplied PS2 BIOS and the required game input are installed and loaded as the current instructions specify.
- Confirm the input path. If your build’s instructions describe ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO files, test with a correctly prepared image. If the build advertises physical DVD support, confirm that the feature is enabled and that the disc is inserted in the expected drive.
- Try a known-good supported input. A working image can separate an emulator setup problem from a disc or optical-drive problem. Do not treat one successful game as proof that every title works.
- Keep settings conservative. Use default resolution and compatibility settings first. The reported 6× scaling capability is optional and cannot repair a failed boot.
- Inspect the disc. Hold it by the edge, clean it with a soft cloth and check for deep scratches, warping or a label that is lifting. Do not use abrasive materials.
- Test other supported media. Sony recommends trying another supported game, Blu-ray or DVD. If those also fail, follow the console’s Safe Mode disc guidance or service instructions.
- Separate the conclusions. If supported PS5/PS4 media works but one PS2 title does not, the result points toward format, build or title compatibility rather than proving a defective drive.

Choose the emulator route when you already have a compatible jailbroken system and are willing to manage firmware, BIOS, input and per-title compatibility. Choose original PS2 hardware when direct physical-disc playback, especially for CD-based titles, is the priority.
What not to infer from a failed launch
- A PS2 disc failing in the normal PS5 interface does not show that the optical drive is broken; native PS2 playback is unsupported.
- A DVD being visible to the PS5 does not mean the game data is executable by Sony’s system software.
- A jailbreak does not imply that every PS5 firmware can run PS5SX2.
- A game listed among 108 early tests is not guaranteed to work on your console or build.
- A successful DVD launch does not imply that PS2 CDs will work.
- Cleaning a disc can address dirt, but it cannot add PS2 support or change a CD-drive limitation.
Bottom line for a jailbroken PS5 owner
The normal PS5 cannot play a PS2 game directly from its disc. PS5SX2 provides a homebrew emulation path, and current October 2026 reporting says newer builds can read physical PS2 DVDs. That path remains conditional on the exact firmware, console, build, BIOS, payload, game and disc. PS2 CD titles are outside the reported physical-disc support because the PS5 optical drive cannot read them. When other supported discs fail too, use Sony’s optical-drive troubleshooting; when only a PS2 title fails, first check the emulator’s documented input method and compatibility rather than assuming the drive is defective.
