A process exiting with code 0 means that process reported success; it does not prove that the larger task succeeded. The key is to identify which layer returned the code, then check whether failures were propagated and whether the intended result actually happened.
What does exit code 0 actually mean?
Exit status belongs to a command or process boundary. In Bash, zero conventionally indicates success and a nonzero status indicates failure, but the status is the command’s report—not an independent check of a business or user-visible outcome. A script can therefore return 0 even when a file was not created, a deployment did not take effect, or a service is not usable.
Start by asking: Which exact process returned 0? It may be an individual command, the final command in a pipeline, a wrapper script, a CI step, or a container process. Each layer can report only what its own logic and status-propagation rules tell it.
See the Bash reference on exit status for the shell’s status conventions.

Why does false | true return 0 in Bash?
By default, Bash assigns a pipeline the status of its last command. In false | true, false fails, but true is last and succeeds, so the pipeline’s status is 0. That is why a command in the middle of a chain can fail while the enclosing pipeline appears successful.
Enable Bash’s pipefail option when the intended policy is for a pipeline to fail if any component fails. With pipefail, the pipeline returns the status of the rightmost command that exited nonzero, or 0 if every component succeeded:

set -o pipefail
false | true
printf 'pipeline status: %sn' "$?"
In this example, the reported pipeline status is nonzero. If you need the status of each component rather than the pipeline’s combined result, Bash’s PIPESTATUS array can help—but capture it immediately after the pipeline, before another command changes it:
false | true
statuses=("${PIPESTATUS[@]}")
printf 'first=%s second=%sn' "${statuses[0]}" "${statuses[1]}"
These examples use Bash syntax and behavior. POSIX.1-2024 also specifies the last-command rule for a pipeline when ! is not used, but shell options differ; confirm which shell runs your script before applying Bash-specific syntax. The Bash pipeline reference and The Open Group Shell Command Language specification describe these rules.

How can a script or CI step hide a failure?
A wrapper’s returned status depends on what it runs, what it does with errors, and which status reaches the parent process. A script may continue after a failed command, deliberately handle an error without returning failure, or finish by running a successful command whose status becomes the script’s final status. These are possibilities to investigate, not behavior that applies to every wrapper.
- Identify the reporting boundary. Find the exact command, script, or CI step whose status the parent runner records.
- Trace status changes. Check whether a later successful command replaced an earlier failure, whether the failure was inside a pipeline, or whether error handling intentionally allowed execution to continue.
- Check the shell and pipeline policy. For Bash, decide whether
set -o pipefailmatches the desired policy, and capturePIPESTATUSimmediately when you need individual component results. - Verify the intended result separately. Check an observable outcome such as an expected file, deployed revision, or test report. A zero status cannot validate a success condition that the process was never asked to check.
Do not assume that set -e alone catches every failure: it has exceptions, and it does not change the specific default rule that a Bash pipeline normally reports its last command’s status. Choose explicit status handling that matches the workflow. The relevant command and pipeline rules are documented in the Bash manual, the Bash exit-status reference, and the POSIX shell specification.

Why can a Docker or Kubernetes container exit with code 0 when the job failed?
A container process can report a clean exit while an application-specific goal remains unmet. Kubernetes records a container’s termination reason, exit code, and start and finish times; those process details do not themselves establish that an application-level task produced the result a user expected.
Kubernetes restart policy describes what happens after termination, not whether your application’s broader goal was satisfied:

Always: restart after any termination.OnFailure: restart after a nonzero exit.Never: do not automatically restart.
As a result, a batch process that exits 0 can be treated as complete under the restart policy even if a separate business-level success condition was not met. The application must report or expose that condition if it needs to affect the process status.
Process termination is also different from service health. Kubernetes liveness probes can detect a deadlock and trigger a restart; readiness probes determine whether a container is ready to accept traffic. A failed readiness probe removes the Pod IP from matching Service EndpointSlices. A process may therefore be running without being ready for traffic, or may terminate successfully while the larger service outcome still needs checking.
These Kubernetes distinctions are documented in Pod Lifecycle.
What should you inspect when the reported status and result disagree?
Inspect evidence at the layer where the failure appears. For shell automation, trace the command chain and preserve component statuses when needed. For Kubernetes, compare the container’s termination details with logs, events, and probe behavior. In either case, define success as an observable result rather than relying on process completion alone.
| Context | Status that may mislead | What to inspect | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bash pipeline or script | A pipeline may report only its final command’s status; later commands can also determine a wrapper’s final status. | Pipeline components, status propagation, and the intended output or side effect. | Bash normally uses the last pipeline command’s status; with pipefail, it uses the rightmost nonzero status, or zero if all components succeed. Bash pipeline reference. |
| Kubernetes container or workload | A container exit status does not establish readiness or an application-specific outcome. | Termination reason, exit code, start and finish times, logs, Pod events, and readiness or liveness behavior. | Kubernetes exposes per-container termination details and documents restart-policy and probe behavior. Pod Lifecycle. |
For Bash and CI automation
- Reproduce the command chain and identify which process or step emitted the zero.
- Check whether an earlier nonzero status was lost in a pipeline or replaced by later success.
- Use
set -o pipefailwhen failure of any Bash pipeline component should fail the pipeline; capturePIPESTATUSimmediately if you need each component’s status. - Check the artifact or side effect the workflow was intended to produce, such as the expected file, deployed revision, or test report.
For Kubernetes
- Run
kubectl describe pod <pod>and inspect the container state, termination reason and code, timestamps, and Pod events. - Run
kubectl logs <pod>to inspect application output. - If the issue is service availability, check readiness; if a process appears stuck, check liveness behavior.
- Compare those observations with an explicit success criterion for the workload; a termination code alone cannot express an unstated application requirement.
Kubernetes’ application troubleshooting guide recommends inspecting logs and Pod descriptions when diagnosing application issues.
