Why a Portable Power Station’s Usable Capacity Is Lower Than Its Rated Capacity

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

A portable power station’s watt-hour (Wh) rating describes the energy stored in its battery pack, not the energy an appliance is guaranteed to receive. The usable amount is lower because the station may limit how deeply the battery is discharged, lose energy in AC conversion, consume power while sitting idle, and encounter a load whose demand changes over time.

For a useful runtime estimate, use the manufacturer’s method for the exact model and output you plan to use. A percentage published for one station is not a safe substitute for an undisclosed figure on another.

Rated capacity and usable capacity are different numbers

What the rated Wh figure measures

Rated capacity is the maximum energy a fully charged battery pack can store under the maker’s stated rating conditions. It is expressed in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh): a 1,000 Wh station theoretically stores enough energy to deliver 100 watts for 10 hours before any losses or operating limits are considered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That arithmetic describes the battery pack, not a wall outlet. A station’s AC outlet must take energy from the battery, pass it through power electronics and an inverter, and keep its control systems running. The battery-management system may also reserve part of the pack instead of allowing a complete discharge. The result is less energy at the appliance than the label suggests.

Why the difference is normal

Three distinct quantities are often mixed together:

Quantity Meaning Why it matters
Rated capacity Energy stored in the battery pack when fully charged Useful for comparing the size of battery packs, but not a promise of outlet energy
Permitted depth of discharge The fraction of pack energy the station allows you to use Protects the battery and reduces the energy available to a load
Conversion efficiency The fraction that survives the inverter or other power conversion AC loads generally receive less than the battery sends into the inverter
Self-consumption Power used by the station itself while an output is enabled A fixed overhead that is especially significant with small or long-running loads

Some manufacturers publish separate depth-of-discharge and efficiency values. Others provide one combined factor or only runtime examples. Treat those disclosures as model-specific operating information, not as an industry standard.

How to calculate an AC runtime estimate

The general form used in a published BLUETTI AC180 example is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimated runtime (hours) = battery capacity (Wh) × depth-of-discharge fraction × inverter efficiency ÷ (appliance load (W) + station self-consumption (W)).

Use the equation only when the depth-of-discharge, efficiency and self-consumption inputs apply to the exact station, output mode and conditions. If a maker supplies a single combined factor, use that factor instead of inventing separate values.

BLUETTI AC180 example

GearSpec Outpost reported BLUETTI’s AC180 factors in an article updated October 2, 2026. The station is rated at 1,152 Wh, with a stated 90% depth of discharge and 85% inverter efficiency for the example. Applying those two factors gives approximately 881 Wh before the station’s own AC consumption is counted:

1,152 Wh × 0.90 × 0.85 ≈ 881 Wh.

The same example includes about 15 W of self-consumption and estimates a 100 W blender runtime of approximately 7.66 hours:

1,152 × 0.90 × 0.85 ÷ (100 + 15) ≈ 7.66 hours.

This is a worked example for the AC180 configuration described by that source. It is not a promise that every AC180 load will run for 7.66 hours, and it should not be applied to another model. The cited formula specifically excludes compressor loads such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 example

GearSpec Outpost also reported a simplified Jackery calculation for the Explorer 1000 v2. Starting with 1,070 Wh and applying a single 0.8 factor produces 856 Wh:

1,070 Wh × 0.8 = 856 Wh.

That 0.8 factor is presented as one combined allowance; it does not identify separate depth-of-discharge and inverter-efficiency values. It belongs to that model’s published guidance and cannot be transferred to another Jackery station or to a competing product.

Illustrative runtimes are not guarantees

Jackery Support, in an article updated August 10, 2026, gives illustrative runtimes for a 1,070 Wh station: about 1.1 hours for an 800 W hair dryer and about 4.1 hours for a 200 W LCD television. The article says actual runtime varies with the device’s power consumption and the station’s efficiency. Those figures help show how load size changes runtime; they are not guarantees for every hair dryer, television, battery condition or operating mode.

Where the missing energy goes

Depth-of-discharge limits

A station normally does not expose every watt-hour stored in the cells. Its control system can stop discharge before the pack reaches an absolute electrical minimum. The permitted depth of discharge is therefore a direct multiplier in a runtime calculation. A 90% allowance means the calculation starts with 90% of the rated pack energy, not 100%.

Depth-of-discharge guidance can be limited to a product family or operating mode. EcoFlow’s US guide, dated July 28, 2025, defines rated capacity and discusses depth-of-discharge guidance specific to its DELTA series. Do not assume that guidance applies to every station made by the same company.

Inverter and conversion losses

When you use an AC outlet, the battery’s direct-current output is converted to alternating current. The conversion is not perfectly efficient, so some energy becomes heat or is consumed by the power electronics. Inverter efficiency is another multiplier, separate from the permitted depth of discharge.

DC outputs can follow a different conversion path and may avoid the AC inverter stage. That does not make their delivered energy identical to the battery rating: the station can still have output-conversion losses and its own operating overhead. Compare the manufacturer’s runtime method for the specific AC or DC port you intend to use.

Idle and control-system consumption

A station can draw power even when the appliance itself is using little. Display electronics, control circuitry, cooling and an enabled inverter all contribute to self-consumption. A fixed 15 W overhead is minor beside a 1,000 W load but substantial beside a 20 W network device. This is why a small appliance can run for much less time than a simple rated-Wh divided by watts calculation suggests.

Why the appliance can change the answer

Running power is not the whole story

Runtime estimates usually use a steady watt figure. Real appliances can cycle, throttle or draw different amounts during operation. A television may change brightness, a charger may taper as a battery fills, and a motor-driven device may alternate between active and idle states. The station responds to the actual load profile, not the number printed on the appliance’s nameplate alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Startup surge

Motors and compressors can demand several times their rated running power when they start. The station therefore needs both enough continuous output and enough surge capability. A capacity calculation can look adequate while the inverter still shuts down because the instantaneous startup demand exceeds its limit.

Refrigerators and air conditioners

Compressor appliances are a special case. Their cycles, startup surges and changing running demand make a steady-load formula unreliable. The AC180 example expressly cautions that its formula does not apply to refrigerators and air conditioners. For these loads, use the station maker’s compressor-specific guidance and verify both continuous and surge ratings.

There is no universal usable-capacity percentage

The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish one cross-brand percentage for how much rated capacity is usable. One product may disclose a combined 0.8 factor; another may publish separate efficiency and discharge values; a third may provide only example runtimes. If the maker does not state usable energy or the inputs needed to calculate it, mark that value as unknown rather than borrowing a rival’s percentage.

Even within one brand, factors can change with output type, firmware, power level and operating mode. A percentage measured or reported for an AC outlet cannot automatically describe a 12 V DC port. A figure from a small station also says nothing about a larger model unless the maker explicitly applies it to both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to estimate your own runtime

  1. Identify the exact output path. Decide whether the appliance will use an AC outlet, USB port or DC socket. Note any output mode that enables an inverter or special feature.
  2. Find model-specific inputs. Look for the station’s published depth-of-discharge limit, combined usable-energy factor, inverter efficiency and self-consumption at the intended output. Record the model, version and mode; do not mix figures from different products.
  3. Determine the appliance’s real demand. Use the maker’s measured wattage when available. For a variable load, measure several operating states and use a representative average. A plug-in watt meter can reveal an appliance’s consumption, but it does not measure the station’s internal capacity or establish inverter efficiency.
  4. Include fixed overhead. Add the station’s published self-consumption to the appliance watts when the formula calls for it. If the station provides no idle-draw figure, state that the estimate is incomplete instead of silently assuming zero.
  5. Calculate hours, then sanity-check the result. Divide the usable-energy estimate by the combined load. Check that the appliance’s continuous wattage is below the station’s rating and that its startup surge is within the stated surge capability.
  6. Validate under the intended conditions. Compare the estimate with the station’s own runtime table or support guidance for a similar load. Treat a difference as a prompt to inspect load cycling, surge events, output mode and self-consumption, not as proof that the Wh label is wrong.

Comparison point Question to ask Why it changes the decision
Rated capacity How many Wh or kWh does the fully charged pack store? Indicates pack size, but not guaranteed delivered energy
Usable-energy method Does the maker publish a combined factor, separate factors or a runtime formula? Reveals how much of the label can be used in the stated configuration
Output path Will the device use AC, USB or DC? Different conversion paths have different losses and overhead
Self-consumption How many watts does the station use with the intended output enabled? Fixed draw can dominate runtime for small loads
Continuous output Can the inverter supply the appliance’s sustained wattage? Prevents overload shutdown during normal operation
Surge capability Can it handle the appliance’s startup demand? Critical for compressors, pumps and other motor loads
Load-specific guidance Does the maker publish examples for your appliance type? Compressor and cycling loads are poorly represented by a simple steady-load formula
Charging and expansion Does the station support the solar input, extra battery or charging method you need? Determines how quickly you can restore energy, but does not increase stored Wh at a given moment

Choosing capacity for a real device

Start with energy, not the headline number

List the devices you need to run, their expected wattage and the number of hours required. A low-watt networking device may be limited by the station’s idle draw, while a high-watt heater or hair dryer may be limited by continuous output and short runtime. Add the loads only when the station will power them simultaneously; otherwise calculate each duty period separately.

Separate energy needs from power needs

Wh answers “how long,” while watts answer “can the station run it right now.” A station with ample Wh can still fail to start a compressor if its inverter lacks surge capacity. Conversely, a high-output station may start a device but run it briefly if its battery pack is small.

Plan for the stated conditions

If the manufacturer’s runtime example includes a particular self-consumption value, output mode or appliance restriction, reproduce those conditions as closely as possible. A result calculated for a blender on AC should not be presented as a refrigerator runtime or as a DC-output result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Charging and solar do not change instantaneous usable capacity

A compatible solar panel or other charger can replenish a station, but it does not add energy to the battery at the moment you read the rated Wh label. Charging speed, sunlight and the station’s supported input determine how quickly the stored energy returns. Check compatibility and the station’s specified charging limits before treating solar input as part of an emergency runtime plan.

Common mistakes and corrections

Mistake Correction
Dividing rated Wh by appliance watts and calling the result guaranteed runtime Apply the exact model’s usable-energy factors and self-consumption, then describe the result as an estimate
Using another brand’s efficiency percentage Use only figures published for the station and output you are evaluating
Ignoring the station’s own draw Include published idle or inverter consumption, especially for small loads
Using a steady-load formula for a refrigerator or air conditioner Use compressor-specific guidance and check startup surge
Comparing stations only by rated Wh Compare usable-energy method, output ratings, self-consumption, surge capability and load-specific examples
Treating a support article’s example as a universal promise Keep the example’s model, load, date and conditions attached to the number

What to check when runtime is shorter than expected

  • Confirm that the appliance’s actual watts match the figure used in the estimate.
  • Check whether an AC inverter or another output mode was left enabled between uses.
  • Look for cycling or startup surges that the simple calculation did not represent.
  • Verify that the station’s continuous and surge ratings cover the load.
  • Recalculate with the manufacturer’s self-consumption and usable-energy factors for the exact model.
  • If no model-specific factor is published, report the delivered energy as unknown rather than substituting a cross-brand percentage.

The practical answer

A portable power station’s rated Wh is the size of its battery pack; usable capacity is what remains after discharge limits, conversion losses, station self-consumption and the appliance’s real behavior are accounted for. The only dependable runtime estimate is the one tied to the exact model, output path and load. Use the maker’s published method, verify continuous and surge requirements, and treat every result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed number.
