A portable power station can lose charge while it is switched off because its battery naturally self-discharges. Extra consumption can come from standby electronics, a display, wireless connectivity, an enabled output circuit, or equipment left plugged in. The amount is model-dependent: there is no universal industry percentage for monthly idle loss.
For a concrete reference, Jackery Support says its Plus and v2 series lose about 5% per month, while its Pro series loses about 5–10% per month. Those figures apply to the named Jackery families, not every power station or even every model from the same manufacturer.

What happens inside a power station when it is “off”
Turning off the AC, USB, and DC outputs usually stops the large loads that would drain a station during normal use. It does not stop every electrical process. Lithium battery cells gradually lose stored energy through natural self-discharge, and the battery-management system (BMS) continues monitoring cell voltage, temperature, and safety limits.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome models also keep a small control circuit alive for the power button, screen, wireless connection, remote app, low-temperature protection, or automatic fault detection. If a cable, charger, refrigerator, modem, or other device remains connected, the station may supply standby power even when its main outputs appear disabled. Manufacturers do not publish one common standby-drain rate, so self-discharge and powered standby must be treated as separate, model-specific factors.

How much charge loss is normal?
The best available numbers are manufacturer guidance rather than a cross-brand laboratory benchmark. Jackery Support’s article updated July 2, 2026, states that its Plus and v2 series lose about 5% per month through self-discharge. It gives about 5–10% per month for its Pro series.
| Product family or guidance | Published idle or storage information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Jackery Plus series | About 5% self-discharge per month | Jackery’s family-level guidance; not a guarantee for every model or condition |
| Jackery v2 series | About 5% self-discharge per month | Jackery’s family-level guidance |
| Jackery Pro series | About 5–10% self-discharge per month | A range supplied by Jackery, not an industry standard |
| Other brands and models | Not established by the cited sources | Use the exact product manual or support page |
Temperature, battery age, state of charge, enabled features, and connected equipment can change what you observe. A percentage drop that is much faster than the rate published for your exact model deserves investigation, but the sources do not define a universal percentage at which a battery is officially defective.
Self-discharge versus standby drain
Natural self-discharge
Self-discharge is the gradual loss that occurs even when no useful appliance is running. Jackery Support describes it this way: “Even when not in use, a portable power station will gradually lose charge due to natural self discharge.” The rate is normally slow and continuous rather than a sudden overnight collapse.
Standby electronics
A station may not be electrically dead when the outputs are switched off. A wireless radio, app connection, illuminated display, inverter-control board, or other monitoring circuit can draw energy. “Off,” “sleep,” “standby,” and “storage mode” may therefore mean different things on different products. Check the manual for the exact button sequence and the conditions that disable wireless, AC, USB, and DC sections.

Connected loads
Unplug every accessory before measuring idle loss. Chargers, USB hubs, network equipment, lamps, and appliances can consume power even when they are not actively operating. An inverter may also use energy simply to remain enabled. Record the battery percentage with all outputs and cables disconnected, then check it again under the same temperature and power-state conditions.
Storage charge: do not copy one model’s number to another
Long-term storage advice differs by product. Jackery’s general long-storage support guidance says to avoid storing a station at 0% and to keep the remaining capacity above 80%. The Jackery Explorer 300 Plus user manual, version JAK-UM-V1.05, instead recommends checking the unit regularly and charging it to about 60–80% for extended storage.
The Explorer 300 Plus manual warns that leaving the unit depleted for three to six months can reduce performance or leave it unable to recharge. Because the general support article and the model manual express storage targets differently, the current manual for your exact model and region takes priority.

A practical long-term storage procedure
- Identify the exact model. Record the model name, revision, and region from the label or manual. Family-level advice is not a substitute for model instructions.
- Remove every load. Disconnect AC, USB, DC, vehicle, solar, and expansion cables. Turn off each output and disable wireless or app features if the manual provides that option.
- Set the storage percentage required by the manual. Do not deliberately leave the battery at 0%. Depending on the product, the published target may be above 80% or about 60–80%.
- Store it cool, dry, and shaded. Jackery’s general FAQ lists 10–40°C for storage and warns against high temperatures and direct sunlight. A model manual can attach a different temperature range to a particular storage duration, so use that document when it differs.
- Inspect it on the stated schedule. Jackery Support suggests powering on and checking a stored station about every three months. Recharge according to the model’s target rather than waiting until the display reaches zero.
- Document the checks. Write down date, displayed percentage, temperature, and power state. This makes a genuine abnormal decline easier to distinguish from a display that has simply recalibrated.
Is it safe to leave a station plugged in?
Jackery says its stations use a BMS to prevent overcharging, but its support guidance still recommends unplugging the unit after it reaches 100%. That is the company’s advice for its products; it does not prove that every manufacturer wants continuous AC connection.

Examples of model-specific maintenance schedules
Other manufacturers likewise publish instructions tied to individual manuals rather than one universal cycle. The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus (Wireless) manual recommends a three-month maintenance cycle and warns against leaving the device uncharged or unused for more than six months. The EcoFlow E980 manual also calls for a periodic storage cycle. These documents illustrate why a cycle from one model should not be applied automatically to another.
| Document | Maintenance or storage direction stated in the document | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Jackery general long-storage FAQ | Check approximately every three months; avoid 0%; keep remaining capacity above 80% | General Jackery support guidance |
| Jackery Explorer 300 Plus manual, JAK-UM-V1.05 | Check regularly; charge to about 60–80%; depletion for three to six months may damage performance or prevent recharge | Explorer 300 Plus only |
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus (Wireless) manual | Three-month maintenance cycle; do not leave uncharged or unused beyond six months | RIVER 3 Plus (Wireless) model document |
| EcoFlow E980 manual | Periodic storage cycle | E980 model document |

Do not merge temperature numbers from different documents. Jackery’s general support FAQ gives a 10–40°C storage range, while the Explorer 300 Plus manual supplies a different instruction for a six-month storage period. The duration attached to a temperature limit matters; use the current manual for the exact station instead of treating either figure as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check whether the loss is abnormal
- Fully charge under the approved method. Use the supplied AC charger or an input explicitly listed as compatible. For solar charging, verify the panel, connector, voltage, current, and input limits in the model manual.
- Isolate the station. Unplug all loads and chargers, switch outputs off, and note whether wireless or app connectivity remains enabled.
- Record a baseline. Note the displayed percentage, date, ambient temperature, and whether the unit is in off, standby, or storage mode.
- Recheck on a fixed schedule. Compare readings after a week or month, not at random times. A display can change after a restart or recalibration, so one reading alone is weak evidence.
- Compare with the published specification. Use the exact model’s stated self-discharge or storage guidance. Do not compare a family estimate with a different model’s standby behavior.
- Escalate if necessary. If the loss is substantially faster than the published rate, or the station will not accept a charge, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and service process.
There is no source-supported cross-brand threshold that proves a failed battery from a percentage drop alone. A rapid decline may indicate a connected load, an enabled feature, extreme temperature, a faulty charger, a display-calibration issue, or battery deterioration. Service diagnosis is required to distinguish them.
Recharging after storage
Use only charging inputs and accessories that the manual approves. The Explorer 300 Plus documentation describes solar charging with model-specific panel and connector compatibility. A compatible solar panel can be a useful way to restore charge where AC power is unavailable, but it does not stop natural self-discharge and is not required for routine storage.

When replacement or service makes sense
Ordinary gradual loss is not, by itself, evidence that a replacement is needed. First eliminate connected equipment, standby settings, temperature extremes, and an unsuitable storage state. Then compare the measured behavior with the exact model’s documentation.
Contact the manufacturer if the unit loses charge far faster than its published guidance, becomes unusually hot, displays an error, refuses to recharge, shuts down under a light load, or shows physical swelling or damage. Stop using a visibly damaged battery and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions rather than opening the enclosure or attempting a cell repair.
The bottom line for storage
Some loss while sitting unused is expected because battery chemistry causes self-discharge. A published figure such as Jackery’s approximately 5% per month for Plus and v2 families or 5–10% per month for Pro families is useful only within that manufacturer’s stated scope. Standby circuits and connected devices can add to the loss, and their consumption is model-dependent.
