A portable music player usually ignores a song for one of five reasons: the file uses an unsupported codec or container, its bitrate or other technical properties exceed the player’s limits, it has copy protection, it was transferred in an incompatible USB mode, or it is in a folder the player does not scan. An .mp3 extension alone does not prove that every player can decode the file. Identify the exact model, compare the file’s real properties with that model’s manual, and then verify the transfer path before formatting storage or replacing hardware.
What “not recognized” actually means
Players report this symptom in several ways: a song is absent from the library, the device shows an unsupported-format message, playback skips, or the computer displays the file while the player does not. These outcomes can have different causes. A file can be syntactically valid yet still fail because the player does not support its codec, sample rate, bit depth, bitrate, maximum size, or digital-rights status. Conversely, a fully compatible file remains invisible if copying never finished or the library scanner does not search its destination folder.

“MP3 player” is a category, not a universal specification. Support differs by model, firmware and sometimes storage location. Always start with the exact model number printed on the device or in its settings.

Example: Sony NW-A25 family
The Sony NW-A25 documentation (2015) lists MP3, WMA, FLAC, linear PCM/WAV, AAC/HE-AAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF, with model-specific extensions and technical limits. Its table gives MP3 support from 32 to 320 kbps, FLAC at 16- or 24-bit, and AAC at 16 to 320 kbps. It also says files of 4 GB or larger cannot be played, copyright-protected WMA and AAC-LC files cannot be played, and supported sampling frequencies can vary with the encoder. These are specifications for the NW-A25 family, not a universal rule for other players.
Model differences are normal
SanDisk’s compatibility tables show why assumptions fail: Ogg Vorbis is not supported on Clip Sport Plus, Voice and Go models, while FLAC and Ogg support is tied to named models and, in some cases, current firmware. The same table lists MP3 bitrates from 8 to 320 kbps and AAC from 16 to 320 kbps. Those figures describe the listed models and table revision, not every portable player. SanDisk states that its MP3 players have reached end of support, so older instructions and firmware resources may be difficult to maintain.

Inspect the file beyond its extension
Codec and container are different
The filename ending identifies a container or convention, not necessarily the audio stream inside it. A file named .m4a might contain AAC or Apple Lossless; a .wav file can contain linear PCM with properties the player does not accept. Use an audio-information tool on the computer to inspect the actual codec, container, bitrate mode, sample rate, bit depth, channel layout and file size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare every relevant property
- Codec: Confirm that the decoder is listed for your exact player.
- Container and extension: Check that both are among the documented combinations; changing the filename extension does not convert audio.
- Bitrate: A value above the model’s range can make an otherwise familiar codec unavailable. Variable-bitrate files may also need to stay within the documented limits.
- Sampling frequency: High or unusual rates may be unsupported, and Sony notes that support can vary with the encoder.
- Bit depth: Lossless formats may be limited to particular depths, such as the NW-A25’s 16- and 24-bit FLAC entries.
- File size: Check the model’s maximum. The NW-A25 guide excludes files at 4 GB or larger.
- Channels and metadata: If the manual specifies channel or tag restrictions, compare those as well; do not assume that a visible title in the computer means the player can index it.
If only one or two songs fail while other tracks work, a property of those files is more likely than a dead player. Make a copy before converting anything so the original remains available.

Check DRM and copy protection
Digital-rights management can block playback even when the extension and codec appear correct. The NW-A25 guide specifically excludes copyright-protected WMA and AAC-LC. SanDisk’s tables identify DRM-free requirements for particular formats and models and distinguish DRM-free WMA from protected files. A purchase or download service may have supplied a protected file whose restrictions are not obvious from its name.
Look for a protection or license field in the file’s properties or in the service that supplied it. Use an authorized, DRM-free download or a format and transfer method permitted by the service; renaming the file cannot remove protection. Do not infer that every WMA, AAC or other familiar file is either protected or unprotected without checking its source and the player’s manual.

Verify the USB connection and operating-system mode
MTP and MSC are not interchangeable
Some players expose more than one USB protocol. SanDisk documents that Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) works with Windows but not macOS, while Mass Storage Class (MSC) works with both. If the player is set to MTP and you are using a Mac, the computer may fail to present the expected storage or transfer interface. Select the mode supported by both your player and host operating system, following that model’s instructions.

A file that appears in a computer window may still be incomplete on the player. Wait for the operating system or transfer application to finish, eject the device safely, and then allow the player to update its library. The Sony NW-A306 Help Guide warns: “Do not disconnect the USB Type-C cable during data transfer (USB Type-C cable: supplied).” Apply that warning to the NW-A306 context; other models may use different cables and procedures.
Best Value
For the NW-A306, Sony instructs users to choose File Transfer, copy music to the internal Music folder or to a folder registered for import, and avoid interrupting the operation. Its guide also says, “Do not format the memory of the player on the computer.” Do not treat these folder names or warnings as universal; consult your own model before changing destinations or storage settings.
Confirm the destination and library scan
Copy to a folder the model indexes
Many players scan only a default music directory or folders registered in their settings. A drag-and-drop copy to the device root, a hidden system folder or an unregistered removable-card directory may leave the file invisible even though the computer can open it. Follow the manual’s internal-storage and card-storage paths exactly, and do not rename default folders unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
Allow indexing to finish
After a large transfer, the player may need time to build or refresh its database. Keep it powered on and connected as directed. If the computer sees the file but the player does not, look in the model’s settings for a library refresh or rescan command. There is no single rescan procedure across brands, so do not apply a button sequence from another model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A diagnostic sequence that avoids destructive fixes
- Identify the model and firmware. Write down the complete model number, storage type and firmware version shown in the device information screen.
- Read the official specification table. Note codecs, extensions, bitrate, sample-rate, bit-depth and maximum-size limits, plus DRM and folder requirements.
- Inspect one failing file. Use the computer’s media-information view or an audio utility to record its actual codec, container, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, size and protection status.
- Try one known-compatible, unprotected file. Choose a small track that matches the manual exactly. This diagnostic separates a file-specific issue from a transfer or device-wide issue; it is a troubleshooting test, not a claim that every model has been tested.
- Set the correct USB mode. Match MTP, MSC or the model’s named mode to the computer’s operating system. On the documented SanDisk examples, MTP is Windows-only and MSC supports Windows and macOS.
- Copy to the documented music folder. Use the internal Music folder or a registered import folder where required. Wait for completion and safely eject.
- Rescan or reboot only as documented. Use the player’s own refresh-library command if available, then check whether the test track appears.
- Investigate storage and firmware. If compatible files still fail, consult the model’s card-compatibility, storage and firmware guidance. Older SanDisk players may have limited support resources because the line is end-of-support.
- Reserve formatting or replacement for last. Back up music and settings first, and format only when the exact manual prescribes it. The available documentation does not establish one universal cable, card, reset or repair for this symptom.
How to interpret the result
| Observation | Most likely area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| One file fails; known-good tracks play | Codec, bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, size or DRM | Compare the failing file’s properties with the model table and obtain a compatible, unprotected copy. |
| Several new files are absent, but old tracks remain | Transfer mode, destination folder or incomplete indexing | Use the supported USB mode, copy to the scanned folder, finish the transfer and rescan. |
| The computer cannot access the player correctly | USB protocol, cable/data connection or operating-system compatibility | Check the model’s MTP/MSC instructions and whether the connection is a data connection. |
| Compatible files fail on internal and removable storage | Firmware, storage compatibility or device fault | Follow the exact model’s firmware and storage guidance before considering a reset or replacement. |
What not to assume
- An
.mp3,.wma,.aacor.flacsuffix does not guarantee support. - Changing an extension does not transcode the audio or remove DRM.
- A format supported by one model is not automatically supported by another, even within one manufacturer’s range.
- A file visible in Finder or File Explorer is not proof that the player completed the copy or indexed the folder.
- Formatting the player or buying a cable or memory card before checking specifications can erase data without fixing an incompatibility.
When a conversion is appropriate
Convert a file only after the manual identifies the mismatch and you have confirmed that the source is legally usable without its protection restrictions. Choose output settings inside the documented codec, bitrate, sample-rate, bit-depth and size limits. Keep the original, give the converted copy a new filename, transfer it to the correct folder, and test it before converting an entire library. A conversion cannot solve a USB-mode, folder-indexing or storage-access problem, so those checks still matter when the player ignores every file.
