A portable monitor’s “No Signal” message usually means it is not receiving a usable video signal—not necessarily that the monitor is broken. Check that the monitor and source are on, the correct input is selected, and the cable is fully connected. If you are using USB-C, confirm that both the source port and monitor support video over USB-C; the connector’s shape alone does not guarantee video output.
Work through these checks first
- Turn on the monitor and source. Make sure the monitor is powered and the computer or other source device is awake and running. Reseat the signal cable at both ends. ASUS’s MB229CF service manual recommends checking the USB-C or HDMI connection and confirming that the signal source is on. Buttons and indicator behavior vary by model.
- Select the input that matches the cable. If the cable is connected to the monitor’s HDMI port, select HDMI; if it is connected over USB-C, select the corresponding USB-C input if the monitor offers input selection. A mismatch can produce “No Signal” even when a cable is connected. The exact menu labels depend on the monitor.
- Check whether the USB-C connection can carry video. Look up the specifications for both the source device and the monitor. A direct USB-C connection using DisplayPort Alt Mode requires video support at both ends. A USB-C port may support charging or data without supporting video. ASUS explains the distinction in its USB-C portable-monitor guidance. Dell documents the same issue for its C1422H, P1424H, and Pro P 14 Portable Monitor P1425: a computer port limited to data or power will not deliver video to those displays. That Dell guidance is specific to those models.
- Try the supplied cable. ASUS recommends starting with the cable included with the monitor. If you need a replacement, check that it explicitly supports the required USB-C video path, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode, and meets the requirements of both devices. A USB-C plug or charging capability by itself does not establish video compatibility. Dell also flags some USB-C-to-DisplayPort and USB-C-to-HDMI cable arrangements for the models covered by its support article; do not generalize that advice to other products.
- Provide the power the monitor requires. Connect external power if the manual recommends or requires it. Insufficient power can prevent a monitor from operating correctly, but extra power cannot make a source port that lacks video support send a picture. ASUS recommends connecting its portable monitor to a power source. LG’s guidance for the Gram +View specifies a device with DP Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery output of at least 7.5 W (5 V / 1.5 A); that requirement is for the named LG product, not a universal portable-monitor threshold.
- Install DisplayLink software only if your connection uses DisplayLink. ASUS distinguishes direct USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, which works without a DisplayLink driver, from its USB 3.0 DisplayLink approach, which requires the driver. Check the exact monitor documentation and obtain required software from the manufacturer’s official support page. A driver cannot add video-output capability to a USB-C port that does not support it.
- Test HDMI if both devices support a compatible HDMI path. Connect the HDMI cable, select the monitor’s HDMI input, and provide separate power if the monitor requires it. Check each device’s manual for connector compatibility and any adapter requirements.
Choose the troubleshooting path by connection type

When a cable or adapter purchase may help
Consider a replacement USB-C cable only after confirming that both devices support USB-C video and that the existing cable is faulty or unsuitable. Choose one explicitly specified for the required video mode; do not assume a charging cable will work. An HDMI cable is a reasonable alternative only when both devices have compatible HDMI connections. Choose any power adapter only after checking the monitor’s specified voltage, connector, and power needs.
