A pocket KVM can appear to “not detect” a computer for several different reasons: the video path may be dead, the keyboard and mouse USB path may be disconnected, the computer’s operating system may not enumerate the device, or the failure may occur only in BIOS/UEFI. Start by identifying which of those symptoms you have. Video and USB control usually use separate connections, so a working picture does not prove that USB control is connected, and working keyboard control does not prove that video is supported.
The safest fix is a controlled isolation sequence: verify the exact port labels and USB-C video capability, supply the KVM with the power specified for its model, reseat every cable, test the computer directly with the display, then test USB devices directly on the computer. Treat the instructions below as a general fault-finding method; the unnamed pocket KVM’s cable order, supported resolutions, EDID controls, reset procedure and power requirements must come from its own manual.

What “not detecting” can mean
Before changing settings, classify the failure. A KVM is a switch, not one single connection: a video connection carries the picture, while an upstream USB connection carries keyboard, mouse and other peripherals. Some products also expose a management or storage interface that the operating system can enumerate separately.
| What you observe | Most likely path to investigate first | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor says “no signal” or stays black | Computer video output, KVM video input, KVM output, display input, cable, resolution or EDID | It does not prove that USB control is faulty |
| Picture works but keyboard or mouse does nothing | KVM upstream USB link, device power, USB mode, hub or operating-system enumeration | It does not prove that the video path is correctly configured |
| The computer does not list the KVM or attached USB device | Host USB port, upstream cable, hub compatibility, drivers or KVM power | It does not prove that the monitor path is absent |
| It works after the operating system loads but not during startup | BIOS/UEFI USB support, hub topology or pre-boot video compatibility | It does not prove that the KVM is defective |
| Every function fails | Power, wrong port, reversed cable layout or a failed cable/KVM | It does not identify which individual path failed |
Write down the exact symptom and when it begins. “No video after switching,” “keyboard works only in Windows,” and “the host never lists a USB device” lead to different tests.

Confirm the pocket KVM’s ports and the computer’s capabilities
Follow the labels, not the connector shape
Read the KVM’s diagram and connect the computer to the port labeled host, upstream, input or computer. Connect the monitor to the port labeled display, monitor or output. A USB-C socket can be an upstream data connection, a video-capable input, a power input, or a combination of these. Two sockets that look identical may have entirely different jobs.
Do not connect the computer to a second display output or to a peripheral-only USB port and assume the KVM will infer the intended route. If the manual specifies a cable order, use it; some products expect the host cable to be connected before the peripherals or power is applied.
Check whether the computer’s USB-C port carries video
USB-C alone does not guarantee video. The particular computer port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or the required Thunderbolt video mode. Some USB-C ports are data-only. ASUS Global Support illustrates the distinction in one monitor configuration: “Upstream Port 2 is a USB Type-C port, but it is only for data transmission and does not support video signals.” That statement applies to the ASUS configuration described in its FAQ, not to every USB-C port or every KVM.
Look for a DisplayPort symbol, a Thunderbolt symbol, the computer’s technical specifications, or the KVM manual’s required mode. If the port is data-only, use the computer’s HDMI or DisplayPort output, or use an adapter that explicitly supports the required video standard. An adapter cannot create a video signal from a USB-C port that has no video capability.
Match the KVM’s supported video mode
Find the exact model’s maximum resolution, refresh rate, color format and connector requirements. A computer can detect a display while the KVM cannot pass the selected mode. Start testing at a conservative resolution and refresh rate supported by the KVM, then increase them after a stable picture appears. Do not copy an EDID switch position, voltage, resolution limit or reset combination from another model.
Verify power and reseat every connection
Use the specified power source
Many pocket KVMs need their own power even when USB is connected. Confirm that the KVM’s power indicator, if present, is on and use the manufacturer-specified supply. TESmart’s support guidance, for example, recommends the included power adapter for its model; PiKVM guides likewise specify model-specific power arrangements. Those recommendations are not universal adapter specifications. Do not substitute a supply merely because its plug fits.

Reconnect in a controlled order
- Turn off or disconnect the computer and display if the manual recommends doing so.
- Unplug the KVM’s power and all host, display and USB cables.
- Inspect both ends of every cable for bent contacts, looseness or damage.
- Connect the KVM power specified by its manual.
- Connect the computer to the KVM host/upstream port using the required video and USB cables.
- Connect the display to the KVM output and select that display input.
- Connect the keyboard and mouse to the KVM’s peripheral ports.
- Start the display and computer, then select the intended host on the KVM.
If the model’s instructions require a different order, follow them instead. The purpose of this sequence is to remove an ambiguous half-connected state, not to establish a universal startup rule.

For an intermittent or absent USB connection, try another USB port on the computer. Connect the keyboard or mouse directly to the computer as a control test. If the device works directly but not through the KVM, concentrate on the KVM’s upstream USB connection, its selected mode, available power and any hub between the computer and KVM.
Peripherals with lights, storage, cameras or other high-power features may exceed the KVM’s documented power budget. Total USB bandwidth can also affect operation, especially when several devices share one upstream link. Disconnect all but a basic keyboard for the first test, then add devices one at a time.
Fix a blank or missing video signal
1. Select the correct display input
Use the monitor’s physical controls to select the HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input that is actually connected to the KVM. Automatic input selection can stay on a different port after a switch or sleep event. Confirm that the KVM is also set to the host you are testing.
2. Perform a direct-to-display test
Disconnect the KVM from the video path and connect the computer directly to the display with a known-good, supported cable. This is the fastest way to separate a computer, display or cable problem from a KVM problem.
Recommended Free Tools
- If direct video also fails, troubleshoot the computer output, display input, display power, cable and computer graphics settings before blaming the KVM.
- If direct video works, reconnect the KVM and test with a known-good output cable. Verify both the computer-to-KVM input and KVM-to-display output.
- If one computer works through the KVM but another does not, compare their output standards, USB-C video capability, resolution and refresh rate.
3. Reduce the video mode for testing
Set the computer to a resolution and refresh rate listed in the exact KVM’s specifications. A host may still list an external display while the KVM cannot pass the selected mode. Test at a lower, common mode first; restore the desired setting only after the image is stable.

4. Consider adapters and EDID
Adapters, docks and converters can change handshake behavior. Remove unnecessary adapters and test a direct connector type supported by both the computer and KVM. If the computer detects a display but the screen remains blank through the KVM, manufacturer guidance identifies EDID or adapter compatibility as possible causes.
Some KVMs provide an EDID switch, emulator or learning procedure. Use only the setting and sequence documented for your exact model. An EDID instruction written for AV Access equipment, for example, should not be applied to an unidentified pocket KVM. If changing EDID settings makes the display disappear, return to the documented default and repeat the direct-cable test.
Fix keyboard, mouse and other USB failures
Check the upstream connection first
A KVM may use one cable for video and another for USB data. Confirm that the USB upstream cable runs from the KVM host/upstream port to the computer, not from a peripheral port to another peripheral port. If the product has separate USB-B, USB-C or proprietary upstream sockets, use the connector specified in its diagram.
Try a different host USB port and a short, known-good data cable. Some USB-C cables provide charging only or lack the lanes required for the KVM’s advertised function. A cable that powers the KVM is not necessarily a cable that carries USB data or video.
Remove hubs during diagnosis
Disconnect any intermediate USB hub, dock or monitor hub and connect the KVM directly to the computer. A hub can prevent some systems from detecting a KVM during startup or in UEFI/BIOS, and it adds another power and compatibility variable. Reintroduce the hub only after direct operation is reliable.
Check device power and bandwidth
Begin with one basic keyboard. Add the mouse, then other devices individually. If the keyboard works alone but fails when a drive, camera or illuminated device is added, check the KVM’s documented per-port and total power limits and the upstream USB bandwidth. Use separately powered peripherals where the manual permits it; do not assume an external supply is supported without confirmation.

Test each peripheral directly
Connect the keyboard and mouse to the computer without the KVM. If they fail directly, repair the device, cable, operating-system setting or computer USB port first. If they work directly but fail through the KVM, the fault is narrowed to the KVM’s upstream path, power, selected host or compatibility.

Separate BIOS/UEFI problems from operating-system problems
When it fails only before startup
If the KVM works once Windows, macOS or Linux has loaded but is absent in BIOS/UEFI, test with the KVM connected directly to the computer and no intermediate USB hub. PiKVM documentation warns that some UEFI/BIOS implementations may not detect its device through a hub at boot. That is a documented caveat for PiKVM and a useful isolation test for other designs, not a guarantee that every pocket KVM behaves the same way.
Use a basic wired keyboard for the pre-boot test. Wireless receivers, high-power devices and devices that require operating-system drivers may not be available in firmware. Check the computer firmware’s USB legacy-support or pre-boot USB setting only when the computer manufacturer documents that option.
When it fails only after the operating system loads
Inspect the host’s device list and reconnect the cables in the sequence specified by the KVM manual. SuperKVM’s support guidance recommends checking host-side enumeration and reconnecting its cables in a specified host-first order; apply that sequence only if it matches your model.
- Windows: open Device Manager and look under Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices and Display adapters. Unplug and reconnect the KVM while watching for a new device or an error icon.
- macOS: open System Information and inspect the USB section, then check Displays for the external monitor. Compare the lists with the KVM connected and disconnected.
- Linux: inspect the system’s USB-device listing and display tools, then compare the output before and after reconnecting the KVM. Distribution-specific names and commands vary, so use the distribution’s documentation for the appropriate listing command.
If the host never changes its device list, focus on power, the upstream cable, the computer port and the KVM’s host-side socket. If the host sees a USB device but the keyboard does not work, focus on the selected KVM channel, peripheral power, device compatibility or a faulty peripheral.
Use the direct-test results to locate the fault
| Direct test result | Likely conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Computer-to-display video fails without the KVM | The computer output, display, display input or cable is already a problem | Repair that path before testing the KVM further |
| Direct video works; KVM video fails | KVM wiring, selected input/output, supported mode, EDID, adapter or KVM hardware | Use the correct ports, a known-good cable and a supported resolution; then follow the exact model’s EDID guidance |
| USB device fails directly and through the KVM | Peripheral, cable, computer USB port or operating-system issue | Resolve the direct connection first |
| USB works directly but not through the KVM | KVM upstream link, power, hub, selected host or compatibility | Connect directly, remove hubs, use another host port and test one low-power device |
| Both video and USB fail | Power, wrong port, reversed topology, common cable issue or KVM hardware | Verify the manual’s diagram and power arrangement, then test each path independently |
| Only boot-time operation fails | Firmware, hub or pre-boot compatibility | Connect directly without a hub and test a basic wired keyboard and supported display mode |
Common scenarios and targeted fixes
The screen is black but the operating system sees a monitor
Confirm the monitor input, lower the resolution and refresh rate, remove adapters, and test a direct cable. A display being listed by the operating system means that some handshake occurred; it does not prove that the KVM can pass the selected pixel mode. If the direct path works and the KVM path does not, consult the model’s EDID and compatibility instructions.

The keyboard works in the operating system but not in BIOS
Remove the USB hub and connect the KVM directly to the computer. Test a simple wired keyboard and check whether the firmware offers USB legacy or pre-boot support. If the KVM becomes available after this change, the original topology was incompatible with the computer’s firmware rather than necessarily defective.
The picture works but the mouse disconnects
Test the mouse directly, then test it alone through the KVM. Check the KVM’s available device power and bandwidth, try another upstream USB port and replace a suspect data cable. A working video link does not validate the USB link.
The KVM works until the computer wakes from sleep
Reselect the KVM host and display input, disconnect and reconnect the upstream USB and video cables, and test the computer directly with the display. If the problem recurs only after sleep, record the computer model, operating system version and KVM firmware for support; the recovery behavior is model-specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOne computer works and another does not
Compare the computers’ physical output ports, USB-C video capability, supported resolution and refresh rate, adapters and power state. A data-only USB-C port or an unsupported display mode can make one computer appear incompatible while another works normally.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer
Contact support when direct video and direct USB tests are successful but the KVM still fails with the correct ports, power and supported settings, or when the KVM repeatedly drops both paths with known-good cables. Provide a complete diagnostic record:
- Exact KVM model, hardware revision and firmware version, if available
- Computer model, operating system and whether the failure is at boot, after sleep or only after login
- Host port type and the full cable diagram, including any adapters, dock or hub
- Display model, selected input, resolution and refresh rate
- Power adapter or supply used and the KVM’s power-indicator state
- Whether the operating system lists the KVM or any attached USB device
- Results of the direct-to-display and direct-to-computer USB tests
- Whether the problem affects video, USB, both paths or only one selected host
There is no single reset sequence or universal cable order for every pocket KVM. Follow the exact manual before attempting a factory reset, EDID procedure or firmware update; an incorrect procedure can erase settings or introduce a new compatibility problem.
Build a known-good setup before adding complexity
For a reliable baseline, use the KVM’s specified power supply, one computer, one display, one short supported video cable, one upstream USB data cable and a basic wired keyboard. Connect the KVM directly, select the correct display input and test at a supported conservative resolution. Once video and USB work independently, add a mouse, higher refresh rate, adapters, hubs and additional peripherals one at a time. This makes the first change that causes the failure visible instead of leaving several untested variables in the chain.
