A PlayStation trophy that will not unlock usually has one of two explanations: the game has not actually registered its exact requirement, or the trophy was earned but your console’s trophy list has not synchronized. Check the trophy’s own details first, then sync manually. If the game is locked, treat that as an account or license problem rather than proof that the trophy itself is broken.
The order matters. Repeating an objective will not repair a stale list, while repeated syncing cannot make an uncompleted condition count. Use the symptom to choose the right branch, and record the exact game and trophy if you need title-specific support.

Start by identifying which failure you have
Do not begin by assuming that every locked trophy is a PlayStation Network outage. A trophy can remain locked because the game condition was different from what you expected, because the condition was completed in an unsupported mode or account, or because the game displayed an unlock while the console list stayed stale. Those cases require different actions.

This classification also prevents unnecessary destructive steps. A trophy synchronization is an account-list update, not a save repair. A license restoration is an entitlement check, not a way to rewrite a game’s trophy logic. Start with the least invasive action that matches the symptom.

Read the trophy’s own requirement before changing anything
PlayStation trophy conditions vary from game to game. Official guidance describes objectives such as clearing levels, finding collectibles or completing particular tasks, but it does not provide one universal trigger that applies to every title. Trophy sets can contain Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze grades, and both the number of trophies and the conditions for earning them differ by game.

- Open the trophy entry and read the displayed condition.
Compare the wording with what you actually did. Look for distinctions such as a particular difficulty, level, collectible set, task order, game mode, character, save file or online activity. “Finish the story,” for example, may refer to a specific chapter or ending rather than any completed save. A collectible trophy may require every item in one playthrough, while a challenge may require a particular difficulty or an unaltered rule set.
Check the edition and platform as well. A PS4 release, PS5 release, remaster and regional edition can have separate trophy lists or different descriptions. A guide for another edition, platform or game version is not proof that your copy uses the same trigger. If the wording is ambiguous, copy the exact trophy name and description, including its grade, before looking for a title-specific explanation.

If the game supports offline play, an objective may be recorded locally and appear only after the console reconnects and synchronizes.
Separate an unregistered requirement from a stale trophy list
Synchronization cannot make an uncompleted requirement count. It updates the trophy information associated with your account when the game has already registered an earning event. Conversely, a game may register the event while the console interface has not yet refreshed. The practical test is what the game reported at the moment you met the objective.
If the game showed an unlock notification
Treat the case first as a synchronization problem. Wait until the game has finished saving, leave the game in its normal way, and manually sync the trophy list using the instructions below. If the trophy then appears, the condition was already registered and the local list was simply behind.
Do not delete the save or reinstall immediately. Preserve the save and note the time, chapter, mode and account in which the notification appeared. Those details can distinguish a delayed list update from a game that displayed an in-game message unrelated to the official trophy event.
If no unlock notification appeared
Read the requirement again and verify the account and save being used. A completed-looking objective is not enough if the game expected a different mode, sequence or condition. Some games check a final confirmation screen, a post-mission result, a complete collection count or an online connection rather than the moment you perform the last action.

General PlayStation instructions do not confirm whether a particular title has a bug, a hidden condition or a workaround. The game name, exact trophy and version are necessary for that diagnosis. If you can reproduce the result, write down the steps in order instead of relying on memory; sequence and difficulty details are often the difference between a valid trigger and an ordinary completion.
Manually synchronize trophies
PS5: Sync Trophies
- From the PS5 home screen, select your profile picture.
- Choose Trophies.
- Press the Options button.
- Select Sync Trophies.
Allow the operation to finish, then reopen the game’s trophy list and check the individual entry. If the list still does not change, continue with the network and service checks instead of repeatedly issuing the same command. A successful command means the list was contacted; it does not prove that the game registered a missing condition.
PS4: Sync With PlayStation Network
- Open Trophies from the function screen.
- Press the OPTIONS button.
- Select Sync With PlayStation Network.
After the synchronization completes, inspect the game again. This operation addresses a stale list; it does not alter the game’s underlying earning rules or convert an incomplete objective into an earned trophy. If the command produces an error, record the wording and proceed to connection and service checks.
Syncing is particularly useful after playing offline, changing consoles, or seeing an unlock banner that does not appear in your profile. It should be performed on the account that earned the trophy. Signing into a different profile can make a correct synchronization look as if nothing happened.
Check connection and PlayStation Network status
A trophy list, online objective or synchronization request needs a working connection. Check the console’s network connection and whether PlayStation is reporting a current service alert. An outage is a possibility only when the current status page actually shows one; do not assume that every missing trophy is caused by an outage.
- If the console reports that it is offline, restore the connection before trying to sync.
- If PlayStation reports an active service problem, wait until the affected service is available and then retry.
- If services appear normal but synchronization fails, note the exact error message, console generation and time of the failure.
- After a successful connection, run the console’s manual trophy-sync command again.
For an online trophy, also verify that the game’s own online session completed successfully. A network drop before the game sends the completion event can leave the objective looking finished locally without creating an account trophy. Do not assume that reconnecting will recreate an event the game never recorded; follow the title’s documented retry procedure where one exists.
PlayStation’s related troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the console is running current system software when game access, downloads or network-related functions are involved. Updating software is a compatibility check, not a guarantee that a game-specific trophy will unlock. If you update, restart the console and then run one fresh synchronization rather than repeating the same failed request many times.

When a padlock means access or licensing, not trophy logic
A padlock on a game, or an inability to launch it, is a separate problem from a trophy that remains locked inside a working game. First verify that you are signed in to the account that owns the game or has the relevant entitlement. A shared console can contain several profiles, and the account with access is not necessarily the one currently viewing the trophy list.
If the game is available to the correct account but access still fails, restoring licenses may help. Use this only for an entitlement, download or padlock symptom; it is not a general trophy reset.

Restore licenses on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Select Other.
- Choose Restore Licenses.
Restore licenses on PS4
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account Management.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose Restore.
PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect your data. It may correct an account or entitlement mismatch, but it will not repair a game-specific trigger that never fired. If the game launches normally and only one trophy remains locked, license restoration is unlikely to be the relevant branch.
Prepare correctly when trophies are missing after a transfer
When moving data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5, trophy information needs to be synchronized before the transfer. The source and destination must use the same account. PlayStation’s transfer preparation guidance also calls for current system software and a connection of both consoles to the same network.
- On the source console, sign in to the account whose trophies you need.
- Synchronize the source console’s trophy information using its PS5 or PS4 menu path.
- Update system software on both consoles.
- Sign in to the same account on the destination PS5.
- Connect both consoles to the same network and perform the transfer.
If trophies are absent afterward, first confirm that the destination account exactly matches the source account, including the sign-in identity rather than merely the console user name. Then synchronize on the destination PS5. A transfer cannot award a trophy whose condition was never registered by the game, and it cannot merge progress between different accounts.
If you still have the source console, leave its data intact while checking the destination. Syncing the source again gives you a clear comparison point. If the trophy is visible on the account after a source sync but not on the destination, investigate the transfer or destination sign-in; if it is absent everywhere, return to the game-condition branch.
Use a title-specific diagnosis when the general steps fail
Once the requirement has been checked, the list synchronized and access confirmed, the remaining possibilities are game-specific. General PlayStation trophy guidance does not establish whether an unspecified game has a known bug, a hidden requirement or a workaround. Avoid claiming that a database rebuild, reinstall, hardware replacement or another unverified procedure will unlock the trophy. Those actions can consume time or risk local data without addressing the actual trigger.
Collect the details support will need
- Exact game title and edition.
- Exact trophy name, grade and displayed description.
- PS4 or PS5 model and the game version shown by the console.
- The account used when the requirement was completed.
- The save, mode, difficulty or online activity involved, if relevant to the description.
- Whether an in-game or system unlock notification appeared.
- What happened during manual synchronization.
- Any error message, padlock symbol or service alert.
- Whether the issue began after a transfer, reinstall, update or change of console.
With those details, consult the game publisher or PlayStation Support. State what the trophy description required, what you did, whether the game acknowledged it and which synchronization path you used. Include reproducible steps and avoid saying only that the trophy is “stuck.” This prevents support from treating a registration problem as a license problem or vice versa.

Relying on a generic checklist
There is no universal action that unlocks every trophy. The number, grade and condition set belongs to the individual game. Start with the trophy entry rather than a broad claim that a certain action always works.
Assuming a sync command completes the objective
Syncing publishes trophy information already associated with the account. It cannot substitute for an in-game condition that was missed.

Using the wrong account
Trophy progress belongs to the signed-in account. A transfer or license check performed under another account can make a valid entitlement or trophy history appear missing.
Using license restoration for every locked icon
License restoration is appropriate when the game itself is inaccessible or shows an entitlement problem. A trophy entry that is locked after normal gameplay is ordinarily a condition or registration question.

Service status changes. Check the current status rather than treating a missing update as evidence of an outage.
Ignoring the transfer preparation step
If trophies were not synchronized on the source console before a transfer, the destination may not have the latest trophy information. The same account must be used on both systems.
Changing hardware before proving a software symptom
A missing trophy normally calls for checking the description, account, save, connection and game version. A new controller, storage device or console is not an established fix for an unregistered trophy. Escalate with evidence before spending money on replacement equipment.
