A larger battery is a bigger reservoir, not a guarantee of longer runtime. A phone with more milliamp-hours (mAh) can die sooner when its display, processor, cellular modem, apps, temperature or battery condition make it consume energy faster than a smaller-battery phone. The fair comparison is the time each phone lasts under the same workload and conditions—not the capacity number printed on a specification sheet.
Battery capacity and battery life are different measurements
Battery capacity describes how much electrical charge a battery can store. Battery life describes how long the complete phone operates before it needs a recharge. Apple’s support documentation makes the distinction plainly: “Battery life” is the amount of time a device runs before it needs to be recharged, while battery lifespan describes how long the battery remains useful before replacement becomes appropriate.

Runtime depends on both the stored charge and the rate of energy use. A high-capacity phone may have a brighter or larger display, a faster processor, more demanding cameras, less efficient software, or radios working harder to maintain a connection. If those components draw energy quickly enough, the larger reservoir can be emptied first.
Capacity figures also do not describe the conditions under which a phone was tested. Network type, signal strength, location, screen settings, applications, temperature and battery age can all change the result. A capacity comparison is therefore a starting point, not a runtime ranking.

What can make the larger-battery phone drain faster?
Display brightness and screen-on time
The display is often one of the phone’s most active loads. Android’s battery guidance identifies maximum brightness as a common cause of rapid drain. Two phones tested at different brightness levels are not making a fair comparison, even if both are playing the same video. A phone that spends more hours with its screen on—or drives it more brightly—can lose the battery contest despite having more capacity.
Display-related settings matter as well. Refresh-rate modes, always-on display features and screen wake settings can increase the time the panel is consuming power. Their exact names and availability vary by model and software version, so compare the settings actually enabled on each device.
Processor-intensive work
Gaming, high-resolution video recording, navigation, photo processing and other demanding tasks keep the processor and related components busy. Android documentation lists processor-intensive activity as a drain contributor. A phone with a larger battery may also have a faster chip or features that encourage heavier workloads; it can therefore use more energy per minute than a less powerful phone.
Short bursts can be misleading. A device may appear efficient while reading static text, then lose charge quickly during sustained gaming or camera use. Runtime claims are meaningful only when the workload is specified.
Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS radios
Wireless components consume different amounts of energy depending on what they are doing. Android’s power profiles track the display, CPU, cellular radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS as separate contributors. A phone using location navigation, a Bluetooth accessory and mobile data simultaneously can draw much more than one connected only to Wi-Fi with location disabled.

Apple’s archived energy guidance says cellular network activity requires significantly more energy than Wi-Fi. That does not mean cellular is always wasteful, but it does mean a Wi-Fi test and a mobile-data test should not be treated as equivalent. Samsung also warns that a Galaxy phone may drain faster while using 5G. The effect depends on the phone, carrier, coverage and radio conditions; 5G is not automatically worse in every situation.
Weak or fluctuating signal
A poor signal can increase consumption even when you are not actively browsing. The modem may work harder to maintain a connection, and transactions can take longer or be retried. Apple’s developer guidance notes that weak or fluctuating cellular conditions can cause slower or repeated transactions, adding energy use.

This is why the same phone can last noticeably different lengths of time at home, in an office, on a train or in a rural area. Location and signal strength belong in any serious comparison.
Background apps, syncing and notifications
Apps can wake the phone, refresh content, use location, upload photographs or process data while the screen is off. Android recommends reviewing background activity and using battery-saver controls when appropriate. A phone with more installed or poorly behaved apps may drain faster than a phone with a smaller battery running a quieter software load.
Battery-saver modes commonly pause some app updates, restrict background activity and disable or limit selected features. These controls can extend runtime, but they may delay notifications or reduce convenience. Menu labels differ among manufacturers, models, regions and software releases.

Heat and operating temperature
Heat increases short-term drain and accelerates chemical aging. Google’s Pixel guidance says a battery drains much faster when it is hot. Apple warns that prolonged exposure above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery capacity and gives 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F) as an ideal ambient-temperature range for its devices. Those temperature figures are Apple’s device guidance, not a universal rule for every phone.

Heat can come from gaming, direct sunlight, a hot car, fast charging, a poor signal or several demanding tasks at once. If a phone becomes hot, reducing the workload and moving it to a cooler environment can prevent additional drain. Do not interpret one hot session as proof that the battery’s nominal capacity is inadequate.
Battery age and health
Lithium-ion batteries lose chemical capacity as they age. A used phone labeled with the same original mAh rating as a new phone may no longer hold the same amount of charge. Charging history, operating temperature and ordinary chemical aging all affect the capacity available between charges.
Apple publishes model-specific design targets: current iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, while iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% after 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. Apple also states that actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. These are not universal guarantees for all lithium-ion phones.
Why mAh alone is a poor way to rank phones

Manufacturers qualify their battery claims for good reason. Apple says results vary with network, location, signal strength, configuration and usage. A stated runtime is useful only when its test method and conditions are understood. Independent measurements are most useful when they use the same procedure for both phones.

How to compare two phones fairly
- Match the task. Compare web browsing with web browsing, video playback with video playback, navigation with navigation, and gaming with gaming. Do not compare one phone while idle with another while recording video.
- Match the display. Use the same approximate brightness, screen timeout and refresh-rate mode. Record screen-on time instead of relying only on the percentage remaining.
- Match the connection. Use the same Wi-Fi network where practical, or the same cellular carrier and location. Note whether 5G is active and whether either phone is showing weak or fluctuating signal.
- Match software conditions. Start with similar app installations, background synchronization and notification settings. Update both devices consistently, because software versions can change power behavior.
- Start with comparable battery condition. New phones should be compared with new phones. For used devices, record reported maximum capacity, age and any available charging history.
- Repeat unusual results. A single session in a hot room or poor-signal area can reflect the environment rather than a stable design difference.
If a manufacturer reports a longer runtime, read the accompanying test conditions before treating it as a cross-brand result. A capacity number without a common test does not establish which phone lasts longer.

1. Find the largest consumers
Open the phone’s battery-use screen and inspect which apps and system components consumed the largest share. Pixel support describes reviewing app background usage; Apple provides per-app activity and battery-health information on supported models. A single app dominating the list is a more actionable clue than the phone’s advertised capacity.
2. Check screen use
Review screen-on time, brightness and display features. Temporarily lower brightness and disable unnecessary always-on or high-refresh settings, then observe whether drain changes during the same type of use. Android specifically identifies maximum brightness as a common drain source.
3. Separate radio problems from app problems
Notice whether the drain occurs mainly in areas with weak cellular coverage or while 5G is active. When practical, repeat the same activity on stable Wi-Fi. A large difference points toward network conditions rather than battery capacity alone, although it does not prove that the radio is defective.
4. Restrict excessive background work
Review apps that refresh, synchronize or use location in the background. Use the phone’s battery-saver or per-app restriction controls when their side effects are acceptable. Android notes that saver modes may pause updates, limit background activity and turn off features, so check whether delayed notifications matter to you.

5. Check heat
Look for warmth during charging, gaming, navigation or poor-signal use. Avoid leaving the phone in direct sun or a hot vehicle. On Apple devices, prolonged exposure above 35°C (95°F) can permanently damage capacity; the general principle for other phones is also to avoid sustained high temperatures, while recognizing that manufacturers publish different limits.
6. Check battery health and service guidance
On an iPhone, the Battery Health screen reports maximum capacity and can indicate when service is appropriate. Other manufacturers provide their own diagnostics or health estimates. If maximum capacity has fallen substantially, software changes cannot restore the missing chemical capacity; replacing the battery may be the relevant remedy, subject to the manufacturer’s service options.
What the bigger-battery result does—and does not—prove
If a phone with more mAh lasts less long in one test, that result shows only that its total energy use was higher under those conditions. It does not prove that larger batteries are ineffective, that 5G always drains more than 4G, or that the phone is defective. Change the workload, signal, brightness, temperature or battery age and the ordering can change.

Runtime claims need a defined task, matching settings and comparable device condition. For a purchasing decision, prioritize repeatable runtime measurements and efficiency information over capacity alone. For a used-phone decision, include battery health and age before comparing original specifications.
Practical takeaway
Think of capacity as the size of the tank and power consumption as the size of the leak. A larger tank helps only when the leak is not larger still. Screen brightness, demanding processing, cellular and 5G conditions, background activity, heat and battery aging can all make a high-capacity phone reach empty sooner. Compare phones under matched conditions, and troubleshoot the active load before blaming the mAh rating.
