If a new face is visible in the Google Pixel Watch app but not on the watch, first apply it again: open Pixel Watch app > Watch faces, select the design, and tap Use on watch. Then check the watch’s face carousel for a hidden face, allow time for transfer syncing if the watch was restored or transferred, update the phone and watch software, and confirm that the face is still compatible and available for that model. Google does not publish a fixed wait time for face syncing, so a specific number of minutes is not a reliable promise.
Apply the face from the Pixel Watch app
The app’s preview or selection screen is not the same thing as the face currently installed on the watch. Complete the installation action explicitly:

- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on your phone.
- Tap Watch faces.
- Browse to or select the face you want.
- Tap Use on watch.
Wait for the app to finish sending the selection before judging the result. If the design is still not the current face, use the watch itself to check whether it was added to the available-face list. Repeating the selection is useful when the first tap only opened a preview or when the app was still loading its connection to the watch.

If the app shows a face as selected but the watch continues to show the old design, close and reopen the Pixel Watch app, return to Watch faces, and use the button again. This does not replace the later checks: a face can be applied correctly and still be hidden, unavailable for the model, or waiting for transfer synchronization.

Check the watch’s face list, not just the phone app
On the watch, touch and hold the current face. Swipe left or right through the available faces, then tap the design you want. This is a separate check from choosing a face in the phone app: the app can show a design while the watch’s carousel has not yet applied it.
Checking directly on the watch also tells you whether the face is installed but simply not active. If it appears in the carousel, tap it to make it current. If it does not appear, continue with the hidden-face and transfer checks instead of assuming that the app’s preview means the installation is complete.
Look for a hidden face
Wear OS allows faces to be hidden. A hidden face can remain visible in the phone app while being absent from the watch’s face carousel. Open the watch’s face-management controls and look for an option to show or unhide the design. The exact menu wording can vary with the watch and software version, so follow the controls presented on your device.

Once the face is visible again, touch and hold the current face, swipe to it, and tap it to make it active. If it never appears in the watch list after you have applied it, continue with the transfer and compatibility checks below. Do not delete a face simply because it is missing from the carousel; first establish whether it is hidden or still being synchronized.
Allow for transfer syncing after a restore or watch transfer
A missing face is common immediately after moving to a new watch or restoring a backup. Google’s Pixel Watch transfer guidance says that watch faces “may take some time to sync after Watch Transfer is completed.” It does not give an exact duration. Do not treat a particular number of minutes or hours as a guaranteed sync window.
If you restored a new watch from a backup, leave the watch on its charger as Google directs while the restoration finishes. A backup can restore apps, data, settings, faces, and tiles, but backup completion and individual face synchronization are separate processes. Google’s statement that a backup may take up to a few days describes the backup operation, not a guaranteed watch-face delay.
During this stage, keep the phone and watch together, connected as they normally are for the Pixel Watch app, and check the face again after transfer activity has settled. Avoid judging the result while the watch is still restoring several apps or settings. If other restored apps or settings are also missing, treat the issue as a broader restore or pairing problem rather than a face-only problem.
A transfer delay is different from an unavailable face. If the watch eventually finishes restoring but the face is never listed, move on to the Play Store compatibility check rather than waiting indefinitely. Google gives no promise that every face from an older watch will follow a transfer.

Confirm that the face is still compatible and available
A face that worked on an older watch is not guaranteed to install on a new one. Google’s Wear OS Help explains that some older faces no longer transfer or remain available for installation on a new watch. The Play Store filters availability by device: “When browsing watch faces in the Google Play Store, only watch faces compatible with your device will be displayed and available to download.”
This device filtering is important after an upgrade, a restore, or a change in the watch model. A face may still be named in an old list, screenshot, or backup while its current package is no longer offered for the watch you are setting up.
Search for the face for this specific watch
- Open the Google Play Store and search for the face by name.
- Check the result while the store is associated with the specific Pixel Watch you are using.
- If the face is displayed as available, install or apply it through the supported flow and then return to Pixel Watch app > Watch faces.
- If the face is not offered for that device, assume it is incompatible, removed, or otherwise unavailable rather than trying to force an unofficial installation.
Faces that meet Google’s quality requirements are offered through the Play Store. An older face may therefore disappear from the store or fail to transfer even though it remains visible in an app list or was present on a previous watch. In that case, choose another face that the Play Store lists as available for your device.

Update the phone app, watch apps, and system software
Out-of-date software can prevent app data and face changes from reaching the watch. Google recommends current software on both devices. Updating before repeating the face installation also removes a common mismatch in which the phone app and watch are using different versions of their supporting services.
Update Google Pixel Watch on the phone
- Open the phone’s Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Pixel Watch.
- Install any available update.
After updating, reopen the Pixel Watch app, return to Watch faces, select the face, and tap Use on watch again. A general app or system update may commonly complete in under an hour, but that general timing is not a promise about watch-face synchronization.
Update apps on the watch
- Open Play Store on the watch.
- Tap Manage apps.
- Tap Update All.
The watch must be connected to the internet for app data to update. If updates do not begin, verify that the watch has an active internet connection and try the update flow again. Let pending app updates finish before testing the face, particularly after a restore when many apps may be queued.

If both the app update and the system update are available, complete them in their respective places: the phone’s Google Play Store for the Pixel Watch app, and the watch’s own settings or Play Store for watch software and apps. Updating only the phone does not update every watch component.
Use the special checks for a Google Photos face
Photo-based faces have an additional dependency: Google says to keep Google Photos current on both the phone and the watch. If the Photos face or its images are missing, update Google Photos on the phone through Google Play Store, update watch apps through Play Store > Manage apps > Update All, and then try the face again.
A Photos watch face can use up to 30 personal photos. That limit concerns how many photos the face can use; it is not a promised synchronization time. If the Photos app itself is missing on the watch, update the watch apps and retry the setup. Do not interpret an empty photo selection as proof that the entire watch-face system is broken; first check the Photos app versions and the watch’s pending updates.

| The face appears in the Pixel Watch app, but not on the watch | The selection may not have been applied, the face may be hidden, or transfer syncing may still be in progress. | Tap Use on watch, inspect the watch’s face carousel and hidden-face controls, then allow transfer syncing if the watch was restored or transferred. |
| The face is absent from the Play Store for the watch | It may be incompatible with that device or no longer available. | Use a face the Play Store displays as compatible and available for the specific watch. |
| The face disappeared after moving to a new watch | An older face may not transfer or may no longer be offered for installation. | Check the face in the Play Store for the new watch and wait for transfer synchronization when applicable. |
| A Photos face is missing or has no expected images | Google Photos or watch apps may be out of date. | Update Google Photos on both devices, update watch apps, and retry the face setup. |
| Several apps or sync functions are failing | The issue is broader than one face and may involve connectivity or outdated software. | Confirm internet access, update the phone app and watch software, then use Google’s troubleshooting guidance for the wider pairing or app problem. |
| The face was selected, but the old face remains active | The new face may already be installed but not selected on the watch. | Touch and hold the current face, swipe through the carousel, and tap the desired design. |
| The watch is still restoring apps and settings | Face synchronization may be part of an unfinished transfer. | Keep the watch on its charger as directed, allow restoration to proceed, then check the face again. |
What not to assume about the delay
There is no official numeric duration for watch-face synchronization after a transfer. A general app or system update may commonly finish in under an hour, but that figure is not a watch-face sync guarantee. Likewise, the “up to a few days” figure associated with a watch backup is not a prediction that one face will take days to appear. Keep those processes separate when deciding whether the face is genuinely stuck.
If the watch has only just been restored, first verify that the face was selected with Use on watch, inspect the face list, and allow the transfer process to complete. Move to compatibility and software checks when the face remains missing after those steps. There is no benefit in repeatedly resetting the watch simply because Google has not published a fixed synchronization interval.
When a factory reset is the wrong first move
Google’s face-specific guidance points first to application, visibility, transfer, update, and compatibility checks. It does not recommend a factory reset for a single missing face. Resetting can erase local watch data and create another restore cycle without fixing a face that is hidden, unavailable for the device, or still synchronizing.
Consider Google’s broader pairing or watch troubleshooting instructions only when the problem extends beyond this one face—for example, persistent pairing errors, multiple app failures, or a watch that is frozen. Use the instructions for that broader symptom rather than applying reset steps solely because one face is absent. If only one design is missing while other faces, apps, and syncing work, stay with the narrower checks in this article.
