A monitor that briefly blacks out during a game or other graphics task may be recovering from a display-driver problem, losing its signal, or reacting to an app or display mode. The two-second duration alone does not identify the cause. Start by noting whether the PC keeps working, then isolate the cable, port, app, driver, and display settings one at a time.
What a two-second blackout can—and cannot—tell you
Windows has a graphics recovery mechanism called Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR). Microsoft’s Windows Display Driver Model documentation describes a default two-second GPU task timeout: if a task takes longer than permitted, Windows can reset parts of the graphics stack and redraw the screen. Some older applications may remain black after recovery. Microsoft’s TDR documentation explains the mechanism.

A blackout lasting about two seconds is consistent with that timeout, but it does not prove that TDR caused your symptom. A momentary loss of the display signal, an app-specific problem, or a display-mode issue can look similar.

Record what happens during the blackout
Before changing settings, observe the symptom the next time it occurs. Note whether the application and audio continue, whether the monitor reports “no signal,” and whether one display or every connected display goes black. These clues help narrow the investigation, but none proves a particular component has failed.

- If the PC keeps responding while only the screen goes black, focus first on the display path, driver, app, and display mode.
- If the blackout occurs only in one game or graphics app, check that app and compare its behavior with other applications.
- If the PC also freezes, crashes, reboots, or develops other instability under load, investigate beyond the monitor connection.
Check whether Windows or one app is flickering
Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to help distinguish a display-driver problem from an incompatible app. Open Task Manager before reproducing the issue and watch it during the flicker:
- If Task Manager flickers at the same time, a display-driver issue is more likely.
- If Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does, an incompatible app is more likely.
This is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive test. Microsoft’s steps are in its Windows screen-flickering troubleshooting guide.

Isolate the cable, port, and display
A loose connection or signal-path problem can interrupt the picture. Microsoft advises checking that an external-monitor cable is secure and trying another video output port if one is available. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a particular change affects the blackout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reseat the display cable at both the monitor and PC.
- Try a different video output on the graphics card, if available.
- Test with a known-good cable or another display, if you can.
Microsoft’s guidance also recommends trying another monitor or cable to help rule out hardware: see its external-monitor connection troubleshooting. Intel likewise recommends checking monitor and system cable connections, testing a known-working monitor or an available motherboard output, and installing the latest display driver in its discrete-graphics black-screen guidance.

Check the app and graphics driver
If the blackout happens only in one game or graphics app, look for an app-specific issue and compare it with other apps. If the problem began after a graphics-driver change, consider updating, rolling back, or reinstalling the driver as appropriate to that change; Microsoft’s flickering guide covers driver troubleshooting.
Windows also provides a graphics-driver reset shortcut: press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This can reset the graphics driver, but it does not establish why the blackout happened or replace further troubleshooting if the symptom returns.

Test demanding display modes methodically
If the blackout appears when using a high refresh rate, high resolution, HDR, or switching display modes, test a lower refresh rate that your monitor and hardware support. Check that the cable and connection can carry the selected resolution and refresh-rate combination. Microsoft notes that available refresh rates depend on display and hardware capabilities; choosing a rate unsupported at the current resolution may change the resolution. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.

Cable bandwidth is one possibility to test at demanding modes, not a universal explanation. In a specific tested configuration, Intel’s Arc A770 Limited Edition guidance describes flicker and stutter above 60 Hz and recommends a certified cable with enough bandwidth for the chosen mode. That model-specific example does not show that every brief blackout is caused by a cable or refresh rate. See Intel’s Arc A770 display guidance. If trying another cable, match its type and bandwidth to your connectors and display mode; do not assume a cable is faulty unless the alternate-cable test changes the behavior.

Investigate power and broader instability only when symptoms warrant it
If a blackout comes with freezes, crashes, reboots, or other instability during intensive graphics work, check for known issues with the application and confirm that the power supply meets the graphics card’s requirements. NVIDIA notes that other system components can also cause symptoms under load, so a power-supply check is one branch of broader troubleshooting—not the first assumption for an isolated display dropout. See NVIDIA’s graphics-card support guidance.
Quick Recap
Use the results to choose the next test
- Task Manager flickers with the screen: prioritize display-driver troubleshooting.
- Task Manager stays steady and one app triggers the issue: focus on that app and its compatibility or known issues.
- A different cable, port, or display changes the behavior: continue isolating the signal path, changing only one item at a time.
- A lower supported display mode stops the blackout: check the cable and connection’s ability to carry the original mode.
- The PC also freezes, crashes, or reboots under load: investigate application issues, GPU power requirements, and possible broader hardware instability.
