A mixer grinder that leaks usually has a sealing, filling, or jar-damage problem; one that overheats or stops usually has too much load, an overly thick mixture, inadequate cooling, or a model-specific overload event. Switch it off, unplug it, and let hot parts cool before inspecting anything. Then identify where the liquid escapes and what the motor was processing. Check the appliance’s own manual for maximum fill levels, run-time limits, and reset instructions because jars, seals, protectors, and permitted loads differ by model.
Start with the symptom and location
Do not treat every wet spot as the same fault. Liquid at the lid has a different cause from liquid under the jar, while a motor that stops after a few seconds may be protecting itself rather than failing permanently.

| What you observe | Most likely area to check | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid appears around the lid or escapes from the top while blending | Gasket fit, gasket damage, or an overfilled jar | Unplug the grinder; reseat or replace the model-matched gasket and reduce the fill to the marked limit |
| Liquid appears around the bottom of the jar or coupler | Worn coupler-area bush, damaged jar, or a seal near the blade assembly | Stop using the appliance and arrange manufacturer or qualified service |
| The motor becomes hot or stops during a dense mixture | Excess ingredients, very thick paste, insufficient liquid, or an overload protector | Switch off, remove some mixture, add liquid only as the manual permits, and allow cooling |
| The grinder overheats even with a light load | External heat, excessive continuous operation, low voltage, or an internal fault | Move it away from heat, stop the run, and seek service if the condition returns |
Safety steps before checking a leak or hot motor
- Turn the speed control to off and unplug the power cord. Never reach into the jar, touch the blade assembly, or remove the coupler while the plug is connected.
- Keep the jar upright on a stable surface. A hot, pressurized mixture can spill when the lid is removed, so wait until it is safe to handle and open it away from your face.
- Use the jar handle rather than touching metal parts. Bosch warns that friction can heat a jar and says not to touch its metal portion immediately after grinding.
- Wipe external liquid away before testing anything. Do not run a grinder with liquid reaching the motor base, switch, or power connection.
- Do not bypass an overload protector, wedge down a reset button, or improvise a seal. Those actions can create an electric, mechanical, or burn hazard.
How to fix a leak from the lid or top
1. Check the gasket’s position
The flexible gasket must sit evenly in its groove. A section folded inward, twisted, pinched under the lid, or left partly outside the channel can create a narrow path for liquid. Remove the lid only after unplugging and cooling the jar, clean the groove and gasket, and refit it without stretching the rubber. Philips support instructions identify an improperly fitted or loose gasket as a cause of leakage on the models covered by those instructions.

A gasket that is cracked, cut, permanently flattened, hardened, or visibly misshapen cannot reliably seal. Replace it with a gasket specified for the exact grinder and jar model. Philips advises replacement when its covered gasket is cracked; that advice does not make a seal universal across brands or jar sizes. Match the part number, jar type, and lid design in the appliance documentation or through the manufacturer’s service channel.

3. Correct the fill level
Overfilling leaves too little headroom for ingredients to circulate. Movement can force liquid into the lid seam, and a foamy mixture can rise into the vent or locking area. Use the maximum mark printed on the jar, or the quantity stated in your manual, whichever applies to that jar. Philips specifically warns that exceeding the recommended quantity can cause leakage. Do not infer a safe capacity from another jar supplied with the same machine.
4. Check the mixture and lid seating
Large pieces, trapped ingredients on the rim, or a lid that is not fully seated can hold the seal open. Remove residue from the rim, distribute ingredients below the maximum line, and lock the lid exactly as the model’s instructions show. If leakage continues with a correctly fitted gasket and a conservative fill, stop using that jar until it has been assessed; a small crack can widen under vibration.
When the leak comes from the base or coupler
A puddle below the jar is not fixed by tightening the lid. Liquid at the coupler area can indicate a worn bush or a seal around the blade shaft, and a crack in the jar base can allow liquid to reach the drive connection. The Atomberg Zenova Flex 5J troubleshooting table lists a worn bush as a cause of leakage at its coupler area and directs the user to service.
Unplug the grinder, remove the jar, and inspect the outside only. Do not dismantle the blade assembly or coupler unless the manufacturer specifically provides a user procedure. If the jar is cracked, the base is loose, the coupler is wet, or liquid has entered the motor housing, keep the appliance out of service and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service centre. Running it “just once more” can spread liquid into bearings, wiring, or the switch.

Why a mixer grinder overheats or stops automatically
Excess ingredients or a very thick paste
Dense dough-like mixtures and thick pastes demand more torque than a watery blend. A full jar can also prevent ingredients from circulating, making the blades work against a compact mass. Bosch identifies excess ingredients and very thick paste as conditions that can activate the TrueMixx overload protector. Reduce the quantity and follow the model’s instruction for adding enough liquid; do not add liquid blindly to a recipe that requires a dry grind.
Continuous operation beyond the model’s duty cycle
A motor may be healthy but still become hot when it runs without a cooling interval. Atomberg’s Zenova Flex 5J troubleshooting table lists continuous operation beyond five minutes as one possible overheating cause. Five minutes is not a universal limit: use the exact run-time and rest guidance for your model, and include short pauses when processing repeated batches.
External heat or poor ventilation
Placing the motor base beside a cooktop, in direct sun, against a wall, or on a surface that blocks ventilation can raise its temperature before grinding begins. Atomberg lists an external heat source among possible overheating causes. Move the base to a dry, cool, level surface with clear airflow. Never cover ventilation openings while the motor is running.

Low or unstable voltage
Bosch lists low voltage as another condition that can trigger its TrueMixx overload protector. If the grinder stops during periods when other appliances are also struggling, disconnect it and have the supply checked by a qualified electrician rather than repeatedly restarting the motor. Do not use an unsuitable extension lead or a loose socket as a workaround.

A mechanical or electrical fault
Grinding noise, a burning smell, smoke, sparking, a seized blade, a hot plug, or overheating with a small, liquid mixture points beyond ordinary loading. Stop immediately and arrange service. Do not open the motor housing or continue testing after a protective stop accompanied by any of these signs.
The safe cooling and reset procedure
Reset controls are not interchangeable. Bosch’s manual for its cited TrueMixx models gives a model-specific sequence: switch off, remove excess ingredients, add sufficient water for a thick paste, wait two to three minutes, and then press the reset button. Follow that sequence only if your own manual identifies the same reset control and conditions.
- Switch the grinder off and unplug it.
- Wait until the jar and motor base are safe to handle. Do not touch hot metal immediately after grinding.
- Remove enough mixture to bring the load within the marked or documented limit. If the mixture is too thick, add the amount of liquid permitted by the recipe and appliance instructions.
- Allow the motor to cool for the period specified by the manual. Bosch’s cited procedure says two to three minutes; another model may require a different interval.
- Press the reset button only where the manual places it and only after the overload condition has been corrected.
- Run a brief test at the recommended setting. If the protector trips again, stop rather than repeatedly resetting it.

Replacement parts: what to buy and what not to assume
A replacement gasket is appropriate only after you have confirmed damage and compatibility. Match the appliance model, jar capacity, lid design, and part specification. A generic ring that looks similar can have the wrong diameter or thickness and may leak under pressure. Manufacturer documentation supports replacing a cracked gasket on specified Philips models, but it does not establish a universal seal.

If the jar itself is cracked, replace the complete compatible jar or use the manufacturer’s service route. The available guidance does not identify one replacement jar that fits all grinders. For a coupler-area leak or recurring overheating, service is more appropriate than buying seals or repeatedly changing jars.
How to prevent repeat leaks and overheating
- Measure each batch against the jar’s own maximum line rather than filling by eye.
- Keep the lid, gasket groove, and jar rim free of food particles before assembly.
- Use the speed, liquid quantity, and batch size specified for the ingredient.
- Break hard ingredients into the sizes recommended by the manual so the blades are not stalled by oversized pieces.
- Respect the stated continuous run time and cooling pauses, especially when processing several batches.
- Keep the motor base away from burners and other heat sources, and leave ventilation openings unobstructed.
- Inspect the gasket and jar after cleaning; replace parts that are cracked or permanently distorted.
- Never immerse the motor base or operate the grinder when liquid has reached its controls or coupler.
When to stop troubleshooting and call service
Arrange manufacturer or qualified service when leakage originates at the coupler or base, the jar has a crack, the blade shaft feels loose, or moisture has entered the motor housing. Also stop using the grinder when it overheats repeatedly after reducing the load and observing the cooling interval, or when it emits smoke, sparks, a persistent burning smell, or abnormal mechanical noise. A protective stop is useful only when the underlying load or operating condition is corrected; repeated trips are a reason for diagnosis, not repeated resets.
Model-specific limits matter
Philips support pages, Bosch manuals, and the Atomberg Zenova Flex 5J manual describe different jars, protectors, and operating limits. Bosch’s two-to-three-minute reset wait and TrueMixx overload conditions, Atomberg’s five-minute continuous-operation example, and Philips’ gasket and fill guidance should therefore be read as instructions for the named models, not as a single rule for every mixer grinder. Your appliance manual takes priority whenever its maximum quantity, reset method, cooling time, or service instructions differ.
