The leak location matters. A lid leak can often be corrected externally; leakage from the jar base or coupler area generally needs a compatible replacement part or authorised service. Smoke, a burning smell, stalling, repeated overheating, or continued abnormal noise are stop-use warnings, not faults to keep testing.
Identify the symptom before trying a fix
Turn the appliance off and unplug it before removing the jar, checking the lid, or touching any accessible assembly. Then identify exactly where the problem appears. Treating every leak as a lid-gasket problem can leave a worn jar bush or spindle leaking onto the motor coupling.

Safety checks that apply to every symptom
- Switch the mixer grinder off and unplug it before attaching or removing a jar, checking the lid, or inspecting accessible parts.
- Do not put fingers, tools or a spoon into a connected jar. Wait until the blades have stopped completely.
- Keep liquid away from the motor base, vents, switches and electrical connections.
- Use only the jar, lid, gasket, blade assembly and coupler parts approved for the exact model. Bosch’s instruction manual specifically says to use official Bosch parts and accessories.
- Do not open the motor housing, bypass an overload protector, alter wiring, or attempt an internal repair without the maker’s model-specific instructions and appropriate qualifications.
Bosch’s mixer-grinder instruction manual gives the clearest stop-use rule: Switch off the appliance if the motor stalls or smoke emanates from the appliance. If this continues, call the Bosch service center.
The same manual limits repairs to customer service. Apply that principle to any brand: a protective cutoff is not permission to keep running a machine that smells burnt, smokes or stalls.

How to fix a leak from the lid
1. Check the gasket and its seating
A lid leak often begins with a gasket that has shifted out of its groove. Once the appliance is unplugged and the jar is safe to handle, remove the lid and inspect the seal all the way around. It should be present, evenly positioned and snug in its channel. Philips’ troubleshooting guidance says to push a loose gasket into a snug fit.
Look for a split, flattened section, hardening, missing piece or deformation. A gasket that is cracked or permanently distorted should be replaced, not stretched or glued. Buy a seal confirmed for the exact jar and model; mixer-grinder gaskets are not universal even when they look similar.
2. Reduce the fill level
Check the maximum-fill mark inside the jar. Philips says that, for the listed models covered by its support guidance, the jar should not be filled above that mark. Overfilling leaves too little space for liquid and air movement, so pressure and splashing can force liquid past an otherwise serviceable seal. Remove enough mixture to stay below the mark before testing again.

A chipped rim, warped lid, cracked jar or debris trapped in the sealing surface can prevent a gasket from closing evenly. Clean the accessible surfaces, dry the outside, and refit the lid according to the model manual. Do not continue using a jar with a structural crack, especially when processing hot or fast-moving liquid.

When a replacement gasket is appropriate
A model-compatible lid gasket is the most direct replacement when the existing seal is missing, cracked or permanently deformed. Confirm the model number printed on the appliance or jar and verify that the part is specified for that jar. If a new, correct gasket still leaks, the lid or jar may be damaged or the leak may be coming from below the lid; arrange service rather than adding extra seals or adhesive.
How to handle leakage from the jar base or coupler area
Liquid under the jar, around the drive coupling, or at the point where the jar meets the motor base is a different fault from a lid leak. McCoy’s mixer manual identifies a worn sintered bush or spindle as a possible cause of jar-base leakage. An Atomberg Tavi manual excerpt likewise associates coupler-area leakage with a worn bush.
Unplug the unit, remove the jar without tipping liquid into the base, and wipe the exterior dry. Do not open the jar base, pull out the spindle, or dismantle the motor housing to reach the bush. A worn bearing or bush can require the correct press fit, seals and alignment; an improvised repair can create an electrical hazard or cause the blade to run off-centre.

Until it is inspected, do not operate the grinder with liquid reaching the motor coupling.

What to do when the mixer grinder overheats or switches off
Make the appliance safe first
Switch off and unplug it. Let the jar and contents cool enough to handle before removing excess mixture. If the housing is very hot, vents are blowing hot air, or the motor has stopped, do not immediately restart it to “see whether it works.” Move it away from an external heat source and keep ventilation openings clear.
Common operating causes
- Too much material: An overloaded jar makes the motor work harder.
- Very thick paste: A paste with little free liquid can stall the blades and raise motor temperature.
- Running too long: Continuous operation heats the motor even when the batch is correctly sized.
- Low voltage: Bosch lists low voltage as one possible trigger for its overload protector.
- External heat or blocked ventilation: Heat from a stove, direct sunlight, or obstructed vents can add to motor temperature.
Remove enough ingredients to reduce the load. For a thick paste, Bosch’s overload guidance says to add water as appropriate rather than forcing the motor through a dry, dense mass. Use the ingredient ratios and speed settings in the manual for your model.
Cooling and run-time limits are model-specific
Do not apply one brand’s timing to every mixer grinder. In the Bosch TrueMixx instructions reviewed, users are told to switch off when hot air can be felt at the vents and restart after 10 minutes. The same manual says not to run continuously beyond five minutes, followed by a two-minute wait. Another Bosch manual gives a different dry-grinding duration, confirming that limits vary by model and task.

Using an overload protector or reset
Some models cut power when the load is excessive, the paste is too thick or the supply voltage is low. Bosch’s model-specific procedure is to reduce the load, add water for a very thick paste when suitable, wait briefly, and then press the red reset control specified in that manual. The control, location and sequence are not universal.

Reset only after the cause has been corrected and the appliance has cooled as instructed. Never keep pressing a reset when the unit smokes, emits a burning smell, stalls, remains unusually hot or trips again immediately. Those symptoms require service, not repeated resets.

Check assembly with the power disconnected
McCoy lists a loose blade assembly, loose coupler or improperly locked jar as causes of abnormal noise. With the plug removed, verify that the jar is seated and locked according to the manual and that the lid and accessible components are correctly fitted. Do not run the machine with a loose blade assembly to locate the sound.
Check the batch and ingredient preparation
The Atomberg Tavi troubleshooting excerpt adds overloading and ingredients that are too hard or not cut to a suitable size. Reduce the quantity, cut hard produce to the size recommended by the maker, and use the appropriate jar. A dense or uneven batch can make a correctly assembled grinder vibrate or pulse.

Distinguish normal processing sounds from a fault
Short changes in pitch as ingredients move, or a brief pulse when a load starts, can be normal for some speed settings. A new metallic scrape, repeated click, harsh grinding, burning odour, jar wobble or vibration that increases with speed is not a sound to ignore. Stop, unplug and arrange service if reseating the jar and reducing the batch do not resolve it.

Decision guide: reseat, reduce, replace or service
- Locate the problem. Decide whether liquid is escaping at the lid, jar base or coupler, and whether noise or heat comes from the motor or jar.
- Disconnect power. Unplug before removing the jar or inspecting any accessible assembly.
- Correct external fit and load issues. Reseat the lid gasket, lock the jar, stay below the maximum mark, reduce the batch and prepare ingredients to the manual’s size.
- Allow model-directed cooling. Follow the exact manual’s cooling interval and continuous-run limit; do not substitute a generic timer.
- Replace only confirmed, compatible parts. A cracked lid gasket may need replacement; a worn bush, spindle, coupler or blade assembly should be diagnosed and supplied by the maker or authorised service.
- Escalate persistent or hazardous symptoms. Smoke, burning smell, stalling, base leakage, repeated overload trips, continued overheating or continuing abnormal noise means stop using the appliance and contact service.
Parts, service and warranty considerations
Record the model number, jar type, symptom, where the leak appears, what ingredients were being processed, and whether the appliance cut out. This information helps service staff distinguish a lid-seal issue from a jar-base or motor fault.
Use official or maker-approved parts where the manual requires them. Bosch specifically instructs users to use official Bosch parts and accessories. A replacement jar, blade assembly or coupler is appropriate only after the damaged or worn component has been confirmed and the part is matched to the model. Do not assume that a visually similar jar or gasket has the same dimensions, locking tabs or pressure rating.
Keep purchase records and photographs of a cracked jar, damaged lid or leaking coupler if a warranty assessment may apply. Do not modify the appliance before inspection; unauthorised opening or non-approved parts can complicate a safety or warranty evaluation.
Symptoms that require immediate service
- Smoke or a burning smell, even if the appliance still runs.
- The motor stalls, hums without turning, or repeatedly stops under a normal load.
- Liquid reaches the motor base, switch or electrical cord.
- Leakage continues after a correctly fitted, undamaged lid gasket and a below-limit fill.
- Leakage originates from the jar base or coupler area.
- The housing remains abnormally hot after the specified cooling period.
- The overload protector trips again immediately or cannot be reset as the manual describes.
- Persistent metallic noise, severe vibration, jar wobble or a visibly loose blade assembly.
There is no supported general statistic for how common these failures are. Frequency depends on model, load, operating time, ingredient preparation, voltage and maintenance, so a percentage from another appliance category would not describe your mixer grinder reliably.
Source-specific cautions
Philips’ lid-leak guidance applies to the named Philips models on its support page; confirm the manual and maximum-fill mark for another Philips jar or a different brand. Bosch’s five-minute run limit, 10-minute cooling instruction, red reset control and overload sequence belong to the Bosch models described in its instruction manual, document 8001203295, and should not be generalised. The Atomberg troubleshooting wording is from a manual excerpt hosted by a secondary manual site, so verify the relevant maker’s manual for your model. McCoy’s service recommendations likewise describe its mixer guidance, while the underlying safety approach—unplug, avoid internal repair and stop for smoke or stalling—is broadly prudent.
