A token’s total supply is an accounting figure, not a count of coins sitting on exchange order books. It generally includes every token that has been minted (less verifiable burns), including allocations that are locked, vesting, reserved, held by insiders, or controlled by a project treasury. Circulating supply is a separate estimate of the tokens a provider treats as publicly available. Even an unlocked token may remain in a stakeholder wallet or treasury and never be offered for sale.
To judge how much supply could actually reach the market, you need three things together: the provider’s definitions, the wallets and allocations it excludes, and the dated release schedule. An unlock changes when a holder can claim or transfer tokens; it does not prove that the holder will sell them or that the price must fall.

Total supply counts existence, not market availability
Total supply answers a narrow question: how many tokens have been issued under a stated accounting method? CoinMarketCap defines it as minted tokens minus verifiable burns. Its methodology includes both locked and unlocked tokens. A project can therefore report a large total even when only a much smaller portion is available for public trading.
“Issued” also does not mean “distributed to the public.” Tokens may be assigned to a team, investors, a foundation, an ecosystem reserve, a treasury, an escrow arrangement, or a contract that releases them only after conditions are met. Those tokens exist on the ledger, but their holders may be unable or unwilling to sell them today.

Max supply is different again. It is a theoretical or project-defined upper limit on how many tokens may ever exist. Some projects have a finite cap; others do not. A max-supply figure can therefore exceed current total supply by a substantial amount, and it should never be used as a substitute for either total or circulating supply.
Circulating supply is an estimate shaped by methodology
Circulating supply is intended to approximate the tokens available to the public, but providers must decide which wallets and allocations qualify. CoinGecko’s methodology, for example, excludes identified team, marketing-reserve, and investor holdings in its illustrative calculation. CoinMarketCap likewise considers whether tokens are locked, held by insiders, or otherwise not sellable on the public market. Because the rules and wallet classifications differ, two reputable providers can publish different circulating figures for the same token.

Do not read a circulating-supply number as a count of executable sell orders. It is a classification of holdings and an approximation of public circulation, not a measurement of exchange order-book depth or of every token a holder intends to sell.

Why an unlocked token may still not be circulating
“Unlocked” describes a restriction, not an owner’s behavior. Once a lock expires, a recipient may be able to claim or transfer the allocation. The recipient can also leave it untouched in the original wallet. Tokenomist explicitly distinguishes unlocked tokens that remain in stakeholder wallets from tokens counted as circulating.
Stakeholder wallets
A team member, investor, or contributor may have legal or practical control of an unlocked allocation while keeping it in a personal or organizational wallet. The token is transferable in principle, but no public buyer has received it and no sale order has been placed.
Treasury and foundation holdings
A foundation or treasury can hold unlocked tokens for grants, operations, incentives, or future distributions. Whether a provider includes those balances in circulating supply depends on its methodology and on the wallet’s documented role. A governance process or project decision may determine when, or whether, those tokens enter broader circulation.

Distribution contracts and reserves
Tokens can be unlocked at the allocation level while still waiting for a claim, distribution, or administrative action. The schedule makes them eligible for release; it does not establish that every eligible recipient has claimed them or transferred them.
What a vesting or unlock schedule actually tells you
A schedule is a calendar of changing restrictions. A cliff releases a portion at a specified date. Linear or periodic vesting releases tokens gradually over an interval. The event can increase the amount recipients are allowed to claim or transfer, but the schedule itself says nothing certain about the destination of those tokens afterward.
Recipients may hold the allocation, transfer it privately, use it within the project’s ecosystem, or distribute it according to foundation or governance decisions. The available documentation establishes potential supply availability, not a guaranteed sale volume. Treat an unlock as an input to your analysis rather than as a price forecast.

How to read supply figures without mixing unlike numbers
- Record the date and edition. Supply is a moving balance. Write down the timestamp, network, and provider before comparing figures.
- Read the provider’s definition. Check whether total supply is net of verifiable burns and which categories are excluded from circulating supply.
- Inspect wallet classifications. Look for team, investor, foundation, ecosystem, treasury, escrow, buyback, or other identified holdings and the reason each is excluded or included.
- Measure the gap. Compare circulating supply with total supply, and total supply with max supply when a cap exists. The gap is the portion that the provider does not classify as circulating; it is not automatically the amount for sale.
- Map the release calendar. Note the size, date, recipient category, and whether each event is a cliff or gradual vesting.
- Check project-specific controls. Review treasury-distribution rules, governance approvals, and contract terms that can affect when an unlocked allocation is actually distributed.
- Separate availability from orders. Use exchange listings, wallet movements, and market-depth data separately if you need to study selling activity. A circulating estimate cannot answer that question by itself.
A dated example: Arbitrum’s reported figures
The Arbitrum Foundation reported that its calculation produced 1.537 billion ARB in circulating supply as of March 7, 2024. The same page displayed a rounded table total of 2,653,939,384 tokens and warned that its estimate could change with treasury distributions or vesting. Using those dated figures, the reported circulating amount was about 57.9% of the table total.
That percentage is a snapshot of one project’s methodology and one date, not a current October 2026 balance and not a market-wide benchmark. It demonstrates why the date, the calculation method, and the project’s distribution decisions belong beside every supply number.
How to compare two tokens or two supply dashboards

Apply the same date and source standard to both tokens. Comparing one provider’s current circulating figure with another provider’s older estimate can create an apparent difference that is really a timing or methodology mismatch.
What an unlock can—and cannot—say about price
An unlock can increase the pool of tokens that recipients are permitted to claim or transfer. It cannot, by itself, establish how many tokens will be sold, when a sale will occur, or how the market will respond. The reviewed documentation does not provide a general empirical statistic quantifying how much token unlocks cause selling or price changes.
Potential market relevance depends on details such as the size and timing of the event, the recipient categories, the project’s distribution discretion, and the liquidity available to absorb transactions. Those are indicators of possible availability, not a guaranteed direction for price. Calling every unlock “bearish” goes beyond what a release schedule can prove.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using total supply as public float: total supply includes locked and otherwise restricted allocations.
- Equating unlocked with sold: an unlocked balance can remain untouched in a stakeholder or treasury wallet.
- Treating the schedule as a sales forecast: a vesting date changes eligibility, not holder intent.
- Mixing provider definitions: circulating figures are methodology-dependent estimates.
- Ignoring dates: treasury distributions, vesting, and burns can change balances after a published snapshot.
- Confusing max and total supply: a theoretical cap is not a count of tokens already issued.
- Calling circulating supply an order-book statistic: it does not measure executable sell orders or market depth.
A practical checklist for a specific token
Before deciding that a large supply creates imminent selling pressure, document the following:

- The provider’s rules for burns, locked balances, insider holdings, reserves, and treasuries.
- The wallets or allocation categories excluded from circulating supply.
- The next release dates, amounts, recipient groups, and vesting pattern.
- Any foundation, DAO, or governance authority that controls distribution after unlock.
- On-chain balances and contract terms that confirm whether recipients have claimed or moved tokens.
- Separate market data showing actual transfers, exchange deposits, orders, and liquidity if the question is selling rather than availability.
Bottom line
A large total supply does not mean all tokens are for sale because total supply records what exists, while circulating supply estimates what is publicly available under a particular methodology. Locked allocations, insider and investor holdings, reserves, treasuries, and unclaimed distributions can all be part of total supply without appearing in the public float. An unlock removes a restriction; it does not force a sale. Reliable analysis therefore combines definitions, wallet classifications, dated release schedules, and project-specific distribution rules instead of treating one headline supply number as a forecast.
